  • Cone calorimeter measurements can be used for the calculation of effective material properties, which can be used as input parameters in modeling of fire. Main parameter measured in Cone calorimeter is heat release rate. Some other parameters as time to ignition, effective heat of combustion, mass loss rate or total heat released is also measured in Cone calorimeter. Total heat released is important from the point of view of total energy available in material in Fire situation. Cone calorimeter. measurements were done on several wood species (oak, beech, spruce, poplar). Measurements were provided at external irradiances 30, 50 and 65 ㎾/$m_2$ in horizontal orientation. Heat release rate data were evaluated and compared as a function of external irradiance for various species of wood. furthermore the influence of external irradiance on effective heat of combustion and total heat release was also evaluated for the period of flame combustion.

  • The refuse-derived fuel(RDF) is manufactured using waste plastics-based materials and its physical and chemical properties are analyzed. The manufacturing process consists of hand picking, primary magnetic separation, crushing, secondary magnetic separation, feeding and extrusion. The RDF products have a higher calorie content of over 6, 000 ㎉/kg and high stability because the waste plastics and paper are mainly selected. The combustion flue gas of RDF products is satisfied with the emission criteria of incinerator. The heavy metal concentration of combustion byproduct from the RDF boiler is also satisfied with the criteria and appears to be lower concentration than that of a common municipal waste incinerator.

  • The cone calorimeter as defined by ISO 5660, ASTM 1354, and NFPA 264A is used to assess the reaction to fire of almost any material that must be evaluated in the fire science field. Typical combustion gas analyses include oxygen, CO and CO2. Oxygen consumption is used to determine rate of heat release. Analysis of combustion gases other than oxygen, CO and CO2 has been attempted using filters to remove the solid smoke particles before analysis. This method has generated unreliable results due to the adsorption of many gas components on the active carbon . particles deposited on the filters. A technique using fourier Transform Infrared (FTIB) analysis without filtration will be disclosed and a discussion will be presented of the analytical results of toxic gases produced from various flame retarded polymeric materials. Use of such data in lethal toxic potency determinations is also reviewed.

  • In this study, oil palm biomass such as empty fruit bunch (EFB) and palm kernel shell (PKS) was used as raw materials for making pellets. Hardwood sawdusts were also mixed with EFB and PKS for making pellets. For improving a bad forming behavior in a pelletizer, 1 to 3 per cent of corn starch based on oven-dried weight biomass was added. The starch contributed to the decrease of dust generation in addition to the improvement of forming capability during pellet forming. Heating values of every pellets made of EFB and PKS were higher than 4,300 kcal/kg for the first grade pellet, irrespective of addition of sawdusts. However, the pellets made of EFB and PKS had ash contents over 3 per cent, which made it impossible to be applied for home use. Instead, they could be applied for industrial use. For studying their combustion characteristics, the pellets from the mixtures of EFB, PKS and sawdusts were analyzed using thermal gravimetric analyzer (TGA). From the TGA results, thermal decomposition of EFB and PKS occurred following three including endothermic reaction and dehydration, devolatilization of the major chemical components, and finally combustion of residual lignin and char.

  • In this study, a 3-dimensional numerical model, has been developed applied for the investigation of combustion characteristics, and used to optimize operating conditions in MSW incinerator, in Gwangju. The model developed in this study has been verified by exacting both the predicted and the measured temperature in combustion chamber which has been operated to provide a reference condition. By predictive results, the Sangmoo incinerator has a good characteristics of combustion and low emission however after burning zone produced incomplete products, also probably because the supply of primary air was not enough. Parametric screening studies have been conducted to study optimal operating conditions. For the optimal combustion characteristics, operating conditions should be adjusted with the waste properties.

  • Radiative heat transfer is very important in many combustion systems since they are operated in high temperature. Fluid flows in most of the combustion systems are turbulent to promote fast mixing of the hydrocarbon fuel and oxidant. Major combustion products are $CO_2$ and $H_2O$. The turbulent flow is modeled by using the standard ${\kappa}-{\epsilon}$ model and the radiation transfer is modeled by using the discrete ordinates method where the radiative gas properties are calculated by using the weighted sum of gray gases model with a gray gas regrouping(WSGGM-RG). Effect of the radiation on the combustion characteristics in a three-dimensional rectangular enclosure is studied by changing the equivalence ratio. Results show that the radiation plays a significant role on the heat transfer in the combustion systems by resulting in a temperature drop of 16% as compared to that obtained without radiation. The equivalence ratio also affects the combustion by different contribution of the radiative transfer with different gas compositions.

  • Recently, candles have been widely used to create a romantic atmosphere and to heat tea. In this study, a small combustion chamber for candle was designed using an 0.008 m3 bell jar. The emission factors of combustion products were then measured. The combustion chamber includes a glass dish, which prevents candle flame from affecting the composition of the gas emitted through the exhaust outlet. The outlet in the combustion chamber was designed as a cone shape, and it was lengthened to prevent flow from the outside, which could affect the homogeneous composition of the exhaust gas. The temperature at the outlet of the chamber was 34 ℃~41℃. The major combustion products of the candle, such as such aldehydes and acids, contained oxygen. The mass specific emission rates of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and TVOC were 0.04 μg/g, 0.01 μg/g, 0.02 μg/g, and 3.81, respectively. The mass specific emission rates of formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and benzaldehyde were 4.48 μg/g, 1.09 μg/g, and 0.67 μg/g, respectively. Considering the different compositions of the candle samples, their mass specific emission rates were similar to those obtained by using a large chamber 0.17 m3~50 m3 in size.

  • Oil-fired power plants usually use several burners and the combustion air is supplied to each burner through the complicated duct which is called windbox. A windbox should be designed to supply combustion air to each burner evenly but, due to the complicated duct shape, flow distribution in the windbox is unbalanced and uneven supplies of combustion air to each burner are induced by these unbalanced flow distribution in the windbox. These flow patterns tend to make flame unstable, increase the formation of pollutants and lower the overall combustion efficiency. To prevent these disadvantages, flow patterns in the windbox should be investigated for the uniform flow distribution. In this study, computational simulation method was used to investigate the flow distribution in the windbox and measured the velocities at the exit of burners in the real windbox to compare with CFD results. The results show two significant flow patterns. One is that the flow rates of each burner are different from each other and this means that all burners operate in different conditions of air to fuel ratio. The other is that the flow distribution at the exit of each burner is not axi-symmetric although the burner shape is axi-symmetric and this increases the pollutant products like CO.

  • A multi-step quasi-global mechanism is developed for the kerosene/oxygen combustion analysis including dissociation products. Reaction constants of the global reaction are determined to have agreement with experimental data. The mechanism is used for the numerical analysis of the combustion flow field of the kerosene/oxygen shear coaxial injector. The results from high-resolution numerical analysis confirmed qualitatively that the recess enhance the fuel/air mixing and combustion efficiency by the increased flow instabilities.
