  • Semi-active control systems have attracted a great deal of attention in recent years because these systems can operate on battery power alone, proving advantageous during seismic events when the main power source of the structure may likely fail. The behavior of semi-active devices is often highly non-linear and requires suitable and efficient control algorithm. This paper presents the comparative study and performance of variable semi-active friction dampers by using recently proposed predictive control law with direct output feedback. In this control law, the variable slip force of semi-active variable friction damper is kept slightly lower than the critical friction force, which allows the damper to remain in the slip state during an earthquake, resulting in improved energy dissipation capability. This control algorithm is able to produce a continuous and smooth slip forces for a variable friction damper. The numerical examples include a structure controlled with multiple variable semi-active friction dampers and with multiple passive friction dampers. A parameter, gain multiplier defined as the ratio of damper force to critical damper control force, is investigated under four different real earthquake ground motions, which plays an important role in the present control algorithm of the damper. The numerically evaluated optimum parametric value is considered for the analysis of the structure with dampers. The numerical results of the variable friction dampers show better performance over the passive dampers in reducing the seismic response of structures.

  • In order to develop an active safety system which avoids or mitigates collisions with preceding vehicles such as autonomous emergency braking (AEB), accurate state estimation of the nearby vehicles is very important. In this paper, an algorithm is proposed using 3 dynamic models to better estimate the state of a vehicle which has various dynamic patterns in both longitudinal and lateral direction. In particular, the proposed algorithm is based on the Interacting Multiple Model (IMM) method which employs three different dynamic models, in cruise mode, lateral maneuver mode and longitudinal maneuver mode. In addition, a Probabilistic Data Association Filter (PDAF) is utilized as a data association algorithm which can improve the reliability of the measurement under a clutter environment. In order to verify the performance of the proposed method, it is simulated in comparison with a Kalman filter method which employs a single dynamic model. Finally, the proposed method is validated using radar data obtained from the field test in the proving ground.

  • Helical anchors are foundation structure that designed to resist uplift loads are installed by applying in load to shaft while rotating it into the ground. These can be a cost effective means of proving tension anchorage for foundation where soil conditions permit their installation because of ease of installation. At present time, tapered helical anchors are commonly used to carry uplift loads. The uplift capacity includes the following factors : the height of overburden above the top helix, the resistant along a cylinder, the weight of the soil in the cylinder and suction force. In order to make clear behavior characteristics of helical anchors with pullout, model tests were conducted with respect to various embedment depth, space of helix, shape of helix. Based on the experimental study, the following conclusions are drawn. 1) The uplift capacity of multi helical anchors increase with embedment ratio of anchors The increase is smooth after critical uplift capacity. 2) Critical breakout factors and critical embedment ratio of multi helical anchor exist 7∼8, 4∼6 respectively. 3) Variation of uplift capacity with helix spaces show down after S/D=5. 4) Critical breakout factors of helical anchor in the laboratory test are similar to Das's theory.

  • Suspension system of vehicle have enough endurance during its life time to protect passenger. Spring is one of major part of vehicle. Thus, a fatigue strength evaluation for leaf spring based on road load response was carried out. At first, strain of leaf spring is measured on the city condition and proving ground condition. And next, the damage analysis of road load response data was carried out. And fatigue test of leaf spring were also carried out. Based on -N life relation, fatigue life of leaf spring was evaluated at belgian mode, city mode and drawing test specification. After that, it is compared the design life of leaf spring and evaluated fatigue life by belgian mode, city mode and drawing test specification. From the above, the maximum load-fatigue life relation of leaf spring was defined by test. and new test target of belgian mode and city mode was proposed to accept design specification of leaf spring. It is expect that proposed test target can verify leaf spring fatigue endurance at specific road condition.

  • Vibration test using the MAST(multi axial simulation table) provide a more reliable testing environment than any conventional one. The multi axial simulation could be possible with a advanced control algorithm and hardware supports so that most of the operation is automatically conducted by MAST system itself except the input information that is synthesized by the measured response signals. That means the reliability of the vibration test is highly depended on the quality of the input profile. In this paper, the optimal algorithm based on the energy method is introduced to construct a best combination of candidated input PSD data could be constructed. Since the optimal algorithm renders time information, the nitration fatigue test is completely possible for any measured signals one wants. The proposed method is explained with representing acquired road signals from the candidate input PSD obtained from a proving ground.

  • This paper represents the development of 3-axises loadcell for measuring the side-force of suspension module of MPV(Multi Purposed Vehicle). The side force causes the failure of damper, such as leakage. The loadcell was developed using strain gauges, and the Wheastone bridge circuit to compensate for the cross-talk between the each axises and the measurement error by temperature. Structure analysis of loadcell was accomplished with FEM(Finite Element Method) to optimize the location of strain gages. The design optimization for important factors that have an effect on performance of loadcell was accomplished by using DOE(Design of Experiment). Loadcell was produced and successfully tested, showing good sensitivity and low cross-talk. The cross-talk of the developed loadcell is bellow 5%. The load history was measured at proving ground. The maximum side-force, the longitudinal force, and vertical force of MPV are 4.2 kN, 8.0 kN, and 17.0 kN, respectively, at Belgian road.

  • Skid mark and coefficient of friction are usually utilized to calculate the velocity and behavior of vehicles. For a critical case such as traffic accident reconstruction, however, the initial velocity of the car should be calculated precisely. In this study, in order to estimate the speed at the brake onset, rapid braking tests were executed on the proving ground. We compared with a skid length and wheel locking time of an expert driver and a general person. We verified that the skid mark of expert driver occurs longer than general person's. A new method is proposed to determine the speed of a vehicle at the brake onset of maximum braking, which could be applied to a reconstruction of vehicle with Non-ABS.

  • The height provisions, by the urban planning, describe the hightest height per width division, also define oblique line limitation by road without mentioning the highest per width division. Therefore this study will be a basic model for the standard of measuring the highest height per width division analysizing the propriety of current standard of oblique limitation. This technique is prepared to prevent the confusion and to complements the existing planning method. Therefore, it takes more time to establish this new method and to apply it to the existing condition. This study reviewed density control in District Units Plan, based on the guidelines of density, which included height, ratio of total floor to ground area, and land distribution. This study aims to provide efficient analysis by using current oblique limitation provisions Thus, proving the area rations of general residential areas are decreasing. Since the purpose of the District Units Plan is to avoid confusion and help ease the existing problematic conditions which have risen from the two above-mentioned conventional systems, further observation and research on these areas are necessary.

  • This study is a basic research to analyze and estimate the light environment of the classroom by serial correlation of time. Its purpose lies in the comparison by time period in order In select floor for laboratory and to calculate the uniformity factor. The proving ground is T building in W university, Which is five floor of central hall type. The subject of investigating is eight classrooms, four rooms in South and North, from the second floor that is net influenced by the shelter. The results that compared and estimated them in the illumination of daylight, Uniformity factor, Daylight factor, are as follows1. The illumination of classroom in South and North is over 10001x, but the classroom in North is good and the classroom in South excellent.2. The uniformity factor of classroom in South is good and that of classroom in North is normal.3. The daylight factor of each classroom is over 5% but the classroom in South is above that in North. The classroom in South surpasses the classroom in North in the general light environment and the classroom in third and fourth floor is so better than that in second and fifth floor in the condition of laboratory In the uniformity factor, the classroom in fourth can be better than any classroom.
