  • The protonation parameters, dissociation constants ($pK_{BH^+}$) of conjugate acid, slope values (m, ${\phi}$ and $m^*$) and correlation coefficients (r) of hydroxamic acids were determined by Hammett acidity function method, Bunnett-Olsen method and excess acidity method in hydrochloric and perchloric acid solutions. Effect of acid concentration on partition and percentage protonation was also studied. $pK_{BH^+}$ values show that hydroxamic acids do not behave as Hammett bases, but hydroxamic acids behave as weak bases in strong acidic solutions. The values of $pK_{BH^+}$ obtained through Bunnett-Olsen method and excess acidity method were compared with the Hammett acidity function. ChemAxon's MarvinSketch 6.1.5 software was also used for determining $pK_a$, pI and microspecies distribution (%) of hydroxamic acids with pH. Hydrogen donor and acceptor values and logD were also obtained. The results show that N-p-chlorophenyl-4-bromobenzohydroxamic acid has the highest $pK_a$ and lowest logD values. On the contrary, N-phenyl-3,5-dinitrobenzohydroxamic acid has lowest the $pK_a$ and highest logD values.

  • Copper(Ⅱ) complexes with N,N'-oxalylbis(salicylaldehydehydrazone), N,N'-malonylbis(salicylaldehydehydrazone) and N,N'-succinylbis(salicylaldehydehydrazone) have been prepared in 95% DMF. Their protonation and stability constants were investigated by potentiometric titration. We observed that MBSH ligand showed the largest protonation constant. The values of the protonation constants among three different ligands were increased as following order SBSH < OBSH < MBSH. However, the increasing order of stability constants was somewhat different such as Cu(Ⅱ)-SBSH < Cu(Ⅱ)-MBSH < Cu(Ⅱ)-OBSH. In addition, thermodynamic parameters, ΔH and ΔS of Cu(Ⅱ) complexes have been studied. As a result, we found the SBSH ligand produced the best stable copper (Ⅱ) complex.

  • The protonation equilibrium of 5-substituted 2-furaldehydes is investigated spectrophotometrically in aqueous sulfuric acid at $25^{\circ}C$ and the basicity constants(p$K_{BH+}$) of the substrates is calculated by means of the excess acidity method. The basicity constant of 5-metyl-2-furaldehyde having electron donating group is larger than that of 5- nitro-2-furaldehyde having electron withdrawing group. Difference between the basicity constants(p$K_{BH+}$) of these two compounds was about 3.25 pK unit. The m value which is the degree of solvation of the protonated substrate is similar to that of acetophenone having same protonation site. The dependence of p$K_{BH+}$ on m value shows good linear cor-relation.

  • Aqueous 6-hydroxyquinoline in the first excited singlet state undergoes protonation to the imine group first in 15 ps, then in the time scale of 40 ps deprotonation from the enol group and finally, however, quickly as in 11 ps electron rearrangement to change into a resonance hybrid structure of quinoid-prevailing forms. Despite the fact that the decay time constant is smaller than the formation time constant, fluorescence from excited protropic zwitterion is observed to assign its maximum at 510 nm. The electron rearrangement is basically an intramolecular charge transfer from the deprotonated oxygen atom to the positively charged iminium ring without any notable change in nuclear geometry, producing a zwitterionic quinoid structure with much a smaller electric dipole moment than the zwitterionic protropic species. This photoproduct formed by consecutive excited state proton and electron transfers shows a smaller dipole moment in S1 than in S0 and a hypsochromic shift although its S1 state has (π, π*) character.

  • We investigated the self-association and protonation state of norfloxacin, a member of quinokme antibiotics, using electric absorption and potentiom, etric titration. Both nitrogen at the piperazine ring and carboxylic acid were protonated at a low pH (cationic norfloxacin), and deprotonated at a high pH (anionic norfloxacin). In the intermediate pH range, a neutral species was dominant with the possibility of forming a zwitter ion. We also observed that nortloxacin molecules can be sracked to form a dimer at an intermediate pH, The equilibrium constant of the norfloxacin-DNA complex formation, which was measured by Stem-Volmermethod, increases as the pH of the system is lowered. This observation indicates that it is the cationic nortloxacin that forms a complex with DNA among various norfloxacin species in aqueous solution.

  • Polydentate Schiff base ligands, BSDT(1,9-bis(2-hydroxyphenyl)-2,5,8-triaza-1,8-nonadiene) having $N_3O_2$ atoms, BSTT(1,12-bis(2-hydroxyphenyl)-2,5,8,11-tetraaza-1,11-dodecadiene) having $N_4O_2$ atoms, BSTP(1,15-bis(2-hydroxyphenyl)-2,5,8,11,14-pentaaza-1,14-pentadodecadiene) having $N_5O_2$ atoms were synthesized. Protonation constants of these polydentate ligands were measured by potentiometry. Stability constants of the complexes between these ligands and the metal ions such as Cu(II), Ni(II) and Zn(II) were measured in DMSO by a polarographic method. It was observed that all metal(II) ions employed in this study formed 1:1 complexes with Schiff base ligands. Stability constants for the complex formation were in the order of Cu(II)>Ni(II)>Zn(II), and for the ligands were in the order of BSTP>BSTT>BSDT. There are due to the increase in the number of donor atoms. Both enthalpy and entropy changes were obtained in negative values. Exothermicity for the complex formation indicated tight binding between the ligands and metal ions. The negative entropy change would be related to the fact that solvent molecules are strongly interacting with the metal complexes.

  • Hydrolysis reactions of S-phenyl-S-vinyl-N-p-tosylsulfilimine (VSI) and its derivatives at various pH have been investigated kinetically. The hydrolysis reactions produced phenylvinylsulfoxide and p-toluene sulfonamide as the products. The reactions are first order and Hammett ρ values for pH 1.0, 6.0, and 11.0 are 0.82, 0.45, and 0.57, respectively. This reaction is not catalyzed by general base. The plot of k vs pH shows that there are three different regions of the rate constants $(k_t)$ in the profile.; At pH < 2 and pH > 10, the rate constants are directly proportional to the concentrations of hydronium and hydroxide ion catalyzed reactions, respectively. The rate constant remains nearly the same at 2 < pH < 10. On the bases of these results, the plausible hydrolysis mechanism and a rate equation have been proposed: At pH < 2.0, the reaction proceeds via the addition of water molecule to sulfur after protonation at the nitrogen atom of the sulfilimine, whereas at pH > 10.0, the reaction proceeds by the addition of hydroxide ion to sulfur directly. In the range of pH 2.0-10.0, the addition of water to sulfur of sulfilimine appears to be the rate controlling step.

  • The azacrown compounds, 1,4-dioxa-7,10,13-triazacyclopentadecane-N,N',N''-triacetic acid, $N-ac_3[15]aneN_3O_2(II_a)$ and 1,4-dioxa-7,10,13-triazacyclopentadecane-N,N',N''-tripropioc acid, $N-pr_3[15]aneN_3O_2(II_b)$ were synthesized by modified methods. Potentiometry was used to determine the protonation constant of the $N-ac_3[15]aneN_3O_2\;and\;N-pr_3[15]aneN_3O_2$. The stability constants of complexes of the trivalent metal ions of $Ce^{3+},\;Eu^{3+},Gd^{3+},and\;Yb^{3+}$ and divalent metal ions of $Co^{2+},\;Ni^{2+},\;Cu^{2+},\;and\;Zn^{2+}$ with the ligands $N-ac_3[15]aneN_3O_2\;and\;N-pr_3[15]aneN_3O_2$ have been determined at $25{\pm}0.1^{\circ}C$ in 0.1 M $NaClO_4$ solution by potentiometric methods. The metal ion affinities of the two triazamacrocyclic ligands with three pendant acetate or propionate groups are compared to those obtained for the similar ligands, 1,7-dioxa-4,10,13-triazacyclopentadecane-N,N',N''-triacetic acid, and 1,7-dioxa-4,10,13- triazacyclopentadecane-N,N',N''-tripropioc acid. The trends in stability of complexes for different metal ions due to changes in the nitrogen position of the donor atoms of the ligand are discussed.
