  • Fenofibrate has been used for many years to lower cholesterol levels and its pharmacokinetic profile is well understood. However, due to its low solubility in water, it has low bioavailability after oral administration. In order to improve the dissolution rate, fenofibrate was formulated into a self-microemulsifying drug delivery systems (SMEDDS). We used pseudo-ternary phase diagrams to evaluate the area of microemulsification, and an in vitro dissolution test was used to investigate the dissolution rate of fenofibrate. The optimized formulation for in vitro dissolution assessment consisted of Lauroglycol FCC (60%), Solutol HS 15 (27%), and Transcutol-P (13%). The mean droplet size of the oil phase in the microemulsion formed from the SMEDDS was about 130 nm. The dissolution rate of fenofibrate from SMEDDS was significantly higher than that of the reference tablet. Our studies suggested that the fenofibrate containing SMEDDS composition can effectively increase the solubility and oral bioavailability of poorly water-soluble drugs.

  • In the general accretion disk model theory, the accretion disk surrounding an astronomical object comprises fluid rings obeying Keplerian motion. However, we should consider relativistic and rotational effects as we close in toward the center of accretion disk surrounding spinning compact massive objects such as a black hole or a neutron star. In this study, we explore the geometry of the inner portion of the accretion disk in the context of Mukhopadhyay's pseudo-Newtonian potential approximation for the full general relativity theory. We found that the shape of the accretion disk "puffs up" or becomes thicker and the luminosity of the disk could exceed the Eddington luminosity near the surface of the compact spinning black hole.

  • A hybrid electrochemical capacitor having both characteristics of electric double layer capacitance and pseudo-capacitance was studied throughout cell tests. Asymmetric electrodes with $Ni(OH)_2/activated$ carbon based positive electrode and activated carbon based negative electrode were used in preparing test cells of $5\times5cm^2$. Cyclic voltammetry measurements and impedance measurements were conducted to understand electrochemical behavior of each electrode. To find an optimal mass ratio of negative to positive electrode, charge-discharge cycle tests were also performed.

  • Treatment of water hyacinth with sulphuric acid produces carbonaceous materials that have been used to remove Cu(II) and Cd (II) ions from aqueous solutions. Untreated water hyacinth was also used for the subject of comparison. The textural properties of the carbonaceous materials were determined from nitrogen adsorption at 77 K. The optimum pH for the sorption of Cu (II) and Cd (II) ions on the investigated sorbents was determined. Dynamic adsorption measurements have been taken at 298 K whereas equilibrium measurements were carried out at 298, 313 and 323 K. The adsorption of nitrogen at 77 K on the untreated sample was too low and the surface areas of the treated samples 2, 3 and 4 were found between $70-208\;m^2/g$. The total pore volumes of these samples which were determined for the carbonaceous materials investigated were found to be 0.076-0.140 ml/g. The kinetic adsorption data of Cu (II) and Cd(II) were applicable to both pseudo - first and pseudo-second order but fit more the latter order. The equilibrium adsorption data were found to fit Freundlich and Langmiur equations. The values of DG, DH and DS are all negative indicating the feasibility and the spontaneous nature of the sorption of Cu (II) and Cd (II) ions by the sorbents investigated.

  • Flexible organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays with organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) backplanes have been studied. A gate driver is required to drive the OLED display. The gate driver is integrated into the panel to reduce the manufacturing cost of the display panel and to simplify the module structure using fabrication methods based on low-temperature, low-cost, and large-area printing processes. In this paper, pseudo complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) logic gates are implemented using OTFTs for the gate driver integrated in the flexible OLED display. The pseudo CMOS inverter and NAND gates are designed and fabricated on a flexible plastic substrate using inkjet-printed OTFTs and the same process as the display. Moreover, the operation of the logic gates is confirmed by measurement. The measurement results show that the pseudo CMOS inverter can operate at input signal frequencies up to 1 kHz, indicating the possibility of the gate driver being integrated in the flexible OLED display.

  • In this work, we report several experimental data capable of evaluating the phase transition characteristics of (InTe)x(GeTe)y (x = 0.1, 0.3, y =1) pseudo-binary thin films. (InTe)x(GeTe)y phase change thin films have been prepared by thermal evaporator. The crystallization characteristics of amorphous (InTe)x(GeTe)y thin films were investigated by using nano-pulse scanner with 658 nm laser diode (power : 1~17 mW, pulse duration : 10~460 ns) and XRD measurement. It was found that the crystalline speed of In-Ge-Te thin films are faster than $Ge_2Sb_2Te_5$[1] and also the crystalline temperature is higher. Changes in the optical transmittance of as-deposited and annealed films were measured using a UV-VIS-IR spectrophotometer and four-point probe was used to measure the sheeresistance of InGeTe films annealed at different temperature.

  • To prepare the complex gel of flux and pseudo-boehmite used in precursor of the flaky ${\alpha}-A1_2O_3$ crystal, aqueous solution of the mixture of sodium carbonate and sodium phosphate was added with stirring in aqueous solution of the mixture of sodium sulfate, potassium sulfate and titanium sulfate. The complex gel was dried at $110^{\circ}C$ and was crystallized above $1,050^{\circ}C$, and then the effect of the amount of titanium sulfate on size, morphology, thickness and crystal size distribution of the flaky ${\alpha}-A1_2O_3$ crystal was investigated. Addition of titanium sulfate was prevented the aggregation and generation of twin crystal, and had an effect on the crystal size and the thickness during crystal growth. When the amount of titanium sulfate was more than 6 g, particle size was decreased but was free from crystal twining and aggregation. On the other hand, when the amount of titanium sulfate was lower than 6 g, crystal size was increased but crystal twinning and aggregation were noticed.

  • We present a direct simulation technique for two-dimensional mold-filling simulations of fluids filled with a large number of circular disk-like rigid particles. It is a direct simulation in that the hydrodynamic interaction between particles and fluid is fully considered. We employ a pseudo-concentration method for the evolution of the flow front and the DLM (distributed Lagrangian multipliers)-like fictitious domain method for the implicit treatment of the hydrodynamic interaction. Both methods allow the use of a fixed regular discretization during the entire computation. The discontinuous Galerkin method has been used to solve the concentration evolution equation and the rigid-ring description has been introduced for freely suspended particles. A buffer zone, the gate region of a finite area subject to the uniform velocity profile, has been introduced to put discrete particles into the computational domain avoiding any artificial discontinuity. From example problems of 450 particles, we investigated the particle motion and effects of particles on the flow for both Newtonian and shear-thinning fluid media. We report the prolonged particle movement toward the wall in case of a shear-thinning fluid, which has been interpreted with the shear rate distribution.

  • Purpose: Precocious puberty is defined as breast development before the age of 8 years in girls. The present study aimed to reveal the diagnosis of Korean girls referred for precocious puberty and to compare the constitutional and endocrinological features among diagnosis groups. Methods: The present study used a retrospective chart review of 988 Korean girls who had visited a pediatric endocrinology clinic from 2006 to 2010 for the evaluation of precocious puberty. Study groups comprised fast puberty, true precocious puberty (PP), pseudo PP, premature thelarche, and control. We determined the height standard deviation score (HSDS), weight standard deviation score (WSDS), and body mass index standard deviation score (BMISDS) of each group using the published 2007 Korean growth charts. Hormone tests were performed at our outpatient clinic. Results: The PP groups comprised fast puberty (67%), premature thelarche (17%), true PP (15%), and pseudo PP (1%). Advanced bone age and levels of estradiol, basal luteinizing hormone (LH), and peak LH after gonadotropin-releasing hormone stimulation testing were significantly high in the fast puberty and true PP groups compared with the control group. HSDS, WSDS, and BMISDS were significantly higher in the true PP group than in the control group (P<0.05). Conclusion: The frequent causes of PP were found to be fast puberty, true PP, and premature thelarche. Furthermore, BMISDS were significantly elevated in the true PP group. Therefore, we emphasize the need for regular follow-up of girls who are heavier or taller than others in the same age group.
