  • The main purpose of this study was to investigate preschoolers understanding whether thinking influences emotion with cognitive cueing. The subjects were 75 preschoolers of the J, Y, & K kindergartens located in Taegu. They were 4-(12 boys and 13 girls), 5-(12 boy and 13 girls), and 6-years(13 boys and 12 girls) old. The instruments were 4 stories and 11 pictures per a story used in Lagattuta, Wellman & Flavell(1997). The responses given from preschoolers were classified in terms of cognitive cueing response. The major results showed that an initial understanding of cognitive cueing in some preschoolers revealed the evidence of significantly developmental changes during the preschool years. Cognitive cueing responses were significantly different according to thinking prompt which is the question to help preschoolers explanations. This result suggested that the instruments of measurement for preschoolers should be improved as possible as they can understand.

  • Immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI)-associated adrenal insufficiency is rare but may become a serious adverse event in patients treated with ICIs. The present case report documents two cases of adrenal insufficiency developed during chemotherapy plus tislelizumab (百泽安, Baize'an; BeiGene Ltd.) therapy in patients with advanced gastric cancer. Adrenal insufficiency developed after 6 and 13 cycles of treatment and was well controlled with hydrocortisone. The patients also developed hypothyroidism, which was managed with levothyroxine. Two patients showed a partial response, and one patient out of two achieved a near-complete response, sustaining over 11 months. Increased awareness of ICI-related adrenal insufficiency is crucial for early detection and prompt management of patients treated with ICIs.

  • In this research, in order to more concretely define the concept of the previously vaguely defined fire road, the authors propose new terminology called disaster prevention routes. These are defined as predefined access routes for the quick response to disaster areas. For this, the authors suggest selection techniques for disaster prevention routes considering characteristics of fire trucks and selected areas. The paper also includes legally-based ideas for the executive departments with exclusive responsibility for continuous management and supervision of disaster response. In addition, a case study is performed with a virtual scenario including the outbreak of fire in one borough of Seoul. This case study shows that the damage can be decreased by prompt access of fire trucks. The establishment of predefined access routes to disaster areas can help to protect citizens with more rapid response by emergency crews. Indirect benefits also include reduced congestion of roads through the prohibition of parking and stopping on the chosen roads.

  • After an earthquake, a quick seismic assessment of a structure can facilitate the recovery of operations, and consequently, improve structural resilience. Especially for facilities that play a key role in rescue or refuge efforts (e.g., hospitals and power facilities), or even economically important facilities (e.g., high-tech factories and financial centers), immediately resuming operations after disruptions resulting from an earthquake is critical. Therefore, this study proposes a prompt post-earthquake seismic evaluation method that uses displacement and acceleration measurements taken from real structural responses that resulted during an earthquake. With a prepared pre-earthquake capacity curve of a structure, the residual seismic capacity can be estimated using the residual roof drift ratio and stiffness. The proposed method was verified using a 6-story steel frame structure on a shaking table. The structure was damaged during a moderate earthquake, after which it collapsed completely during a severe earthquake. According to the experimental results, a reasonable estimation of the residual seismic capacity of structures can be performed using the proposed post-earthquake seismic evaluation method.

  • Objectives: Food safety has become one of the major public-concerning issues in Korea. In order to set guidelines to create manuals for the response to a food safety crisis by food industry, this paper classified food safety crises and suggested techniques to determine crisis level. Methods: This study clarified common terminologies and definitions including in food safety crises. It reviewed various food safety crises and described characteristics, types, and states of crises. Results: The results of this study suggested that a food safety crisis implied a situation in which hazards/risk spreading in the food supply chain was widely described, causing strong public concern followed by a socioeconomic impact, and therefore, requiring the implementation of a prompt and full response regarding the situation. In terms of seeking response plans, food safety crises might be classified according to the penalties resulting from violations of laws and regulations, causative substances, stages of the food supply chain, and first contact point for incidents. The crisis level for a food safety crisis could be classified according to its severity parameters. The guideline matrix was divided into four major stages: Blue/guarded, Yellow/elevated, Orange/high, and Red/severe. This study also suggested several methods for determining the crisis level, such as the simple judgement method, scoring methods using a check-list and a weighted check-list. Conclusion: The severity of related parameters might be of great importance in understanding a crisis and determining response options/challenges for crisis levels.

  • Atelectasis may be defined as collapse of the lung due to absence of air within the alveoli. It may involve anatomic segments, lobes, or whole lungs but also may be a diffuse miliary process, as in the adult respiratory distress syndrome. The key to treatment are the anticipation and prevention of atelectasis in various clinical situations, the recognition and treatment of underlying disease, and the prompt initiation of vigorous treatment once atelectasis is found. Repeated assessment by physical examination is necessary to determine the presence of atelectasis and its response to treatment. During the period of January, 1981 to October, 1990, 100 patients with atelectasis were treated in the department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Pusan National University Hospital. There were 70 males and 30 females ranging from 3 days to 79 years of age. The occurrence ratio of right to left side was 2.1 : 1. The underlying pathologic lesions of atelectasis were pneumonia with effusion(28), lung ca.(24), pulmonary tuberculosis(24), and chronic empyema(9), The treatment procedure for atelectasis were closed thoracostomy in 26 cases, ressection in 21 cases, therapeutic bronchoscopy in 14 cases and etc.

  • A natural language processing system usually has the demerit that its processing time is relatively long. If an interactive system makes its user kept waiting long, it can't be said to be practical. In this paper, the on-line natural language parser in which its processing coincides with the sentence's inputting is designed. Since the greater part of morpholgical and syntatic semantic analysis is already performed during the keyboard input, user can get a prompt response. Moreover, the Korean parser is implemented in multitasking environment, and it is compared with an off-line parser. The on-line parser can be considered to be efficient for its real time processing.

  • A 77-year-old male patient was admitted to the hospital with acute appendicitis and underwent emergency appendectomy under inhalation anesthesia without any complications. After the operation, the patient was placed on epidural analgesia with the mixture of fentanyl-bupivacaine and scopolamine patch for nausea and vomiting. The patient experienced central anticholinergic syndrome (CAS) with hallucination, confusion, somnolence, dysarthria and delirium at 20 hours after patch placement and recovered from all symptoms of CAS in 24 hours after the removal of the patch. The CAS occurs when central cholinergic sites are occupied by specific drugs and also as a result of an insufficient release of acetylcholine. The diagnosis of CAS is often determined by a process of exclusion and not actually made until a positive therapeutic response to physostigmine, a centrally active anticholiesterase agent, has taken place. Treatment of CAS includes prompt removal of the patch, cleansing of the area, and physostigmine administration. The scopolamine patch should be used with extreme caution in elderly patient.

  • Various technologies for the reduction of atmospheric pollution have been developed. One of which is to inject fine-water droplets directly on the flame. This way decreases the formation of thermal NOx due to the temperature drop during evaporation of droplets. There is another effect of reducing prompt NOx, which is resulted from delay of response time and the flow of droplets. In this experiment, it has been investigated the effects of changes of water droplets size and flow rate on temperature and formations of NOx at the counterflow diffusion flame.

  • Antisynthetase syndrome has been recognized as an important cause of autoimmune inflammatory myopathy in a subset of patients with polymyositis and dermatomyositis. It is associated with serum antibody to aminoacyl-transfer RNA synthetases and is characterized by a constellation of manifestations, including fever, myositis, interstitial lung disease, mechanic's hand-like cutaneous involvement, Raynaud phenomenon, and polyarthritis. Lung disease is the presenting feature in 50% of the cases. We report a case of a 60-year-old female with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), which later proved to be an unexpected and initial manifestation of anti-Jo-1 antibody-positive antisynthetase syndrome. The present case showed resolution of ARDS after treatment with high-dose corticosteroids. Given that steroids are not greatly beneficial in the treatment of ARDS, it is likely that the improvement of the respiratory symptoms in this patient also resulted from the prompt suppression of the inflammatory systemic response by corticosteroids.
