Pseudostellaria Pax (Caryophyllaceae) is a small genus distributed in temperate region. It consists of 25 species presenting high diversity in Asia. Pseudostellaria longipedicellata S. Lee, K. Heo & S. C. Kim was first announced as new species in 2012. Morphological characters of P. longipedicellata are closely related to those of Psedusotellaria palibiniana and Psedusotellaria okmotoi. These are distinguished from P. longipedicellata by shorter pedicel and puberulent pedicels, respectively and by being distributed allopatically between P. longipedicellata and rest of species. The complete chloroplast genome of P. longipedicellata was successfully rescued from raw reads generated by HiSeq2000. Its total length is 149,626 bp consisting of four regions: large single copy (LSC) region (81,292 bp), small single copy (SSC) region (16,984bp), and inverted repeats (IRs; 25,765 bp per each). It contained 126 genes (81 coding DNA sequence (CDS), eight rRNAs, and 37 tRNAs); 18 genes (seven CDS, four rRNAs, and seven tRNAs) are duplicated in inverted repeat regions. The overall GC content of P. longipedicellata is 36.5% and in the LSC, SSC, and IR regions were 34.3%, 29.3%, and 42.4%, respectively. Based on phylogenetic analysis of chloroplast genomes of P. longipedicellata and relatives species presents clear phylogenetic positions of Pseudostellaria genus. This chloroplast genome will be an important sequence resources for further researches of Pseudostellaria genus.
A new species, Pseudostellaria baekdusanensis M. Kim (Caryophyllaceae), has been named and described from Mt. Baekdu of the Korean peninsula. Pseudostellaria baekdusanensis shares several characteristics (same size leaves, axillary or terminal flowers, emaginate petals, etc.) with its related species P. japonica (Korshinsky) Pax. It is, however, distinct from P. japonica which have large plant (25-35 cm), leaf blade margins and midveins with long hairs, shallow emaginate petal apex, (2) 3 styles, and cleistogamic flowers by having small plants (9-13 cm), leaf blade basal margins with long hairs, deep emaginate petal apex, 2 styles, and non-cleistogamic flowers.
The genus Peronospora, an obligate biotrophic group belonging to Oomycota, causes serious damage to a variety of wild and ornamental plants, as well as cultivated crops, such as beet, rose, spinach, and tobacco. To investigate the diversity of Peronospora species parasitic to Stellaria and Pseudostellaria (Caryophyllaceae) plants in Korea, we performed a morphological analysis on dried herbarium specimens and molecular phylogenetic inferences based on internal transcribed spacer rDNA and cox2 mitochondrial DNA sequences. As a result, it was confirmed that there are four species of Peronospora parasitic to specific species of Stellaria and Pseudostellaria, all of which were hitherto unrecorded in Korea: P. alsinearum (ex Stellaria media), P. stellariae-aquaticae (ex Stellaria aquatica), P. stellariae-uliginosae (ex Stellaria alsine), and P. pseudostellariae (ex Pseudostellaria palibiniana). In addition, Peronospora specimens parasitic to Pseudostellaria davidii differed morphologically from P. pseudostellariae owing to the large and ellipsoidal conidia; this morphological discrepancy was also validated by the high genetic divergence between the two species. Peronospora casparyi sp. nov. is described and illustrated here.
From the BuOH extract of Pseudostellaria palibiniana Ohwi (Caryophyllaceae), isovitexin, m.p. $220{\sim}222^{\circ}$, $[{\alpha}]^{20}_D+16^{\circ}$ (c=0.34, EtOH) was isolated and its structure elucidated on the basis of its spectral data.
Pharmacological studies have been carried out with the methanol extract of the whole plant of Pseudostellaria palibiniana Ohwi (Caryophyllaceae). The results showed that it had stimulation effect on heart, hypotensive actions depending on extract contents, stimulation effect on respiration, contraction on excised intestines, enhancement of tension on excised uterus, antineoplastic activity on Ehrlich carcinoma, liver protective activity against $CCl_4$ intoxication, writhing and diuretic activities.

Weeds play an important role in the survival of viruses and are potential inoculum sources of viral diseases for crop plants. In this study, specimens of Pseudostellaria heterophylla exhibiting symptoms of the cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) were collected in Bonghwa, Korea. The characteristics of the disease were described and leaf RNA was extracted and sequenced to identify the virus. Three CMV contigs were obtained and PCR was performed using specific primer pairs. RNA from positive samples exhibiting CMV leaf symptoms was amplified to determine the coat protein. A sequence comparison of the coat protein gene from the CMV BH isolate shared the highest nucleotide identity (99.2%) with the CMV ZM isolate. Phylogenetic analysis showed that CMV-BH belonged to subgroup IA and that the most closely-related isolate was CMV-ZM. All test plants used for the biological assay were successfully infected with CMV and exhibited CMV disease symptoms such as blistering, mosaic, and vein yellowing. To our knowledge, this is the first report of CMV infection in P. heterophylla from Korea.
The root of Pseudostellaria heterophylla Pax et Hoffm. (Caryophyllaceae) is a herbal medicine called Taejasam(太子蔘) and used as a good tonic in China that strengthens the functions of the lung and the stomach like Ginseng in Korea. It has been known to have the antitussive activity for tuberculosis, appetizing effect and antifatigue activity, and so on. Especially it has been known to generate body fluids for the severe thirst and the shortage of water in body after a febrile disease for a long time. Recently some components of cyclic peptides, pseudostellarins A,B,C,D,E,F,G, that inhibit the activity of tyrosinase, were separated from this root. In this report several biological activities including acute toxicity, analgesic activity, antifatigue activity, bile juice increasing activity, hepatoprotective activity and antiinflammatory activity were investigated. These results showed as such; $LD_{50}$ of methanol extracts was above 10,000 mg/kg. The analgesic effect was revealed in the writhing test using rats. The BuOH fractions showed a prominent antifatigue effect against immobilized stress, significant hepatoprotective activities against $CCl_4$ intoxication and inhibitory effect on carrageenin-induced edema in rat's paw.
From phytochemical screening of the seven species of Caryophyllaceae, that is, one species of Melandrium, and Dianthus and Pseudostellaria, two species of Stellaria and Cerastium the following compounds were identified. 1) aldehyde, sugars, other reducing compounds and glycosides from the above mentioned seven species of Caryophyllaceae were identified by thin layer chromatography method and comparison of Rf values with the standard substances. 2) Saponins, steroids and terpenoids showed positive reaction with the Froth testing in all of seven plants. Five species of plant showed positive reaction with Liebermann-Buchard test. 3) Flavonoid and polyphenolic compounds were identified by the spots in TLC-test and chlorogenic acid showed the same Rf values with the standard substances. 4) The spots of alkaloid were shown at Rf=0.68 (Stellaria aquatica) and at Rf=0.71 (Pseudostellaria palibiniana) and at Rf=0.70, and 0.44 (Dianthus sinensis).
Free anino acid contents in alcohol extract of eight plants of Caryophyllaceae and their microbial activities were investigated. 1) Amino acid contents in both of the Pseudostellaria palibiniana and Stellaria media was the highest among them and the contents was less in the order of Cerastium caspitosum and Stellaria aquatica. 2) Of all free amino acids contained in eight plants, valine was the richest, and then glutamic acid, leucine in that order. On the other hand, no methionine was observed and cystine, lysine and histidine were found in small amounts. 3) Of eight plants exhibited good antibacterial action against Sarcina lutea, B. subtilis and Sal. typhi. 4) S.aquatica and Pseudostellaria palibiniana showed antibiotic actions against all bacteria except for fungus, Candida albicans. 5) C. caspitosum and C. brachypetalum showed inhibition zone against B. subtilis and Sal. typhi only. 6) Antibacterial activity against gram(+) bacteria was more potent than gram(-).
The genus Pseudostellaria (Caryophyllaceae) in Korea was investigated in order to clarify the taxonomic positions and scientific names among the species in this genus based on morphological characteristics. P. ${\times}$ bohyeonsanensis and P. ${\times}$ seoraksanensis share several characteristics (trichome on the sepal margin and midvein, five petals, and stem reclining to the ground after flowering) with P. davidii. P. ${\times}$ bohyeonsanensis, resulting from natural hybridization of P. davidii and P. okamotoi var. longipedicellata, has sterile fruit and a long pedicel (2.2-6.0 cm). P. ${\times}$ seoraksanensis, a natural hybrid of P. davidii and P. palibiniana var. palibiniana, has sterile fruit and a short pedicel (1.1-1.8 cm). P. okamotoi var. longipedicellata shares several characteristics (long pedicels of chasmogamic flowers that elongate to the ground when bearing fruit and cleistogamic flowers with a long pedicel) with the related taxa P. okamotoi var. okamotoi. P. okamotoi var. longipedicellata has slender root tubers, glabrous pedicels, and 5-9 petals. P. palibiniana var. gageodoensis is described from Gageodo Island. It is similar to P. palibiniana var. palibiniana having chasmogamic flowers at the stem terminal, 5-7 petals, and a short pedicel, but P. palibiniana var. gageodoensis is distinguished by 1-2 rows of trichomes on the pedicel, a large sepal size, a large petal size, and a branched stem at its base. P. ${\times}$ biseulsanensis, from a natural hybrid of P. heterophylla and P. okamotoi var. longipedicellata, has a solitary aerial stem, a chasmogamic flower at the stem terminal, a shallow marginate or bitten petal apex, one row of trichomes on the pedicel, and sterile fruit. P. ${\times}$ segeolsanensis, from a natural hybrid of P. palibiniana var. palibiniana and P. okamotoi var. okamotoi, is described from Segeolsan Mt. It has numerous aerial stems, a chasmogamic flower at the stem terminal, 1-2 rows of trichomes on the pedicel, and fertile fruit. Consequently, the genus Pseudostellaria in Korea has been classified into eight species, four hybrids, two varieties, and five forms.
