  • Purpose: This study aims to examine how to review contents of experiential and utilitarian products (e.g., skincare products) and how to affect review helpfulness by applying natural language processing techniques. Research design, data, and methodology: This study uses 69,633 online reviews generated for the products registered at Amazon.com by 13 Korean cosmetic firms. The authors identify key topics that emerge about consumers' use of skincare products such as skin type and skin trouble, by applying bigram analysis. The review content variables are included in the review helpfulness model, including other important determinants. Results: The estimation results support the positive effect of review extremity and content on the helpfulness. In particular, the reviewer's skin type information was recognized as highly useful when presented together as a basis for high-rated reviews. Moreover, the content related to skin issues positively affects review helpfulness. Conclusions: The positive relationship between extreme reviews and helpfulness of reviews challenges the findings from prior literature. This result implies that an in-depth study of the effect of product types on review helpfulness is needed. Furthermore, a positive effect of review content on helpfulness suggests that applying big data analytics can provide meaningful customer insights in the online retail industry.

  • Recently, as growing number of consumers publish product and service reviews on the Internet, e-review has received attention from retailers and researchers. E-review, a form of electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) which is typically shared between strangers whose identity and credibility are unknown, has become an important product information source as social media has facilitated information exchanges between more consumers. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of e-review attributes on purchase intention for fashion products, which is mediated by trust of e-review, as well as to explore the differences between consumer communities and cooperative communities. A questionnaire was developed based on previous researches. Data were gathered from adults living in Busan. The results were analyzed by factor analysis, t-test, and regression using SPSS 18.0. The results showed that consumers tended to recognize e-reviews from consumer communities as exaggerated information, while they considered reviews from cooperative communities as reliable information, which gave the latter higher purchase intention. There were significant differences in e-review attributes for fashion products (e.g., Exaggeration, Entertainment, Innocence, and Agreement), purchase intention between consumer communities (e.g: Blog, Internet cafe) and cooperative communities (e.g: general malls and specialty malls). For both communities, purchase intention of fashion products was influenced by its entertainment attributes and perceived trust of e-reviews. These results suggest that e-retailers need to focus on understanding the causes of purchase intention with e-reviews for fashion products. Specifically, e-retailers should recognize that e-reviews of fashion products were associated primarily with entertaining and with consumers' trust. Based on these findings, managerial implications are presented.

  • Objectives: No study has been conducted to review characteristics of humidifier disinfectants (HD) products, such as real numbers, levels and types of HD substances contained, or the volume marketed. We aimed to review the characteristics of HD through a literature review. Methods: We collected literature reporting the names, numbers, and ingredients of HD and discussed them with a focus on the number of HD products and the chemicals used as a disinfectant. Results: A total of eight publications has reported the names of HD brands or types of disinfectants from 2011 to 2020. To date, a total of 40 HD products have been used, excluding four products. Eight HD products used polyhexamethylene guanidine phosphate (PHMG) and 14 used a mixture of chloromethylisothiazolinone (CMIT) and methylisothiazolinone (MIT) as disinfectants. Benzalkonium chloride (BKC) and sodium dichloroisocyanurate (NaDCC) were also used as a disinfectant in several HD products. A total of 19 HD products were associated with the development of HD associated lung injury (HDLI). The Oxy Saksak HD product containing PHMG showed the highest number of HD associated health effects. The type of disinfectant from a total of 14 HD products has not been identified. Conclusions: A total of 40 HD products have been marketed in South Korea since 1994. Further studies should be conducted to identify the association of product characteristics, including type of HD ingredients, with health effects.

  • Hotel consumers tend to rely on online reviews to reduce the risk to hotel products when they book hotel rooms because hotel products are high-risk products due to their intangibility. However, the development of ICT has caused information load, and it is an important issue to be perceived as useful information to consumer because a large amount of information complicates the decision making process of consumers. Drawn from Heuristic-Systematic Model(HSM), the present study explored the role of heuristic and systematic cues composing an online review influencing consumers' perception of hotel online reviews. More specifically, this study identified reviewers' identity, level of the reviewer, review star ratings, and attached hotel photo as heuristic cue, while review length, cognitive level of review and negativity in review as systematic cues. The binary logistic regression was adopted for analysis. This study found that only systematic cues of online review were found to affect the usefulness of it. Moreover, we preceded further study examining the moderating effect of seasonality in the relationships between systematic cues and usefulness.

  • As smartphone usage increases, the number of consumers who refer to review data of e-commercial products using web sites and SNS is also explosively multiplying. However, reading review data using traditional websites and SNS is time consuming. Also, it is impossible for consumers to read all the reviews. Therefore, a system that collects review data of products and conducts sentiment word analysis of the review is required to provide useful information. The majority of systems that provide such information inadequately reflect the properties of the product. In this study, we described a system that provides analysis and evaluation of e-commerce products through review sentiment words as reflected properties of the product. Furthermore, the system enables consumers to access processed information about reviews quickly and in visual format.

  • Urbanization is usually followed by changes in eating habits, with a specific trend toward the consumption of ready-to-eat products, such as processed foods. Among the latter, meat products are known contributors to high dietary sodium owing to salt addition. Salt plays an essential role in maintaining the quality of meat products in terms of acceptability and safety. However, an excessive salt intake is linked to high blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases. Hence, several studies have been competing for the discovery of salt alternatives performing in a similar way as common salt. A number of replacements have been proposed to reduce salt consumption in meat products while taking into account consumer preferences. Unfortunately, these have resulted in poorer product quality, followed by new adverse effects on health. This review addresses these recent issues by illustrating some established approaches and providing insight into further challenges in developing low-salt meat products.

  • The study analyzes reviews of hardware products, customer service products, and products that take the form of a convergence of hardware and cloud services in ICT using text mining. We derive keywords of each review and find the differentiation of words that are used to derive topics. A cluster analysis is performed to categorize reviews into their respective clusters. Through this study, we observed which keywords are most often used for each product type and found topics that express the characteristics of products and services using topic modeling. We derived keywords such as "professional" and "technician" which are topics that suggest the excellence of the service provider in the review of service products. Further, we identified adjectives with positive connotations such as "favorite", "fine", "fun", "nice", "smart", "unlimited", and "useful" from Amazon Eco review, an integrated product and service. Using the cluster analysis, the entire review was clustered into three groups, and three product type reviews exclusively resulted in belonging to each different cluster. The study analyzed the differences whereby consumer needs are expressed differently in reviews depending on the type of product and suggested that it is necessary to differentiate product planning and marketing promotion according to the product type in practice.

  • Purpose - This study investigates how review length and sentiment impact consumers' purchase intentions, using real online reviews as the data source. The study aims to understand how the length and tone of a review affect a potential buyer's decision-making process when considering a purchase. Design/methodology/approach - A 2 (comment length: long vs. short) × 2 (comment sentiment: positive vs. negative) × 2 (product type: practical vs. hedonic) experiment was conducted. Findings - Results indicate that longer reviews have a greater impact on consumers' perceived usefulness compared to short reviews, but do not affect purchase intentions. Review sentiment is found to have a stronger impact than review length, especially for negative sentiment. The study also suggests that consumers pay more attention to reviews of practical products, and that reviews have less influence on hedonic products. Research implications or Originality - The implications of these findings are relevant for both merchants managing reviews and consumers reviewing products. The results of this research could help businesses and marketers optimize their online review strategies to maximize their impact on consumer behavior.

  • Purpose - Online product review has become a crucial part of the online retailer's market performance for a wide range of products. This research aims to investigate how an individual reviewer's review frequency and timing affect her/his average attitude toward products. Research design, data, and methodology - To conduct reviewer-level analysis, this study uses 42,172 posted online review messages generated by 6,941 identified reviewers for 59 movies released in the South Korea from July 2015 to December 2015. This study adopts Tobit model specification to take into account the censored nature and the selection bias arising from the nature of J-shaped distribution of movie rating. Results - Our estimation results support that the negative impact of review frequency and timing on valence. Furthermore, review timing has an inverted-U relationship with the user's average valence and enhance the negative effect of review frequency. Conclusions - This study contributes to the growing literature on the understanding how eWOM is generated at the individual consumer level. On the basis of the main empirical findings, this study provides insights into building a recommendation system in online retail store based on the consumer's review history data - frequency, timing, and valence.
