In this paper, a numerical study is carried out to investigate the turbulent flow around a twin-skeg container ship model with rudders including propeller effects. A commercial CFD code, FLUENT is used with body forces distributed on the propeller disk to simulate the ship stem and wake flows with the propeller in operation. A multi-block, matching, structured grid system has been generated for the container ship hull with twin-skegs in consideration of rudders and body-force propeller disks. The RANS equations for incompressible fluid flows are solved numerically by using a finite volume method. For the turbulence closure, a Reynolds stress model is used in conjunction with a wall function. Computations are carried out for the bare hull as well as the hull with appendages of a twin-skeg container ship model. For the bare hull, the computational results are compared with experimental data and show generally a good agreement. For the hull with appendages, the changes of the stem flow by the rudders and the propellers have been analyzed based on the computed result since there is no experimental data available for comparison. It is found the flow incoming to the rudders has an angle of attack due to the influence of the skegs and thereby the hull surface pressure and the limiting streamlines are changed slightly by the rudders. The axial velocity of the propeller disk is found to be accelerated overall by about 35% due to the propeller operation with the rudders. The area and the magnitude of low pressure on the hull surface enlarge with the flow acceleration caused by the propeller. The propellers are found to have an effect on up to the position where the skeg begins. The propeller slipstream is disturbed strongly by the rudders and the flow is accelerated further and the transverse velocity vectors are weakened due to the flow rectifying effect of the rudder.

In this study, a numerical analysis was performed on 26 inch single and coaxial propeller using the ANSYS Fluent 19.0 Solver to analyse the effect of the distance between coaxial propellers as one of the design parameter. The Moving Reference Frame (MRF) method was used for single propeller, while the sliding mesh method was used for a coaxial propeller to analyse the flow field varying with azimuth angle. The thrust and power are decreased as the upper and lower propeller approaching each other. As H/D is increased, interference between the propellers is decreased. According to the flow field variable contour of the coaxial propeller, it appears that the change in aerodynamic performance is due to the loading effect and the tip vortex wake effect.

Simulations of cavitation flow and hull pressure fluctuation for a marine propeller operating behind a hull using the unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations (RANS) are presented. A full hull body submerged under the free surface is modeled in the computational domain to simulate directly the wake field of the ship at the propeller plane. Simulations are performed in design and ballast draught conditions to study the effect of cavitation number. And two propellers with slightly different geometry are simulated to validate the detectability of the numerical simulation. All simulations are performed using a commercial CFD software FLUENT. Cavitation patterns of the simulations show good agreement with the experimental results carried out in Samsung CAvitation Tunnel (SCAT). The simulation results for the hull pressure fluctuation induced by a propeller are also compared with the experimental results showing good agreement in the tendency and amplitude, especially, for the first blade frequency.

The DSME guide plate(GP) has been developed with the target to improve the cavitation and vibration performance when used with discharging cooling water around the outlet of LNG carrier. It was proven that it could as well be applied as a powerful wake control device on its own, even without discharging cooling water. However, it has to be taken into account that it inevitably results in speed loss. This study shows the possibility to design a GP which simultaneously improves both vibration and speed performance. The study intends to outline how to design the preliminary GP configurations from both the vibration and the speed performance points of view. Further, the study offers design guidance for the hull form and the propeller when adapting GP as a wake control device.

In this study, wind tunnel test on Quad-Tilt Propeller which has tandem wings is carried out to analyze the aerodynamic interference effect of front wing and propeller on rear wing during forward flight. Using 6-axis balance system, forces and moments of whole aircraft were measured and using strain gauge at wing root, bending moments were measured to observe change of aerodynamic force of each wings. A 12-hole probe was used to measure the flow field in the wing and propeller wake. Flow characteristics were observed qualitatively through flow visualization experiment using tuft and smoke. To measure the aerodynamic interference by elements, the influence of front wing and propeller on rear wing was analyzed by changing the wings and propellers mount combination.

In the ship design process, ship motion and propulsion performance in sea waves became very important issues. Especially, prediction of ship propulsion performance during real operation is an important challenge to ship owners for economic operation in terms of fuel consumption and route-time evaluation. Therefore, it should be considered in the early design stages of the ship. It is thought that the averaged value and fluctuation of effective inflow velocity to the propeller have a great effect on the propulsion performance in waves. However, even for the nominal velocity distribution, very few results have been presented due to some technical difficulties in experiments. In this study, flow measurements near the propeller plane using a stereo PIV system were performed. Phase-averaged flow fields on the propeller plane of a KVLCC2 model ship in waves were measured in the towing tank by using the stereo PIV system and a phase synchronizer with heave motion. The experiment was carried out at fully loaded condition with making surge, heave and pitch motions free at a forward speed corresponding to Fr=0.142 (Re=2.55×106) in various head waves and calm water condition. The phase averaged nominal velocity fields obtained from the measurements are discussed with respect to effects of wave orbital velocity and ship motion. The low velocity region is affected by pressure gradient and ship motion.

The effects of the combination of blade number for forward and after propeller on the propeller shaft forces of a contra-rotating propeller (CRP) system are presented in the paper. The research is performed through the numerical simulations based on the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations (RANS). The simulation results of the present method in open water condition are validated comparing with the experimental data as well as the other numerical simulation results based on the potential method for 4-0-4 CRP (3686+3687A) and 4-0-5 CRP (3686+3849) of DTNSRDC. Two sets of CRP are designed and simulated to study the effect of the combination of blade number in behind-hull condition. One set consists of 3-blade and 4-blade, while the other is 4-blade and 4-blade. A full hull body submerged under the free surface is modeled in the computational domain to simulate directly the wake field of the ship at the propeller plane. From the simulation results, the fluctuations of axial force and moment are dominant in the case of same blade numbers for forward and after propellers, whereas the fluctuations of horizontal and vertical forces and moments are very large in the case of different blade numbers.

A numerical method in frequency domain for the analysis of the acoustic wave equation governing the sound field generated by a non-cavitating propeller under a steady of unsteady loading condition is developed. Theory shows that only multiples of the blade passage frequency exist and that the wave number consists of the frequency component due to the nonuniformity of the wake and the Doppler effect originated from the rotation of the blades. Correlation with experiments for a two bladed propeller, designed to be load-free at a particular advance speed, indicate that the thickness effect can be significant in steady case, but can be negligible compared to the unsteady loading effect.

The numerical simulation of two-dimensional moving blade row interactions is conducted by CFD means to investigate the interactions between the front and rear propeller in a stratospheric airship contra-rotating open propeller configuration caused by different rotational speeds. The rotational speed is a main factor to affect the propeller Reynolds number which impact the aerodynamic performance of blade rows significantly. This effect works until the Reynolds number reaches a high enough value beyond which the coefficients become independent. Additionally, the interference on the blade row has been revealed by the investigation. The front blade row moves in the induced-velocity field generated by the rear blade row and the aerodynamic coefficients are influenced when the rear blade row has fast RPMs. The rear blade row moving behind the front one is affected directly by the wake and eddies generated by the front blade row. The aerodynamic coefficients reduce when the front blade row has slow RPMs while increase when the front blade row moves faster than itself. But overall, the interference on the front blade row due to the rear blade row is slight and the interference on the rear blade row due to the front blade row is much more significant.

This article examines the scale effect of the flow characteristics, resistance and propulsion performance on a 317k VLCC. The turbulent flows around a ship in both towing and self-propulsion conditions are analyzed by solving the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation together with the application of Reynolds stress turbulence model. The computations are carried out in both model- and full-scale. A double-body model is applied for the treatment of free surface. An asymmetric body-force propeller is used. The speed performances including resistance and propulsion factors are obtained from two kinds of methods. One is to analyze the computational results in model scale through the revised ITTC' 78 method. The other is directly to analyze the computational results in full scale. Based on the computational predictions, scale effects of the resistance and the self-propulsion factors including form factor, thrust deduction fraction, effective wake fraction and various efficiencies are investigated. Scale effects of the streamline pattern, hull pressure and local flow characteristics including x-constant sections, propeller and center plane, and transom region are also investigated. This study presents a useful tool to hull-form and propeller designers, and towing-tank experimenters to take the scale effect into consideration.
