Noises from the large scale marine propeller are calculated numerically on non-cavitation condition. The hydrodynamic analysis are carried out by potential based panel method with time marching free wake approach. The distribution of hyrodynamic loads on the propeller surface and noise signals are obtained using the unsteady Bernoulli's equation and the Farasssat formula respectively. It turns out that the noise signal shows strong peak at the blade passage frequency. Noise signals and directivity patterns for both the thickness and the loading noise are compared with each other. The directivity pattern for the loading noise shows minor lobe at the backward side of the rotating disc plane.
As the propeller end speed increases, the propeller surface is damaged in the process of bubble formation and dropout. It is intended to prevent the corrosion of the propeller by modifying the shape of the end through the winglet structure to mitigate the cavitation phenomenon. In the case of conventional SUS materials, the cost of production is so high that plastic materials are used to prevent corrosion. This paper aims to mitigate the cavitation by deforming the shape of the end through the winglet structure by using the SMC composite material of the propeller using the existing SUS.

A new propeller series is developed using the newly developed blade section(KH18 section) which behaves better cavitation characteristics and higher lift-drag ratio at wide range of angle-of-attack. The pitch and camber distributions are disigned in order to have the same radial and chordwise loading distribution with the selected circumferentially averaged wake input. Since the geometries of the series propeller, such as chord length, thickness, skew and rate distribations, are selected by regression of the recent full scale propeller geometric data, the performance prediction of a propeller at preliminary design stage can be mure realistic. Number of blades of the series propellers is 4 and the expanded blade area ratios are 0.3, 0.45, 0.6 and 0.75. Mean pitch ratios are selected as 0.5, 0.65, 0.8, 0.75 and 1.1 for each expanded area ratio. The new propeller series is composed of 20 propellers and is named as KD(KRISO-DAEWOO) propeller series. Propeller open water tests are performed at the experimental towing tank, and the cavitation observation tests and fluctuating pressure measurements are carried out at the cavitation tunnel of KRISO. $B_{P}-\delta$ curves, which can be used to select the optimum propeller diameter at the preliminary design stage, are derived from a regression analysis of the propeller often water test results. The KD-cavitation chart is derived from the cavitation observation test results by choosing the local maximum lift coefficient and the local cavitation number as parameters. The caviy extent of a propeller can be predicted more accurately by using the KD-cavitation chart at a preliminary design stage, since it is derived from the results of the cavitation observation tests in the selected ship's wake, whereas the existing cavitation charts, such as the Burrill's cavitation chart, are derived from the test results in uniform flow.
The materials used in a ship screw propeller are commonly made with brass. The seawater corrosion and seawater cavitation of the screw propeller reduces the propulsive performance of the ship. In screw manufacturing, the corrosion rust of the screw propeller is removed through a hand grinding method. The grinding process produces dust of the heavy metals from the brass. The dust creates a poor working environment that is harmful to the health of the workers. An automatic corrosionrust removing apparatus, using a blasting method, was developed for the improvement of screw polishing conditions and its working environment. The performance of this apparatus was investigated by surface roughness, weight loss rate, hardness, electrochemical corrosion resistance, and cavitation erosion, after removing of the corrosion rust under various blasting conditions. Two medias of alumina and emery were used in this experiment. The surface roughness and hardness of the screw were improved by this apparatus. The electrochemical corrosion potential (Ecorr) and current density (Icorr) were measured by the dynamic polarization method, using a potentiostat, under the conditions of surface polishing with grinding, blasting, wire brushing, and fine sand papering. The test results prove that the new corrosion rust-removing apparatus improves the surface performance of a screw propeller.

A marine propeller is designed for preventing cavitation priority. Cavitation is a phenomenon which is defined as the vibration or noise by dropping the pressure on the high-speed rotation of the propeller. There has to be a enough thrust on the low-speed rotation for preventing cavitation. Thus, it has to be considered in the increasing of the number of blade and the angle of wing to design the propeller. In addition, flow resistance will be increasing by narrowing the width between blades. So high quality surface roughness of the hub to minimize flow resistance is required. Interference problems with tool and neighboring surfaces often take place from this kind of characteristics of the propeller. During 5-Axis machining of these propellers, the excessive local interference avoidance, necessary to avoid interference, leads to inconsistency of cutter posture, low quality of machined surface. Therefore, in order to increase the surface quality, it is necessary to minimize the cutter posture changes and create a continuous tool path while avoiding interference. This study, by using a MC-space algorithm for interference avoidance and a MB-spline algorithm for continuous control, is intended to create a 5-Axis machining tool path with excellent surface quality. Also, an effectiveness is confirmed through a verification manufacturing.
Noise originating from incipient propeller cavitation is assumed to come from a limited number of sources emitting a broadband signal. Conventional methods for cavitation localization have limitations because they cannot distinguish adjacent sound sources effectively due to low accuracy and resolution. On the other hand, sparse Bayesian learning technique demonstrates high-resolution restoration performance for sparse signals and offers greater resolution compared to conventional cavitation localization methods. In this paper, an incipient propeller cavitation localization method using sparse Bayesian learning is proposed and shown to be superior to the conventional method in terms of accuracy and resolution through experimental data from a model ship.

In order to investigate Propeller Open Water (POW) characteristics for the high-speed propeller in Large Cavitation Tunnel (LCT), the high-capacity inclined-shaft dynamometer was designed and manufactured. Its measuring capacities of thrust and torque are ${\pm}2200N$ and ${\pm}120N-m$, respectively. The driving motor is directly connected to the propeller shaft. Inclined angle of the propeller shaft can be adjusted up to ${\pm}10^{\circ}$. As the pressure inside LCT can be adjusted in the range of 0.1~3.0bar, we can carry out the POW test at high Reynolds number (above $1.0{\times}10^6$) without propeller cavitation and the cavitation test in uniform flow. After the new dynamometer setup in LCT, the Reynolds number variation test and propeller open-water test were conducted at the inclined angle of $0^{\circ}$ and $6^{\circ}$. The present POW results of the new dynamometer are compared with those of the existing high-capacity dynamometer in LCT and of the dynamometer in the towing-tank. Through systematic model tests and comparison with their results, the performance of the new inclined-shaft dynamometer was verified. It is thought the POW test for the high-speed propeller should be better conducted at high Reynolds number.

Cavitation is the dominant noise source of the marine vehicle. Of the various types of cavitation , tip vortex cavitation is the first appearance type of marine propeller cavitation and it generates high frequency noise. In this study, tip vortex cavitation behavior and noise are numerically investigated. A numerical scheme using Eulerian flow field computation and Lagrangian particle trace approach is applied to simulate the tip vortex cavitation on the hydrofoil. Vortex flow field is simulated by combined Moore and Saffman's vortex core radius equation and Sculley vortex model. Tip vortex cavitation behavior is analyzed by coupled Rayleigh-Plesset equation and trajectory equation. The cavitation nuclei are distributed and released in the vortex flow result. Vortex cavitation trajectories and radius variations are computed according to nuclei initial size. Noise is analyzed using time dependent cavitation bubble position and radius data. This study may lay the foundation for future work on vortex cavitation study and it will provide a basis for proper underwater propeller noise control strategies.
LDV measurements in large cavitation tunnel around a propeller in operation are carried out to provide valuable information for more accurate wake-adapted propeller design and to study hull-propeller interactions. Effective velocities are computed by both the simplified vortex ring method and by RANS solver with the body force representing the propeller load. The former method uses the nominal velocities measured at the propeller plane as an input data of the numerical method and shows a better agreement with experimental data. The latter shows the qualitative agreement and may be used as an alternative design tools in the preliminary design stage.

In this paper, cavitation patterns of model tests were compared with those of full-scale measurement for a propeller of crude oil carrier which was suffered from erosions on suction side of blade tip region. Cavitation tests were performed at design and ballast draft using model and full scale nominal wakes. A model ship and wire mesh method was used for the simulation of wake patterns of model nominal wakes. For the prediction of full-scale wake patterns, a RANS solver(Fluent 6.3) was used and wire mesh method was used for the simulation of the full scale wakes. Comparison results show that cavitation patterns using predicted full-scale wake patterns are closer to cavitation patterns of full-scale measurement at ballast draft condition. Also, cloud cavitations were observed on the position of eroded area at both full-scale measurement and cavitation tests using simulated full-scale wake patterns.
