  • In this paper, telemetry link budget model for small launch vehicle is proposed, and telemetry link budget simulator is implemented. The proposed link budget model consist of geometry model and propagation loss model. The geometry model is calculation of look angle between ground station and small launch vehicle. The propagation loss model consist of free space loss, polarization loss, and de-pointing loss which are appropriate to the small launch vehicle flight environment. The proposed propagation loss model can be calculate propagation loss without complex calculation of propagation environments. The link budget simulator is implemented in MATLAB. The simulator calculate look angle, free space loss, polarization loss parameter, de-pointing loss and received signal level in ground station by using position of ground station, routing of small launch vehicle, 3-D radiation patterns of antennas.

  • Train radio system has been constructed in the second stage of Kyung-bu high speed railway adopting TETRA(Terrestial trunk radio) standard at 851MHz frequency band. The base stations of the train radio system should be located along railway track to ensure seamless communication between train and wayside taking the path loss of train radio propagation into consideration. This paper provides a quantitative analysis of the path loss characteristics based on the measurement results of the train radio propagation along the high speed railway. The free space propagation model and Okumura-Hata model are generally used for base station design, but they predicted 10dB lower or 20dB higher than the measured path loss. Linear regression of the field measured data by applying the log-distance model shows path loss exponent is in the 2.8-3.2 range, which can be used to predict the path loss of the train radio propagation.

  • A numerical investigation on the flame propagation and extinction in a micro combustor is described. Previous measurements of $H_2-air$ flame propagation in a submilimeter scale combustor exhibited significance of wall effects on burning velocity and extinction. The heat transfer to wall becomes important not only in the cooling of burnt gases but also during the flame ropagation, which has be by and large ignored in macro scale combustor calculations. In order to take the heat loss into account the combustion calculation, we developed a numerical code with a heat transfer model that was determined empirically from measured data. PISO algorithm was used for differencing of conservation equations. $H_2-air$ reaction was modeled with 10 species - 16 steps. Comparison with measured data showed good agreement in flame propagation speed. Also the pressure decrease after flame extinction was accurately predicted by the model. A further study is desirable for a better quenching model that can predict the quenching location.

Abstract In cellular mobile communication systems, wave propagation models are used in most cases to predict cell coverage. The amount of propagation loss induced by the obstacles in the propagation path, however, is a highly non-linear function, which cannot be easily represented mathematically. In this paper, we introduce the method of producing propagation loss prediction models by function approximation using neural networks. In this method, we assume the propagation loss is a function of the relevant parameters such as the distance from the base station antenna, the specification of the transmitter antenna, obstacle profile, diffraction effect, road, and water effect. The values of these parameters are produced from the field measurement data, 3D digital terrain maps, and vector maps as its inputs by a feature extraction process, which takes into account the physical characteristics of electromagnetic waves such as reflection, diffraction and scattering. The values produced are used as the input to the neural network, which are then trained to become the propagation loss prediction model. In the experimental study, we obtain a considerable amount of improvement over COST-231 model in the prediction accuracy using this model.

  • Sound propagation in shallow water changes from spherical spreading to cylindrical spreading, depending on boundary conditions, and this point is defined as a transition point of the sound propagation condition. Theoretically, the transition point can be estimated using the transmission loss as a function of source-receiver range. In this paper, the transmission loss curve in a Pekeris waveguide is predicted using a parabolic-equation based acoustic propagation model and using this transmission loss curve, the range from the source of the transition point is estimated, which is compared to the critical distance calculated using the sound speed ratio of water to sediment. In addition, the effects of the sound speed profile and source depth change on the transition point are investigated. Finally, the transition point is estimated using the transmission loss data measured during the period of the SAVEX15 (Shallow Water Acoustic Variability EXperiment 2015) conducted 65 km southwest of Jeju Island in May 2015, and it is compared to the ocean environmental parameters to understand the properties of sound propagation in the experimental area.

  • In this paper, we have developed a propagation loss prediction software with GUI (Graphic User Interface) functions, based on the geometrical ray optics model, which can predict radio parameters for the deployment of wireless indoor network. The program has two numerical modules consisted with electrical image and ray launching methods to implement UTD theory. The simulated results are compared with reported data measured in the foreign building environments for office and '一' type corridor, and measured and simulated results for the propagation loss agree with each other quite well. Simulation results for '一' type corridor and 'T' type corridor propagation environment are shown for reference.

  • We have fabricated a polymeric waveguide by using a hot embossing technique and have investigated its propagation loss. The replication of waveguide channels through the use of a hot embossing technique is of interest as a single-step process that could deliver surface roughnesses far smaller than the wavelength. We have evaluated experimentally that the sidewall roughness has a dominant effect on insertion losses of the multimode polymeric waveguide. The propagation loss of the waveguide decreased dramatically upon decreasing the sidewall roughness of the channel. We have confirmed that the preparation of waveguides having nanometer-scale sidewall roughness and 0.1 dB/cm propagation loss is possible when using the hot embossing technique.

  • The optical near-field patterns, propagation loss and mode sizes of x-cut $Ti:LiNbO_3$ optical waveguide which was fabricated by Ti-diffusion varying with Ti strip thickness in wet oxygen atmosphere were discussed at optical wavelength 1550nm. As Ti thickness increased from $760{\AA}$, the insertion loss of waveguide was decreased. But at Ti thickness $1500{\AA}$, mode sizes are widely broadened. The Ti thickness of below $1100{\AA}$ and above $1500{\AA}$ showed negative effects to propagation loss and fiber coupling. The best Ti thickness for fabricating low propagation loss and good fiber coupling was inferred to be between $1100{\AA}-1500{\AA}$ in our conditions. And for Ti thickness $1150{\AA}$, its propagation loss, horizontal/vertical mode sizes were showed 1.61 dB/cm, $11.9/8.9{\mu}m$ for TM, 0.22 dB/cm, $12.0/9.1{\mu}m$ for TE respectively.

  • The received signal strengths according to the propagation distance between a transmitting shore station with a 53 m antenna hight and a receiving ship station with about 6m antenna hight from 700 m upto about 20 km are measured at ship's moving velocity of $5{\pm}1m/s$ using a single carrier signal at 150.0625MHz. In this paper, the path loss exponents at the propagation distance from 700 m to 20km are estimated via minimum-mean-square-error method using the measurements of the received signal strength, and the mean of the estimated path loss exponent become 3.79. The estimated propagation path loss exponents is similar to that calculated based on the field-strength values from 2 km to 20 km in Annex 2 of ITU-R P.1546-4, which is measuring results at maritime VHF at 100 MHz carrier frequency. Therefore, the estimated propagation path loss exponent shall be used as the expected path loss exponents for summer in costal area of South Sea of Korea.
