Purpose: This study was undertaken to compare the signal characteristics of surface electromyography (EMG) between progressive resistive increase exercise (PRIE) and progressive resistive decrease exercise (PRDE). Methods: Forty healthy male subjects were randomly assigned to either the PRIE group or the PRDE group. Subjects participated in the PRIE and PRDE methods, with 10 RM for each subject. EMG activity was recorded from the rectus femoris muscle. Outcome data were collected for both groups pre-exercise, immediately post-exercise, then at 5 and 10 minutes post-exercise. Repeated measures 2-way ANOVA was used to determine the statistical difference of the root mean square (RMS) in EMG activity. Results: We showed that RMS values, when compared with pre-exercise, were decreased immediately after exercise and were increased at 5 and 10 minutes after exercise (p<0.05). The RMS values were not significantly different between the two groups (p>0.05). Conclusion: These results can indicate that both the PRIE and PRDE protocols will be improve strength with equivalent efficacy. Further studies are needed to address exercise duration, frequency of exercise sessions, and rest times than the PRIE and PRDE protocols with regard to the changes in strength improvement without a large amount of muscle fatigue.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a progressive exercise program for osteoarthritis patients. Methods: This study was performed from 24th March. to 7th July. 2009. Thirty six osteoarthritis patients were participated in the progressive exercise program. Outcome measures were shoulder flexibility, knee flexibility, grip strength, pain intensity, number of pain site and fatigue. SPSS/WIN Version 14.0 was used for the data analysis. Results: At the completion of 6 weeks of progressive exercise program, there were statistically significant differences in shoulder flexibility and knee flexibility. But no significant differences were found in grip strength, pain, number of pain site and fatigue between pretest and posttest. Conclusion: Progressive exercise program was proved to be an effective nursing intervention for improving the shoulder and knee flexibility. However, progressive exercise program did not increase pain & fatigue.
For the purpose of disclosing the effects of progressive low intensity exercise on the activity of the elderly, questionnaire survey and physical fitness examination were performed on the subjects who were 65 years old or older. The subjects were assigned into two groups using paired matching on gender and age: experimental group (33 persons) and control groups (35 persons). The subjects in experimental group was put on the low intensity exercise program (exercising upper and lower limbs for 12 weeks using dumbbell and lead-packed weight). The results showed that the difference of physical and social behavior scores among activities before and after exercise were significantly higher in all variables of general characteristics, health habits and status, perception, and physical fitness. The findings of this research suggested that the progressive low intensity exercise improves the activities of the elderly, physical activity, self assessed activity, activities of daily living, instrumental activities of daily living, social behavior of the elderly be affected by general characteristics, health habits and status, perception, and physical fitness.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a progressive lower-extremity exercise program on pain, efficacy of exercise, and the life satisfaction among older women with TKRA. Methods: This study was a nonequivalent control group non synchronized design and was conducted from 12 September 2012 to 05 February 2014 in G-university hospital located in J-city. The sample was composed of an experimental group (n=20) and a control group (n=20). The progressive lower extremity exercise program was applied to the experimental group for 13 days. NRS scale was used to measure the pain, self-efficacy of exercise was measured by Exercise Self Efficacy, and life satisfaction was measured by 8 item questionnaire. Results: The experimental group was significantly lower in the degree of pain (F=73.53, p<.001), higher in the degree of self-efficacy of exercise (F=61.42, p<.001) and life satisfaction (F=80.91, p<.001) than the control group. Conclusion: The progressive lower-extremity exercise program for TKRA patients was useful to reduce pain and improve self-efficacy of exercise and life satisfaction, To reduce the pain and th improve the life satisfaction of older women with TKRA, we need to provide the progressive exercise at bedside during the postoperative recovery phase.
This study aimed to assess the effects of progressive lumbar stability exercises and lumbar stability exercises on changes in the transversus abdominis muscle thickness and lower extremity muscle fatigue index in soccer players. Ten subjects were assigned to undergo training in each of the 2 groups, namely, the progressive lumbar stability exercise group and lumbar stability exercise group. Each intervention session lasted for 30 min, and 4 sessions were conducted in a week for 6 weeks for soccer players of S. University in Jeonnam, Korea. Changes in the transversus abdominis muscle thickness and lower extremity muscle fatigue index were measured using ultrasound and surface electromyogram. The results of the ultrasound measurement for the transversus abdominis muscle thickness indicated that progressive lumbar stability exercises were more effective than lumbar stability exercises. The results of the lower extremity muscle fatigue index measurements using surface electromyogram indicated that the fatigue index decreased in the progressive lumbar stability exercise group. Progressive lumbar stability exercise is believed to have put more workload during the shaking of the limbs, leading to increased stability and increased efficiency of the lower extremity muscle, thereby decreasing the fatigue index. Therefore, progressive lumbar stability exercises can be an effective measure for preventing injuries and improving the game performance of sports players by increasing the transversus abdominis muscle thickness and decreasing the lower extremity muscle fatigue index.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a progressive exercise program based on clinical guidelines for exercise prescription for older adults with osteoarthritis, which was planned to improve the existing arthritis self-help program. Method: We analyzed the contents of the arthritis self-help program and closely reviewed the guideline of exercise prescription for elderly with osteoarthritis. Results: The major contents of the revised arthritis self-help program are as follows: 1) The weekly education is composed of one-hour exercise and one-hour health education about various subjects. 2) The weekly main exercise is composed of muscle strengthening and endurance exercise. 3) Endurance exercise consists of three steps. 4) Muscle strengthening exercise is performed by gravity at first, and then the Thera-Band muscle strengthening exercise is followed on the 4th week. Conclusion: It is necessary to verify the effect of the progressive exercise program for older adults with osteoarthritis. It is thought that this revised program could be adopted as a rehabilitation program for older adults with osteoarthritis.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of Progressive Resistive Exercise Program and Aqua Exercise Program on Lower extremity Muscle strength, Balance in Elderly old. The average age of elder female was 71.65 years. Subjects of the study were twenty older women living in daejon. The date were analyzed with frequency, independent t-test, paired t-test using SPSS PC(ver.10.0). The subjects were practiced with focusing on the Progressive Resistive Exercise Program and Aqua Exercise Program for 8 weeks, from 8, April 2002 to 1, June 2002. The results of this study were as follows: 1. After the Progressive Resistive Exercise Program, Balance ability by OLSTR, OLSTL was improved(p<0.05) on the soft surface with close eyes. 2. After the Aqua Exercise Program, the strength of the right knee flexors and extensors was improved(p<0.05). 3. After the Aqua Exercise Program, the strength of the left knee flexors was improved(p<0.01). 4. After the Aqua Exercise Program, Balance ability by OLSTR was improved(p<0.001) on the soft surface with open eyes, close eyes and by OLSTL was improved(p<0.05) on the hard surface with open eyes.
The purpose of this study was to analyse the EMG activity of selected muscles with balance taping treatment and blood fatigue makers which accumulated during exercise of progressive maximal intensity. Ten male college students who did not experience any cardiovascular and musculo-skeletal disease were participated in this study. Balance taping were applied to rectus femoris, vastus medialis, vastus lateralis, biceps femoris, semitendinous, semimembranous, and around knee joint. Isokinetic knee joint flexion/extension force, EMG activity, lactate and ammonia as blood fatigue makers during progressive maximal intensity exercise were measured for with/without applying balance taping. The results indicated that although flexion force of total work at $60^{\circ}/sec$ with taping was increased applied taping did not affect to the aerobic exercise ability parameters. Lactate level as blood fatigue makers during progressive maximal intensity exercise after taping was decreased but the ammonia level did not change with same treatment. In isokinetic knee joint test at the angular velocity of $60^{\circ}/sec$, $180^{\circ}/sec$, and $240^{\circ}/sec$ the taping treatment did not affect to any selected muscle EMG activities except maximal EMG of vastus lateralis at $240^{\circ}/sec$.
Purpose: This study was conducted in order to determine the physical effect on grip strength and balance ability of progressive resistance training using an elastic band for middle elderly women. Methods: We randomly recruited 13 middle elderly female subjects (from 75 years old to 84 years old). They practiced the elastic band exercise for 50 minutes once every week and were instructed to perform the same exercise as a home exercise for 16 weeks. Subjects who participated voluntarily had not participated in any other exercise program. Grip strength, one leg stance, and TIme Up & Go Test (TUG) were measured before and after elastic band exercise using the one group pre-posttest design. Wilcoxon's signed ranks test and simple regression analysis were performed using SPSS 18.0. Results: Significant differences in TUG and grip strength test scores were observed pre and post exercise (p<0.05), except one leg stance test. Significant correlation was observed only between age and change of right one leg stance. Conclusion: Progressive resistance training using an elastic band for middle elderly women was effective for dynamic balance and grip strength, but was not effective for static balance. Therefore, investigation of factors that affect improvement of static balance using an elastic band and the lasting duration of the effect and its association with age will be necessary in the future.
Purpose : This study was to investigate the effectiveness of ESWT and plantar fascia-specific stretching exercise vs ESWT and high-load strengthening exercise in patients with chronic plantar fasciitis. Methods : The subjects were randomized to extracorporeal shock wave therapy ( ESWT, for 3 weeks) and daily plantar-specific stretching (Group I: Stretch group) or ESWT and high-load progressive strength (Group II: Strength group) performed every second day. The main outcome measures were ultrasound, visual analogue scale (VAS), and Korean Foot Function Index (KFFI). The ultrasound (plantar fascia thickness), pain intensity I, II (the most painful of the day?, the pain when you first step in the morning?) and KFFI (functional performance) were compared between the groups. Results : No significant difference was observed between the groups in the plantar fascia thickness but pain intensity I, II was significantly lower in Group 2 than in Group 1 at only 12weeks and functional performance was also significantly increased in Group 2 compared to Group 1 at only 12 weeks. Conclusion : The high-load strengthening exercise consisting of the progressive exercise protocol, resulted in superior after 12 weeks compared with plantar-specific stretching. High-load strength exercise may aid in a quicker reduction in pain and improvements in functional performance.
