  • Recently, as a result of the application of large and multi-blade propellers with high efficiency for large vessels, the vertical bending stiffness of propulsion shafting system tends to be declined. For some specific vessels, the shaft arrangement leads to the forward stern tube bearing to be omitted, decreasing vertical bending stiffness. In this respect, decreased vertical bending stiffness causes the problem which is the blade order resonance frequency to be placed within the operational rpm range of propulsion shafting system. To verify whirling vibration, the measurement should be carried out covering from operating rpm up to target rpm, however, the range is un-measurable generally. In order to resolve the measurement issue, this study shows the measuring method and the assessment method of relevant natural frequency of whiling vibration by using measured harmonic order component of whirling vibration.

  • Prime movers in most large merchant ships adapt two stroke low speed diesel engine which has higher efficiency, mobility and durability. However, severe torsional vibration in these diesel engines may be induced by higher fluctuation of combustion pressures. Consequently, it may lead sometimes to propulsion shafting failure due to the accumulated fatigue stresses. Shaft fatigue strength analysis had been done traditionally in time domain but this method is complicated and difficult in analysing bi-modal vibration system such as the case of cylinder misfiring condition. In this paper authors introduce an assessment method of fatigue strength estimation for propulsion shafting system with two stroke low speed diesel engine in the frequency domain.

  • In the case of long-stator linear drives, unlike rotative drives for which speed or position sensors are a single unit attached to the shaft, these sensors extend along the guideway. The position signal transmitted from maglev vehicle can't meet the need of the real-time propulsion control. In this paper the position estimator for propulsion inverter driving long stator linear synchronous motor (LSLSM) in high speed maglev train is proposed. In order to get the higher resolution of the position information transmitted from vehicle, Full order state observer is proposed for position estimator.

  • Gear designers need to select the proper tolerances for deviations in both the center distance and parallelism of axes because these deviations cause high stresses and lead to fatigue breakage of the teeth. In this study, a three-dimensional finite element analysis model was developed for a helical gear used in metro vehicles, and a bending stress analysis method for gear pairs was established according to the contact position change. Using this model, the effect of shaft misalignment due to the center distance and shaft parallelism deviations on the bending stress of the gear was analyzed. As a result, the magnitude of the bending stress changed nearly linearly with the change in the center distance deviation. The tooth contact of the helical gear is biased toward the end of the tooth width when the parallelism deviations of the shaft occur, and the tooth root bending stress increases.

  • The operation of a gas-turbine engine gradually deteriorates the performance of its main components and often generates the defects of its components. The GPA method has been usually used for the diagnosis of the deterioration. In this study, the diagnostic code of the engine performance using the thermodynamic sensitivity between the sensed parameters and the health parameters has been developed without an application of the commercial program. The single performance deterioration of the turbo-shaft engine for SUAV has been estimated with this code.

  • With the results of calculation for natural frequencies the reponses of forced coupled vibration of propulsion shafting system were investigated by the modal analysis method. For the forced vibration response analysis, the axial exciting forces, the axial damper/detuner, propeller exciting forces and damping coefficients were extensively considered. As the conclusion of this study, some items are cleared as follows.-The torsional vibration amplitudes are not influenced by the radial excitation forces of the crank shaft. -The axial vibration amplitudes are influenced by the tangential exciting forces as well as the radial exciting forces of the crank shaft. The increase of the amplitudes is observed in the speed range at the neighbourhood of any torsional critical speed. 1The closer the torsional and axial critical speed. the larger coupling effect becomes. -The axial exciting force of propeller is relatively strong comparing with axial exciting forces of cylinder gas pressure and oscillating inertia of reciprocating mechanism. Therefore, the following conclusions are obtained. -Torsional vibration calculation with the classical one dimensional model is still valid. -The influence of torsional excitation at each crank upon the axial vibration is improtant. especially in the neighbourhood of a torsional critical speed. That means that the calculation of axial vibration with the classical one dimensional model is inaccurate in most of cases.

  • High reliability and minimization of operating cost are important problems for both engine-manufacturer and user in operation of gas-turbine engine, for which various performance diagnostics including a fault identification have been a major issue nowadays. Performance estimation in the off-design conditions, however, encounters problems of large errors and of poor convergence because of much required data to be evaluated. In this study, a diagnostics code of engine performance has been developed by using GPA(Gas Path Analysis). Quantitative performance deterioration of the turbo-shaft engine for SUAV has been estimated with altitude variation and is compared with that obtained by GSP code.

  • Because of accumulation of operation time, the performance of main components(compressor, combustor, turbine, etc.) come to be deteriorated in gas-turbine engine. So, high reliability and minimun of expense are important problem for engine manufacturer and user in operation of gas-turbine engine. In this study, the diagnostic code of the engine performance using the thermodynamic sensitivity between the sensed parameters and the health parameters has been developed without an application of the commercial program. The single performance deterioration of the turbo-shaft engine has been estimated with this code.
