  • Four psammocinian species(Demospongiae: Dictyoceratida: Irciniidae) are described from Gageodo and Jejudo Islands, Korea. Among them, three are new species, Psammocinia rana, P. massa and P. vermins, which are very different from other recorded species. Secondary fibres of Psammocinia rana are mostly wide platelike shape with large perforation. Primary and secondary fibres of Psammocinia massa are lumped together in a thick mass through numerous areas. Psammocinia vemis is similar to P. mosulpia in skeletal structure, but differs in size of cored sands in primary fibres. The fourth species, we reclassify from Ircinia chupoensis to Psammocinia chupoensis based on more detailed observation of the skeletal structure. Ircinia only has sand cored primary fibres, while the observed species, has sand cored primary and secondary fibres.

  • Eleven new species of two genera, Psammocinia and Ircinia (Demospongiae: Dictyoceratida: Irciniidae) are described from Gageo Island, Ulleung Island and Jeju Island, South Korea. The separation of these two genera was made on basis of morphological evidence, especially skeletal structure with foreign debris. Six new species of Psammocinia and five new species of Ircinia were added to known fauna. All skeletal fibres are very irregular.

  • Three new Psammocinia species of the family Irciniidae, Psammocinia jejuensis, P. mosulpia and P. mammiformis, are described from Cheju Island and Namhae Island, Korea. The characteristic of these Psammocinian sponges is that they have the large quantity of sand grain in fibres, matrix and surface sand crust.

  • Two new species of the genus Psammocinia (Dictyoceratida, Irciniidae), P. lobatus and P. rubra, are described from Gageodo Island (Sohuksando Island)and Jejudo Island, Korea. Psammocinia lobatus is most closely related to P. wandoensis Sim and Lee in growth form. However, it can be distinguished by its sharp conules and primary and secondary fibres, lightly cored with detritus. Psammocinia rubra is readily distinguished from the other described Psammocinia species by the blunt conules, reddish brown color of specimen, brown color of fibres and filaments, secondary web between adjacent primary fibres and filament coated with brown granules.

  • Two new species of the genus Psammocinia (Dictyoceratida, Irciniidae), P. conulosa n. sp. and P. ulleungensis n. sp., are described from Namhaedo Island and Ulleungdo Island, Korea. Psammocinia conulosa n. sp. seems to be close to both P. amodes Cook and Bergquist, 1998 and P. hawere Cook and Bergquist, 1996 on the basis of the skeletal structure. However, these three species are clearly separated by the following differences: Shape of P. amodes is spatulate and thin, with a broad blade narrowing to a semi-cylindrical stalk; P. hawere forms cups with a shallow excavated bowl, and attached to the substratum by a narrow base. The whole surface of the new species is very finely conulose. Psammocinia ulleungensis n. sp. is similar to P. gageoensis Sim and Lee, 2001 in shape, but this species is easily distinguished from P. gageoensis by the simple skeletal structure.

  • Two new species of the family Irciniidae, Psammocinia wandoensis n.sp. and P.samyangensis n. sp., are described. They were collected from the South Sea, Korea. P. wandoensis n. sp. closely resembles P. rugosa(Lendenfed, 1889)from Australia in morphology, but new species differs from P. rugosa by the filaments. Though P. samyangensis n. sp. is very similar to P. jejuensis, but our species differs from P. Jejuensis by the fibre shape.

  • Two new species of the genus Psammocinia (Dictyoceratida, Irciniidae), P. bergquisti n. sp. and P. gageoensis n. sp., are described from Gageodo Island (Sohuksando Island), Korea. P. bergquisti n. sp. is characterized by the thumb like appearance and secondary fibre which makes a broad plate or secondary web while other known species in Psammocinia has many narrow and simple secondary fibres. P. gageoensis n. sp. is very similar to P. mosulpia Sim 1998 in shape, but primary fibre of the new species has more complex fascicles and it is difficult to see the detritus in the fibre. The primary fibre of this new species is cored with the smaller sand than that of P. mosulpia.

  • An investigation of the MeOH soluble fractions of marine sponge Psammocinia sp. (Order: Dictyoceratida) led to the isolation of a new epidioxy sterol (1) and four known sterols (2-5). Their planar structures were defined by analyses of the spectroscopic data. The 27-nor-24-methylcholestan type side chain with an epidioxy nucleus (1) was unprecedented. Compounds 1-5 were isolated from a sponge Psammocinia sp. for the first time.
