  • Turbo codes of long block sizes have been known to show very good performance in an AWGN channel and the turbo code has been strongly recommended as error correction code for IMT-2000 in 3GPP(3$^{rd}$ Ceneration Partnership Project). Recently, turbo codes of short block sizes suitable for real time communication systems have attracted a lot of attention. Thus in this paper we consider the turbo code of 1/3 code rate and short frame size of 192 bits in ITU-R channel model. We analyzed the performance of W-CDMA systems of 10MHz bandwidths employing RAKE receiver with not only MRC diversity but also turbo code..

  • A GDHS(Geothermal District Heating System) is a heating system supplying a group of districts with heat extracted from geothermal sources. The advantages of GDHS include saving fuel consumption as well as reducing air pollution. This paper presents a case study for the economic feasibility model and analysis of a GDHS with which central/individual heating systems are replaced. Configuring to a simplified GDHS which consisits of subsurface systems, surface systems, and transmission/distribution systems, we find out the properties of the system and the model parameters affecting the initial investment/operating costs in order to develop a classical economic feasibility model given geothermal temperature. Based on our model parameter space, we analyzed the geothermal development project of the Jejoo Island probabilistically given prior information such as the expected geothermal power, the demand size and the length of transmission/distribution pipes.

  • The morphometry and distribution of the unarmoured dinoflagellates Brachidinium capitatum F.J.R. Taylor, Asterodinium gracile Sournia, Microceratium orstomii Sournia and the toxic species Karenia papilionacea Haywood et Steidinger have been investigated in open waters of the SE Pacific Ocean. The genus Microceratium Sournia is recorded for the first time since the initial description. These taxa showed a high morphological similarity and they may correspond to life stages of a highly versatile single species that is able to project body extensions. Karenia papilionacea showed the higher abundance in the surface waters of the more productive areas (the Marquesas Archipelago and the Perú-Chile Current). Brachidinium capitatum and K. papilionacea often co-occurred, predominating B. capitatum in offshore surface waters. Asterodinium gracile was recorded at the bottom of the euphotic zone (down to 210 m depth), with a shallower distribution in more productive areas. Intermediate specimens of Asterodinium-Brachidinium-Karenia, with variable disposition and size of the body extensions were illustrated.

  • In this paper, we proposed automatic searching algorithm of thresholding value using multilevel thresholding for face segmentation from input bust image effectively. The proposed algorithm extracted the thresholding value of brightness that is formed background region, face region and hair region without illumination, background and face size from input image. The statistical projection analysis project the brightness of multilevel thresholding image into horizontal and vertical direction and decide the thresholding value of face. And the algorithm extracted elliptical type block of face from input image in order to reduce the back ground region and hair region efficiently. The proposed algorithm can reduce searching area of feature extraction and processing time for face recognication.

  • For the past years, there had been some environmental cooperation among East Asian countries to reduce air pollution emissions from China. However, the progress of cooperation has been under developed because of lacking financial support, poor design of planning, and weak economic incentives for the industries. In this paper, some practical approaches have been suggested. First, electric trade to make Asian Grid among countries will be good alternatives for the fossil fuel, such as coal, for China. Secondly, natural gas pipeline from West China to Siberian pipeline would change the whole energy mix in this area around 2010, Therefore, it is very promising area for the energy industries to involve in gas project and get rid of many institutional barriers from China. Lastly, environmental industry is growing fast in East Asian. In China, waste treatment and management, air pollution control, and water quality management are some promising areas for the future. Hence it is desirable for Korea, Japan and China to make a eco-fund or company to boost up environmental technology as well as environmental market size.

  • The rapid development of airlines, has made airports busier and more complicated. The assignment of scheduled to available gates is a major issue for daily airline operations. We consider the over-constrained airport gate assignment problem(AGAP) where the number of flights exceeds the number of available gates, and where the objectives are to minimize the number of ungated flights and the total walking distance or connection times. The procedures used in this project are to create a mathematical model formulation to identify decision variables to identify, constraints and objective functions. In addition, we will consider in the AGAP the size of each gate in the terminal and also the towing process for the aircraft. We will use a greedy algorithm to solve the problem. The greedy algorithm minimizes ungated flights while providing initial feasible solutions that allow flexibility in seeking good solutions, especially in case when flight schedules are dense in time. Experiments conducts give good results.

  • In this work, the oxidation-induced characteristics of five nuclear graphites (NBG-17, NBG-18, NBG-25, IG-110, and IG-430) were studied. The oxidation characteristics of nuclear graphites were measured at the three temperature areas (300, 600, and $900^{\circ}C$). As experimental results, the pore size of oxidized graphite was increased with increasing of oxidation time. It was also found that the oxdation rate was propotional to the oxidation temperature and time. This was probably due to the oxidation was occurred on the surface and inner bulk phase of nuclear graphites at the same time by the socalled chemical regime.

  • The purpose of this study, by surveying the status of firms, measurement-related investment and the defect rate, is to analyze the effect of measurement-related investment and to propose a scheme of efficient measurement-related investment which reduces the defect rate. For this project we obtain the data of the status of the measurement-related investment and the defect rate of 928 firms in Korean manufacturing industry by mailing survey. One of our results shows that the firms which have measurement standard laboratory, i.e, which invest in measurement-related area comparatively high, have the defect rate about 0.8% lower than those firms which don't have measurement standard laboratory. Also we find that the small-and-middle size firms have worse measurement-related facility than the large firms and the firms in the heavy-chemical industry have higher measurement-related investment effect than the firms in the light industry.

  • The Seongdeok Divine Bell(nicknamed "Emile Bell") represents the bell of the Silla dynasty. However, ringing it was stopped since 2003 for the safety of the bell. Currently, Kyungju city is performing a project casting a new great bell(tentatively named "Great Bell of Silla") that inherits the beautiful appearance and the sound of the Seongdeok Divine Bell in order to ring a new coming millenium. The new bell is designed to be almost same as the Seongdeok Divine Bell in terms of size, weight and shape as well as its sound. In this study, we investigate the problems occurring in the design of the bell structure and propose the design strategy for the reconstruction of the traditional large bells.

  • Propriety of PERT network for planning and management in large-scale systems was investigated. We also review the example of small and middle size system to compare the appropriateness of PERT analysis method. For comparing the appropriateness of PERT analysis method the calculation time, and the variances were estimated. Eventualy, we proposed the criteria of PERT analysis method for planning and management large-scale systems.
