The Safety and Efficacy of Herbal Medicine for 107 Psoriasis Patients: A Retrospective Chart Review (한약으로 치료 받은 건선 환자 107명의 안전성 및 유효성에 대한 고찰)

  • Objectives: To observe safety and efficacy of herbal medicine for psoriasis patients. Methods: We did retrospective chart review for 107 psoriasis patients who had been treated by herbal medicine for 2 months, and we analyzed the liver function test (LFT) results and Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) scores of before and after the treatment. Results: The mean LFT and the number of patients with abnormal LFT decreased after the treatments. More than 95% of patients with normal LFT maintained normal results at after the treatment, and only 2.1% and 4.6% patients with normal LFT showed abnormal Glutamic Oxaloacetic Transaminase (GOT) and Glutamic Pyruvic Transaminase (GPT) results at after the treatment. Also, both mean PASI scores for all patients and patients with abnormal LFT before the treatment decreased significantly. Conclusions: This study suggest that herbal medicine may be safe and effective treatment for psoriasis.

A Case Report on Two Psoriasis Patients with Insomnia (불면증상을 동반한 건선 환자 치험 2례)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to present two treatment cases of psoriasis with insomnia. Methods: We administered Guibi-tang medication to the psoriasis patients with insomnia and tested the results by Psoriasis Area and Severity Index(PASI) and Insomnia Severity Index(ISI) as well. Results: After the treatment both the patients showed improvements in PASI and ISI as well. PASI of Patient 1 changed from 15.2 to 1.2 along with the change of ISI from 27 to 2. In case of Patient 2, PASI changed from 14.6 to 1.8 while ISI changed from 21 to 6. Conclusions: The results suggest that Guibi-tang can be an effective treatment for insomnia and psoriasis as well. Further studies will be needed to demonstrate conclusively the effect of Guibi-tang on psoriasis cure.

A Case of Psoriasis Treated with Aromatherapy (향기요법을 사용한 건선환자의 치험 1례 보고)

  • Psoriasis is a common skin disease and the difficulty of its medical management is well known, A report was done on psoriaSis which were treated with aroma therapy to be consulted in Dept. surgery, opthalmology & otolarygology, college of Oriental Medicine, Dongeui University, from Dec. 24, 2003 to Mar. 5, 2004. We gave score and checked involvement in plaque, erythematous popules and invasiveness according to psoriasis area and severity index (PASI). After 75 days of treatment the patient showed that symptoms were disappeared and score of PASI changed from 54.7 to 0. These results that Aroma therapy has good effects on psoriasis in assistant therapy.

  • Background : The purpose of this study is to analyze research trends on the korean medical treatment and develop the way of psoriasis cure. Object & Method : This study is based on analysis of recent paper about korean medical treatment of psoriasis using WKUCL(Wonkwang University Central Library) and NDSL(National Discovery for Science Leader). I searched papers using the keyword "Psoriasis". Inclusion criteria was last 13 years. Result : A total 19 studies were found. They turned out to be effective treatment methods of acupuncture, moxibustion, internal medicines, external applications, and evaluation tool of PASI(psoriasis area and severity index). Conclusion : According to the results, korean medical treatments have good effects on psoriasis. If we accumulate the more clinical reports, it will be helpful to map out a systematic treatment of korean medicine on psoriasis.

Traditional Korean Medicine Treatment for Psoriasis Vulgaris: Retrospective Chart Review (보통 건선의 한방치료 경과에 대한 후향적 고찰)

  • Objective : To observe effects of TKM (Traditional Korean Medicine) treatment for psoriasis vulgaris. Methods : We did retrospective chart review for 32 psoriasis vulgaris patients who had been treated by TKM. TKM treatment included acupuncture, herb med, external herbal solution and moxibustion. Result : PASI (Psoriasis Area and Severity Index) 75 responding rate at treatment week 16 was 71.9%. Mild symptom patients' improvement rate and moderate to severe symptom patients' improvement rate was similar. Mean PASI score was increased until treatment week 4 to 8, and after that period, mean PASI score was decreased. Conclusion : This study suggest that TKM may be an effective treatment for psoriasis vulgaris.

Retrospective Study about the Effectiveness of Korean Medical Treatment on 101 Psoriasis Patients for 6 months (건선 환자 101명의 6개월간의 한의학적 치료효과에 대한 후향적 연구)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to report the effectiveness of Korean Medicine Treatment on 101 psoriasis patients for 6 months. Methods : Psoriasis Area and Severity Index(PASI) is used for measuring the degree of psoriasis with photos of total 101 psoriasis patients who have visited Korean medical clinic from October 11, 2013 to August 31, 2017. And we analyzed the PASI score according to gender, age, period of treatment, being used steroid or not. Results : 1. The ratio of male to female was 44.55 : 55.45. The mean age of patients was 34.65 years old(All patients were constituted with 9.9% of 10~19 year-old group, 31.7% of 20~29 year-old group, 26.7% of 30~39 year-old group, 12.9% of 40~49 year-old group, 15.8% of 50~59 year-old group and 3.0% of 60~69 year-old group). 2. PASI score was significantly higher in men than in women before treatment, but there was no significant difference of PASI score improvement after 2, 4 and 6 months treatment in both men and women. 3. PASI score improvement according to age after 2, 4 and 6 months treatment was no significant difference. 5. In initial visit, the steroid group patients were 61 and non-steroid group patients were 40. PASI score in initial visit between steroid group and non-steroid group was no significant difference. And PASI score after 2, 4 and 6 months treatment was no significant difference. Conclusions : PASI score was significantly decreased after 2, 4 and 6 months treatment compared with before treatment. PASI score improvement was significantly increased in proportion to the period of treatment.

Three Cases Report of Children Psoriasis treated by Bangpungtongsungsan (방풍통성산(防風通聖散)으로 치료한 소아 건선(乾癬) 3례)

  • Objectives The purpose of these 3 cases study is to report the effects of psoriasis children treated by oriental medicine. Methods The subjects are 3 children diagnosed as having psoriasis. These patients were treated by oriental herbal medicine(Bangpungtongsungsan). We observed the improvement of skin condition by Psoriasis Area and Severity Index(PASI) score. Results After treatment, the symptoms of psoriasis were relieved. PASI score of three children in psoriasis was respectively changed from 7 to 0, 2.4 to 0, 3.6 to 0. Conclusions This study shows that Bangpungtongsungsan can be an effective treatment for psoriasis. Further study in needed with more cases of treatment.

  • Psoriasis, which is characterized by the covering of silver-white scaliness and various Sizes of redness with clear boundary, is an intractable skin disease that repeats aggravation and remission. The objective of the present clinical report is to demonstrate that oriental medical treatment after differentiation of syndromes is effective in treating psoriasis, an intractable skin disease. For this purpose, we identified the pattern of three psoriasis patients based on blood heat and viscous blood, and applied acupuncture and herbal medicine to them. The effect of treatment was evaluated using PASI (psoriasis area and severity index). In all of the three cases, the results of treatment were satisfactory. Thus, oriental medical treatment after differentiation of syndromes, which is highly effective without side effect, is considered to make a great contribution to the treatment of psoriasis in the future.

A Case Report of Treating Childhood Psoriasis by Danguieumja-gagambang and External Treatments (당귀음자가감방(當歸飮子加減方)과 외치법(外治法)을 병용한 소아(小兒) 건선(乾癬) 치험 1례)

  • Objectives The purpose of this case study is to report the effect of concurrent administration of Danguieumja-gagambang and external treatments on childhood psoriasis. Methods The subject is a child with psoriasis. This patient was treated with oriental herbal medicine (Danguieumjagagambang) and external treatments. The improvement of the skin condition is observed by Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) score. Results After the treatment, the symptoms of psoriasis were relieved. PASI score of this child went down from 4.7 to 0. Conclusions This study showed that concurrent administration of Danguieumja-gagambang and external treatments can be an effective choice for psoriasis.

Two different Cases of Psoriasis Patients Treated with 2 different Kobangs (고방(古方)으로 치료한 건선 환자 치험 2례)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of 2 Kobangs. Daecheongryong-tang and Samhwangsasim-tang on to two psoriasis patients each. The improvement of the skin condition was observed by Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) score. The patient treated with Daecheongryong-tang showed significant improvement after the patient's state of sweating improved and the PASI score of the patient reduced from 17.6 to 1.8 after five months of treatment. The patient treated with Samhwangsasim-tang showed gradual improvement after the patient's defecation was improved and the PASI score of the patient reduced from 27.3 to 3.6 after three months of treatment. According to the results, we obtained clinically positive effects from 2 Kobangs applied on 2 psoriasis cases respectively. Although there were few reports on psoriasis treated with Kobang, we can suggest effective treatment on psoriasis.
