  • A new model for the propagation prediction for mobile communication network inside building is presented in this paper. The model is based on the determination of the dominant paths between the transmitter and the receiver. The field strength is predicted with adaptive neuro - fuzzy inference systems (ANFIS), trained with measurements. The advantage of the ANFIS with hybrid least squares and gradient descent algorithms is fast convergence compared with original neural network. The K-means algorithm for selection of training patterns is also used. Comparison of our predicted results to measurements indicate that improvements in accuracy over conventional empirical model are achieved.

  • This paper briefly introduces efforts into space debris modeling towards a better understanding of space debris environment. Space debris modeling mainly consists of debris generation and orbit propagation. Debris generation can characterize and predict physical properties of fragments originating from explosions or collisions. Orbit propagation can characterize, track, and predict the behavior of individual or groups of space objects. Therefore, space debris modeling can build evolutionary models as essential tools to predict the stability of the future space debris populations. Space debris modeling is also useful and effective to improve the efficiency of measurements to be aware of the present environment.

  • The sensitivity factors and the error propagation factors are defined for the three-parameter ellipsometry (TPE). The sensitivity factor is useful for understanding the nature of the TPE measurements in connection with determination of the optical properties and the thickness of a film. On the other hand, the error propagation factors provide a quantitative tool for predicting the optimum condition for TPE experiments. Their usefulness is demonstrated for the passive film formed on nickel in aqueous solution.

  • Propagation speeds of turbulent premixed flames have been measured in a pulsed-flame flow reactor which generates flames propagating in nearly isotropic turbulent flow field with U'/$S_L$ ranging from 1.2 to 5.3. The measurement involved a high-speed digital imaging at 1000 frames/second to capture the flame propagation motion. In addition to the flame speed measurements, flame perimeter ratio was measured for comparison. The observed flame propagation speed is high ranging from 5 to 20 times the laminar flame speed for the range of U'/$S_L$. The flames observed at extreme equivalence ratios exhibit intermittent propagation in that only a small fraction of ignited flame kernel resulted in full propagation of the flame. Also, at low equivalence ratios the flame speed decreased substantially even at high turbulence intensities.

  • Using the CT specimen of carbon steel(SM45C), we estimated the fatigue crack propagation behavior in stable crack propagation range. Furthermore the fatigue crack propagation rate, Acoustic Emission(AE) count rate, and fractography characteristics were also compared among others. The following results were confirmed by experimental observation. Near-threshold stress intensity factor range(.DELTA. $K_{th}$) is influenced by stress ratio but not at the upper limit of stable crack propagation range. As stress intensity factor range(.DELTA.K) and(or) stress amplitude increase (s), both crack propagation rate(da/dN) and AE count rate(dn/dN) increase. Effective stress intensity factor range(.DELTA. $K_{off}$) determined from the crack closure point measurement by AE method is useful for the evaluation of fatigue crack propagation rate. Fractography in stable crack propagation range showed striation, and agreed with the crack propagation rate obtained either by experiment of by the results of microscopic measurements.s.

  • Many researches on the GNSS integer ambiguity resolution methods for precise positioning and attitude determination applications have been done. However, by the time invariant property of the integer ambiguity, the reuse of integer ambiguity without performing time consuming integer search procedure is possible. In this paper, a new efficient integer ambiguity propagation method is proposed. The initial integer ambiguity can be determined using the famous LAMBDA method and it is propagated with the propagation method. The proposed method can reconfigure the integer ambiguity using the previous epoch's integer ambiguity and new carrier phase measurements under environmental variations such as geometry changes, signal blockage and reacquisition. Experiments with real measurements show the proposed method can determine an integer ambiguity effectively.

  • Alternative radio-navigation technologies aim at providing continuous navigation solution even if one cannot use GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System). In shadowing region such as indoor environment, GNSS signal is no longer available and the alternative navigation system should be used together with GNSS to provide seamless positioning. For soldiers in battlefield where GNSS signal is jammed or in street battle, the alternative navigation system should work without positioning infrastructure. Moreover, the radio-navigation system should have scalability as well as high accuracy performance. This paper presents a TWR (Two-Way-Ranging)-based cooperative positioning system (CPS) that does not require location infrastructure. It is assumed that some members of CPS can obtain GNSS-based position and they are called mobile anchors. Other members unable to receive GNSS signal compute their position using TWR measurements with mobile anchors and neighboring members. Error propagation in CPS is analytically studied in this paper. Error budget for TWR measurements is modeled first. Next, location error propagation in CPS is derived in terms of range errors. To represent the location error propagation in the CPS, Location Error Propagation Indicator (LEPI) is proposed in this paper. Simulation results show that location error of tags in CPS is mainly influenced by the number of hops from anchors to the tag to be positioned as well as the network geometry of CPS.

  • A numerical investigation on the flame propagation and extinction in a micro combustor is described. Previous measurements of $H_2-air$ flame propagation in a submilimeter scale combustor exhibited significance of wall effects on burning velocity and extinction. The heat transfer to wall becomes important not only in the cooling of burnt gases but also during the flame ropagation, which has be by and large ignored in macro scale combustor calculations. In order to take the heat loss into account the combustion calculation, we developed a numerical code with a heat transfer model that was determined empirically from measured data. PISO algorithm was used for differencing of conservation equations. $H_2-air$ reaction was modeled with 10 species - 16 steps. Comparison with measured data showed good agreement in flame propagation speed. Also the pressure decrease after flame extinction was accurately predicted by the model. A further study is desirable for a better quenching model that can predict the quenching location.

  • In this paper, propagation characteristics are analyzed under the Korean propagation condition based on the measurements for Ka-band beacon signal of COMET satellite which moves in non-geostationary orbit. Radio propagation characteristics varying as time, range, and elevation angle are presented also. As results, it is concluded that free space loss is a major parameter to the radio propagation characteristics varying as a range in clear sky. In addition, the effect of elevation angle is negligible because COMETS is observed above 40 degree.

  • In this paper, the method for dielectric constant and less tangent measurements of microwave substrates using a microstrip line is presented. The two samples of an open-ended line and a short-ended tine are made and complex propagation constant is evaluated from the one-port scattering parameter measurements. This method has been automated fully using a personal computer and a vector network analyzer.
