  • This paper presents the results of sensitivity analysis based on an example study to verify a newly developed reliability-based model for rock slopes considering uncertainties of discontinuities and failure modes-plane, wedge, and toppling. The parameters that are needed for sensitivity analysis are the variability of discontinuity properties (orientation and strength of discontinuities), the loading conditions, and the rock slope geometry. The variability in orientation and friction angle of discontinuities, which can not be considered in the deterministic analysis, has a great influence on the rock slope stability, The stability of rock slopes including failure modes is more influenced by the selection of dip direction of cutting rock face than any other design variables, The example study shows that the developed reliability-based analysis model can reasonably assess the stability of rock slope.

  • 9 nuclear power plants are presently in operation in Korea. They produce radioactive waste of which the most long-lived radioactive elements need to be safely stored for hundreds of thousands of years, isolated from humanity and the environment. The safe disposal of high level radioactive waste in mined cavities requires knowledge of the mechanical. thermal and fluid flow characteristics of rock as perturbed by a thermal pulse The literature review was performed to assemble data on the following properties: modulus tensile strength compressive strength thermal expansion specific heat, thermal conductivity thermal diffusivity and permeability.

  • HLW canister array was designed by FLLSSM program, considering the thermal concentration. Rock properties were chosen as those of granite, the most possible bedrock for the repository in Korea. It was shown that repository area and excavation volumes can be determined by the pitch or distance between canisters. Pitch can be reduced to 0.6 m assuming the tolerance temperature as 200$^{\circ}C$. Thermal concentration was reduced as storage time for cooling the canister passed. After 10 years of storage the thermal problems seemed to be negligible.

  • In this study, a stochastic finite element model is proposed with a view to consider the uncertainty of physical properties of discontinuous rock mass in the analysis of structural behavior on underground caverns. In so doing, the LHS(Latin Hypercube sampling) technique has been applied to make up weak points of the Crude Monte Carlo technique. Concerning the effect of discontinuities, a joint finite element model is used that is known to be superior in explaining faults, cleavage, things of that nature. To reflect the uncertainty of material properties, the variables such as the the elastic modulus, the poisson's ratio, the joint shear stiffness, and the joint normal stiffness have been used, all of which can be applicable through normal distribution, log-normal distribution, and rectangulary uniform distribution. The validity of the newly developed computer program has been confirmed in terms of verification examples. And, the applicability of the program has been tested in terms of the analysis of the circular cavern in discontinuous rock mass.

  • In this paper, an experimental program was undertaken to test the analysis on Component and mechanical characteristics for crushed stone of excavated Rocks from Sandstone, Shale, Mudstone, for use as a new source of aggregate. Physical and mechanical properties, required for aggregate materials, of major constituents of rock wastes including Sandstone, Shale, Mudstone, Felsite, Basalt, Marl were measured in the laboratory Test results showed that the Shale, Felsite, Basalt tested in this study might possibly be used for construction aggregates. In case of Sandstone and Mudstone, some physical properties such as rock strength were generally adoptable but the aggregate characteristics were lower than required.

  • To investigate the vertical petrological and hydrological characteristics of fractured rock, geophysical and chemical logging were executed at 5 boreholes installed in the study area. The geophysical and hydrochemical logging data were analysed by using principal components analysis (PCA). Three main variables from PCA explained 86.4% of total variance of geophysical log data. The PCA results showed that PCl is closely related to groundwater properties and PC2 and PC3 are influenced by rock and fracture properties. Hydrochemical analysis indicated the presence of highly fractrued zone at the depth of 60m.

  • This paper represents a case study to determine optimal rock properties and to analyse the safety of slopes excavated in faulted and severly weathered ground. The study site consists of two slopes with a length of 240m and a height of 30m in contact with a tunnel. Significant efforts have been exerted for determining the proper strength parameters such as cohesion and internal friction of rockmass by back analyses as well as laboratory and in-situ tests. Limit equilibrium analyses have also been conducted using these properties.
