  • In the current study, the numerical method was established to predict the performance of a solid rocket motor with two kinds of propellants. On the basis of a numerical study, an internal ballistics analysis code was developed. To verify the internal ballistics analysis code two solid rocket motors were manufactured and tested. The accuracy and applicability of the internal ballistics code for dual-propellant solid rocket motor were verified by comparing the experimental results with the numerical calculation.

  • The propulsion Motor system has changed from the DC motor system to the induction motor system. Although the induction motor system has almost reached the stage of maturity, this system also need changed to the IPMSM system for direct drive without reduction gear. Thus, the IPMSM(Interior buried Permanent magnet synchronous Motor) has been adopted to meet the driving specification. In this paper, loss characteristic analysis of IPMSM has been performed using adopted F.E.M.

  • Electric vehicles (EV) and hybrid EVs (HEV) are designed and manufactured by GM, Toyota, Honda, and Hyundai motors. The propulsion system design process for EV requires integrating subsystem designs into an overall system model to maximize the performance of a given propulsion architecture. Therefore, high-power density and high-torque density are important attributes required for EV applications. To improve torque and power density, propulsion motors are designed for saturation during high-torque operation. The nonlinearity associated with core saturation is modeled by incorporating the cross-coupling inductances, which also behave nonlinearly. Furthermore, in EV environments, the battery is directly connected to the DC link, and the battery changes depending on the state of charge. It will be onerous if as many optimal current commands as different $V_{dc}$ were made. This paper presents the optimal current commands in the various operating condition and the current control technique in EV environments.

  • This paper presents one of the methods for design to reduce the noise and vibration of 200kW motor for electric propulsion ship. One of the important factors affecting vibration of the motor is the resonance. The natural frequency and natural mode of the 200kW motor is analyzed by using FEM tool and impact test equipment to avoid the resonance. Also, compare FEM result with impact test result to make a reliable FE model of 200kW motor. In order to find out the effect of the noise and vibration of the motor by electromagnetic excitation force, conduct electromagnetic-structure coupled analysis. These characteristics are much useful to design 200kW motor for electric propulsion ship.

  • An electric propulsion system integrated with the ship service distribution system offers the naval architect considerable flexibility, and often the choice of a more affordable ship to acquire and operate as compared to a segregated mechanical drive option. United States of America navy announced in 2000 that they selected the electric propulsion system on next generation warship. Specially there is excellent advantages in superconductivity motors which can have higher efficiency, less vibration and noise, smaller dimensions compared with the conventional motors. The 5 MW HTS motor for warship test of electric propulsion was developed and tested. Also it was contracted between AMSC and United States of America navy to develop a 36.5 MW HTS motor in 3 years since March 3, 2003. This paper deals with the technical development tendency of HTS motors in foreign countries as well as in domestic, and it is focused on the application of HIS motors to the electrical propulsion system.

  • We investigate some operation characteristics and energy efficiency of the BLDC motor system driven by different two types power conversion method depends on same battery source for applying to electrical motor propulsion system of a small ship. Also, we suggest an estimation manner of operating performances such as total running distance and operating speed of ships from basic discharge voltage characteristics of batteries. Through some experiments, direct power conversion was better than indirect method on the view point of energy efficiency and the voltage discharge characteristics could be used as important design factor for estimating operating performances of small ships driven by electrical motors.

  • In order to develop a deep-underground great train express (GTX) in South Korea, the specifications decision and development of a traction control system (including an inverter and a traction motor), which considers a variety of route conditions, must be advanced. In this study, we examined the running resistance properties of a high-speed traction system based on a variety of tunnel types and vehicle organization methods. Then, we studied the power requirements necessary for the traction motor to maintain balanced speed in the high-speed traction system. From this, we determined the design criteria for the development of a high-speed traction system for use in the deep-underground GTX. Finally, we designed a linear induction motor (LIM) for a propulsion system, and we used the finite element method (FEM) to analyze its performance as it travelled through deep-underground tunnels.

  • A hybrid rocket engine capable of thrust throttling and underwater-working was developed for the underwater high-speed vehicle propulsion system. The hybrid rocket engine was designed and made by two types of ground test motor and underwater working motors. An engine performance was verified by the ground tests with the ground test motor and in the case of underwater motors the ground tests and underwater tests were performed. For the underwater operation a two-stage ignition system was adopted and a rupture disc was installed at the end of nozzle for a water-tight just before an ignition. Successful ignition and propulsion were confirmed in the underwater test with the final selected double rupture disc.

  • Electric propulsion motors are operated from a variable frequency drive, which supplies power to motors at a frequency appropriate to the desired speed. The objective of this study was to evaluate power converters for shipboard applications and to recommend converters that meet lower harmonic distortion levels and torque ripples. Two systems were studied in detail : Cyclo-converters and PWM-converters. Cyclo-converters are the obvious choice where size, weight and efficiency are the most critical issues. However they have a disadvantage in power factor and they produce severe torque ripples in the motor which makes them unacceptable without special systems. PWM-converters produces better motor current waveform and eliminates common mode voltage issues at the motor, but suffers a multiple stages of power conversion and the isolating transformer. Results of this case study show that PWM-converters are more advanced and efficient drives for induction motor of electric propulsion ship.

  • Currently, vector control is used for speed control of trains because induction motor has high performance is installed in Electric railroad systems. Also, control of the induction motor is possible through various methods by developing inverters and control theory. Presently, rolling stocks which use the induction motor are possible to brake trains by using AC motor. Therefore model of motor block and induction motor is needed to adapt various methods. There is Variable Voltage Variable Frequency (VVVF) as the control method of the induction motor. The torque and speed is controlled in the VVVF. The propulsion system model in the electric railroad has many sub-systems. So, the analysis of performance of the speed control is very complex. In this paper, simulation models are suggested by using Matlab/Simulink in the speed control characteristic. On the basis of the simulation models, the response to disturbance input is analyzed about the load. Also, the current, speed and flux control model are proposed to analyze the speed control characteristic in the train propulsion system.
