  • As a smallest unit of the game story, quest needs to be analyzed in terms of structure in order to study quest storytelling. This thesis introduces structuralist theory of narrative function of folk-tale by Propp to determine the structure of the quest. Propp proposed immutable elements of the characters as 31 kinds of Folk-tale functions. I analyzed assigning quests in MMORPG. As a result, 13 essential functions of the Quest, and 5 add-ons were drawn and the order among functions was figured out. Most quests in MMORPG followed the order of the essential functions and optional add-ons and showed a repeating pattern. The essential and optional functions and its order can be utilized to arrange appropriate element for quest storytelling and to strengthen and lead the various ways of the quest storytelling.

  • In the main current 3D animations which are put on the screens, the characters in the animations have a directly effect on the audiences by being closely connected with their descriptive constructions. In this research i am going to recognize the importance of characters and trace the points of sameness in the characters that appear in the 3D animations by analysing them. For this, 1 divided the characters that made lots of box-office profits all over the world and were made at Pixar which focused on characters and stories into 7 types according to written by Vladimir Propp and grasped the characters with MBTI system. 1 found out the points of sameness between the characters with this system. That will be able to be made use of referring the streams of stories and fixing the characters at the planning and producing stages. If we should make a study of figures, expressions, motions of the characters in connection with this research, it could help us to create the characters which are suitable for animations not only formative elements but also acting.

  • The roles of the characters of 3D animation Toystory3, which was released in 2010 and achieved worldwide success, can be classified into typical, simple and easy-to-understand roles such as hero, villain, princess, and assistant. However, the process, in which each character's role is finally recognized by the audience, is embodied in a very colorful and exquisite manner and makes the curiosity of the audience continue effectively. The stream of the diverse role changes of the characters of Toystory3 is represented through "visual rhythm of the lighting design" and such rhythm can be confirmed most clearly in the digital colorscript stage. This researcher analyzed the characters' role changes in the work based on Propp's folktale character analysis theory, and extracted the core scenes that lead to inference, doubt, performance, reinforcement by character in order to grasp how the audience gasps major characters' role changes. The visual differences of the lighting design, which the four core scenes of each character show, were represented in graph and analyzed, and the results showed that the changes that one character has constituted rhythmical, visual contrast gradually and the rhythms of each independent character achieve visual contrast and harmony each other like the voice part of polyphony. This researcher calls this "the visual counterpoint of character's changing" and derives the conclusion that a dual visual counterpoint is hidden in the character production of the full-length animation Toystory3. Along with this, this researcher proposes the production of full-length animation that actively utilizes constructive aesthetics.

  • This analysis is intended to approach a computer game in the context of cultural-study theories. The semiotics can be applied to various area, and it is assumed to also applied to computer games. In semiotical background we tried to analyze the mythology of Starcraft mainly by using Propp's narratives theory and Brathes' mythologies theory. In the narratives of Starcraft, we fouind some simplified functions which penetrate the internal structure. And while most of the games having paradigmatic flow in narratives, Starcraft has syntagmatic flow mainly because of the function of network. With these conditions, we could find some mythologies in Starcraft : (1) naturalization of discipline and control, (2) time and space as resources, (3) deprivation of values of object.

  • The transformation of plots using the archetypical narratives is not just a repetition of the past story, but finding a new suitable meaning for present time and society. Due to this, the story can be variated depending on what the transformation has the main point for. Disney's animation overcomes the narrative feature of the past classic fairy tale that worked only for particular age and people, and recognized as a contemporary story that can give impression to more various people. This study use Vladimir Propp's Morphology of the Folktale, Carl Gustav Jung's complexes and shadow theory to examine how this animation is modernly recreated by transforming the archetypical narrative. As a result, we can find characteristics of structure and function for contemporary story, and those also work with characters in the recreated animation. Through this study we discovered that Disney's animation is a transfiguration of archetypical narrative through the exhaustive analysis, and this could be the helpful research for the future creation of animation which uses the archetypical narratives.

  • The methodology for adapting fairy tales has long been used in the making of cultural products. The downside of this methodology is to discover the modern value of fairy tales and to adapt it to the trend to deliver messages. In this paper, I believe that the universal idea of fairy tales will be a way to elicit sympathy from the audience. A story adapted from the story " Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs " in 1937 played an important role in the development of animation. Disney then continued to create animations that adapt to the original character. Since the beginning of 2013, Disney has changed the theme of the original book, story structure, character setting, and created its own adaptation system. " Morphology of the Folk Tale " is a system of analysis derived from many fairy tales that can be conducted accurately on most fairy tales. The purpose of this paper is to use Morphology of the Folk Tale to analyze the changed functions of and to analyze the system used by Disney in fairy tales. As a result, Disney found that when it was adapted to B, it chose a family that matched the modern history. He also changed the relationship of characters in the premise that the plot of the story has not changed. Disney's analysis of the changing system in the adaptation of can be traced to other similar works.
