  • The flow characteristics in the thruster should be analyzed considering its geometry and the pressure ratio to estimate its performance and etc. This paper suggests the computational result of an axisymmetric real nozzle for the altitude control of a satellite to find out the application limit that the assumption of continuum mechanics holds. The steady non-reacted compressible flow field in the unstructured grid system is computed and analyzed with varying the environmental pressure (or the degree of vacuum) under the fixed pressure ratio in a real thruster of which the area ratio of exit to throat is 56. The assumption of the continuum mechanics is not approved when the environmental pressure is reduced less than $10^{-3}$ atm.

  • This experimental study has been conducted to scrutinize the effects of an ultrasonic standing wave (USW) on the propagating velocity and structure of methane/air premixed flame. Propagating flame was caught by high-speed Schlieren photography, and the variation of flame-behavior was analyzed in detail. It is revealed that horizontal splitting in burnt zone is resulted by the USW, and the flame propagation velocity is augmented due to the strengthened chemical reaction. Evolutionary feature of the flame perturbed by USW, maintaining a pseudo-symmetry of top and bottom flame-front about the propagation axis tends to be free from buoyancy effect.

  • In this paper, in order to control the burning rate and pressure exponent of HTPB/AP/Al based propellant for the improvement of performance, the effect of the size ratio of AP particles and various contents of Butacene as burning catalyst on combustion properties was investigated. In the propellant formulation with both $28{\mu}m$ Al of 23% and Butacene of 3%, the burning rate and pressure exponent were increased with increasing the contents of $9{\mu}m$ AP particles. And the burning rate was increased with increasing the contents of Butacene with showing the relatively low pressure exponent in the propellant containing Butacene. However, the significant variations of pressure exponent by contents of Butacene were not observed.

  • For the active control of a combustion instability, a change should be made in pressure fluctuation or heat release fluctuation using an acoustic driver or a secondary fuel injection. Also, to determine the location and timing of a secondary fuel injection, one needs to know the distribution of heat release fluctuation under combustion instability. In the present research, the distribution of heat release fluctuation has been experimentally measured by changing hydrocarbon fuel, inlet velocity, equivalence ratio, and acoustic forcing condition. It was confirmed that heat release fluctuation with regards to vortex shedding was significantly affected by the $Damk{\ddot{o}}hler$ number. Under the cases of the $Damk{\ddot{o}}hler$ number above approximately 4 - 5, hot spot region was generated in the leading edge of vortex and cold spot region was in the trailing edge. On the contrary, the cases of the $Damk{\ddot{o}}hler$ number below 3 showed the opposite trend.

  • Recently, environmental sustainability of the transitional explosives and propellants is an issue of growing importance in energetic materials. For examples, ammonium perchlorate(AP) as an solid propellants oxidizer could create a poisonous gas and atmospheric pollutions, such as HCl. Among the several oxidizers, hydrazinium nitroformate(HNF) is an effective candidate substance for eco-friendly oxidizer, which has high density, pressure index, and less smog generating property during combustion for the thrust control system. This study was controlled the size distribution and shapes through various conditions. Length and diameter ratio(L/D) of crystals has below 1 : 3, and the particle size was two types of $200{\mu}m$ and $50{\mu}m$.

  • The Coanda effect is the tendency for a fluid jet to atach itself to an adjacent surface and follow its contour without causing an appreciable flow separation. The jet is pulled onto the surface by the low pressure region which develops as entrainment pumps fluid from the region between the jet and the surface. Then the jet is held to the wall surface by the resulting radial pressure gradient which balance the inertial resistance of the jet to turning. The jet may attach to the surface and may be deflected through more than 180 dog, when the radius of the Coanda surface is sufficiently large compared to the height of the exhaust nozzle. However, if the radius of curvature is small, the jet turns through a smaller angle, or may not attach to the surface at all. In general, the limitations in size and weight of a device will limit the radius of the deflection surface. Thus much effort has been paid to improve the jet deflection in a variety of engineering fields. The Coanda effect has long been applied to improve aerodynamic characteristics, such as the drag/lift ratio of flight body, the engine exhaust plume thrust vectoring, and the aerofoil/wing circulation control. During the energy crisis of the seventies, the Coanda jet was applied to reduce vehicle drag and led to drag reductions of as much as about 30% for a trailer configuration. Recently a variety of industrial applications are exploiting another characteristics of the Coanda jets, mainly the enhanced turbulence levels and entrainment compared with conventional jet flows. Various industrial burners and combustors are based upon this principle. If the curvature of the Coanda surface is too great or the operating pressure too high, the jet flow will break away completely from the surface. This could have catastrophic consequences for a burner or combustor. Detailed understanding of the Coanda jet flow is essential to refine the design to maximize the enhanced entrainment in these applications.

  • Supersonic/Hypersonic wind tunnel is a facility which is intended to test and to observe the physical phenomena around a model by creating supersonic flow in the test section. In designing an airplane, the wind tunnel test is demanded to analyzing aerodynamic characteristics of the model without making a prototype. In this research, the model aerodynamic facility(MAF) is modified for the purpose of increasing running time and its functionality. New pneumatic valves for remote control was installed for safety requirement, and new air tanks was installed on MAF as well. A pipe system is also modified to use those new valves and tanks, and the ceiling and side glasses of the test section are switched to ones with the larger surface area. After the MAF modification, a test is performed at Mach 2, 3 and 4. In this test, shadow graph technique, one of the flow visualization methods, is used to visualize supersonic flow field. The pressure in the settling chamber and working section at Mach 2, 3 and 4 was measured in each case. As a result, the possible model size and running time are obtained.
