  • Taguchi regarded the concept of quality as 'total loss to society due to fluctuations in quality characteristics from the time of supplied to the customer.' The loss function is a representative tool that can quantitatively convert the loss that occurs due to the deviation of the quality characteristic value from the target value. This has been utilized in various studies with the advantage that it can change the social loss caused by fluctuation of quality characteristics to economic cost. The loss function has also been used extensively in the study of producer specification limits. However, in previous studies, only the second order loss function of Taguchi is used. Therefore, various types of losses that can occur in the process can't be considered. In this study, we divide the types of losses that can occur in the process considering the first and second loss functions and the Spiring's reflected normal loss function, and perform total inspection before delivering the customer to determine the optimal producer specification limit that minimizes the total cost. Also, we will divide the quality policy for the products beyond the specification limits into two. In addition, we will show the illustration of expected loss cost change of each model according to the change of major condition such as customer specifications and maximum loss cost.

  • Process Capability ($C_{pk}$) is a representative measure of how well the producer manages dispersion and bias for the specifications needed by the consumer. This is expressed as a ratio of 6 times the natural tolerance to the specification. As the producer manages the dispersion small, the capacity index becomes higher. And it is classified into 5 grades according to the degree of management. It is a measure of the quality of processes used in most industrial fields. However, $C_{pk}$ is calculated by only reflecting the mean and dispersion of the process, there is a disadvantage that it can not give information about the economic loss caused by the inconsistency of the process with the target value. Overcoming these drawbacks, process capability indexes reflecting various types of loss functions such as $C_{pm}$, $C^+_{pm}$ and $C_{pl}$ have been developed. However, all of these previous studies have applied the limit to the consumer specification, which is based on the traditional and passive quality perception that the quality characteristic should exist within the limits of the consumer specification. In this study, we will develop 'Customer Satisfaction Quality Indicator (CSQI)' which is a quantitative indicator that can be fully evaluated when the manufacturer's specification limit, which is an aggressive quality strategy, is applied. This is expected to be useful decision information for both producers and consumers.

  • Objectives : Based on the entries on each medicinal's 'specification' and the phrase '所以然' in the Shennong Bencao Baizhonglu, this paper aims to examine Xu Dachun's understanding of herbal medicinals. Methods : One hundred medicinals from the text were sorted into eight categories: Qi, flavor, color, form, quality, nature and characteristic, time of growth, and producer, then examined. Results : 1. Medicinals related to Qi were aromatic and pungent and warm. 2. Medicinals related to flavor were explained according to the Five Flavors' nature in terms of the thing and its functions theory. 3. Medicinals related to color were explained in relation to the Five Colors, whose interpretations were rather erratic. 4. Medicinals related to form were explained as it being possible to figure out their effects based on each medicinal's shape and form. 5. Medicinals related to quality were those that were used to manage dryness and dampness using their dry or wet qualities. 6. Medicinals related to nature and characteristics needed to be understood in their originality to grasp their unique abilities. 7. Both producer and time of growth were closely related to each medicinal's efficacy. Conclusions : Understanding of the application of medicinals in the Shennong Bencaojing through continuous examination into each medicinal's 'specification' and 'its reasoning', together with their clinical application, will allow for learners to build an understanding of herbal medicinals.

  • This study reveals that the user industry has a limited role in being a source of technological capability in the case of the machine tool industry in Korea where the user industry is relatively more advanced than other capital goods industries. This study examines the sources of technological capability in terms of migration of workforces and flow of product development knowledge. Although the capital goods sector is generally regarded as being the sector where user-producer interaction is important, the user industry is not the seed-bed of technological capability for machine development. Users and producers interact in terms of expressing 'needs', mainly in the form of specifications. As a result of receiving unique specifications from users, the producer learns to react by making specific customised special purpose machines. The user's specification could include information o the imported machine originally used. When confronted with technical problems in developing a new machine, the producer accesses foreign sources of knowledge. This study's finding reveals that users of special purpose machines have a significantly clearer role in providing specifications than do users of general purpose machine tools. Most intensive interactive learning between users and producers in the production process is found in special purpose machine tools. From the empirical findings, policy implications are discussed.

  • When testing products before shipment to the customer, quality characteristics are measured to decide whether or not their values are between the specification limits. Unfortunately, this testing procedure can lead to incorrect decisions because of gauge error. That is, good products can erroneously be qualified as bad, and bad products as good, and this has consequences for producer's and consumer's risk. In cases of such as this, the compressed gauge limit can be used to achieve the desired product quality level dictated by the manufacturer or the customer. A compressed gauge limit is a limit set by the manufacturer on a test gauge that is tighter than the specification limit established by the customer. The compressed gauge limits should be set at levels to achieve the defect levels desired by the customer and simultaneously minimize the loss of good product that is rejected due to errors in the gauges. In this article, the models for determining the defect levels and the losses obtained by adding compressed gauge limits will be developed. A response surface model approach is utilized which allows an optimal operating condition to be generated relatively easily.

  • In this paper, the design of ALT(Accelerated Life Test) requires a sampling plan based on failure-censored(Type II censored) ALT with lognormal life distribution. Specially the environmental effect of products has been emphasized, so we considered the upper life limit as well as lower life limit in the ALT sampling plan. The optimal plan with a high stress and a low stress is used as test plan, and the total sample size for test and lot acceptability constant which minimize an asymptotic variance of maximum likelihood estimator of assumed model parameters and satisfy the given producer's risk and customer's risk are drawn out. These values can be acquired by means of the computer program that we coded for resolving the difficulty and complexity of calculation.

  • We present CReMeS a CORBA-compliant design and implementation of a new real-time communication service. It provides for efficient predictable and scalable communication between information producers and consumers. The CReMeS architecture is based on MidART's Real-Time Channel-based Reflective Memory (RT-CRM) abstraction. This architecture supports the separation of QoS specification between producer and consumer of data and employs a user-level scheduling scheme for communicating real-time tasks. These help us achieve end-to-end predictability and allows our service to scale. The CReMeS architecture provides a CORBA interface to applications and demands no changes to the ORB layer and the language mapping layer. Thus it can run on non real-time Off-The-Shelf ORBs enables applications on these ORBs to have scalable and end-to-end predictable asynchronous communication facility. In addition an application designer can select whether to use an out-of-band channel or the ORB GIOP/IIOP for data communication. This permits a trade-off between performance predictability and reliability. Experimental results demonstrate that our architecture can achieve better performance and predictability than a real-time implementation of the CORBA Even Service when the out-of-band channel is employed for data communication it delivers better predictability with comparable performance when the ORB GIOP/IIOP is used.

  • This paper proposes the variables repetitive group sampling plan where the quality characteristic following normal distribution has upper or lower specification limit. The problem is formulated as a non-linear programming problem where the objective function to minimize is the average sample number and the constraints are related to lot acceptance probabilities at acceptable quality level (AQL) and limiting quality level (LQL) under the operating characteristic curve. Sampling plan tables are constructed for the selection of parameters indexed by AQL and LQL in the cases of known standard deviation and unknown standard deviation. It is shown that the proposed sampling plan significantly reduces the average sample number as compared with the single or the double sampling plan.

  • In this study, the Korean Industrial Standard(KS) penetration grade system was examined to evaluate its statistical validity. It was found from this limited study that the system has no gap between each grade, the binder falling out of limit trespasses into other binder grade. Therefore, many products can have similar property level with an adjacent grade even though the mean value is within the specification limit. It was also found out that the equal range setup of each grade, such as 20 for 40-60, 60-80, 80-100, has no statistical foundation. Since KS penetration grade is defined without gap between each grade, the producer must maintain the coefficient of variation below the level by the ASTM system to satisfy the normal quality control limit of products. Due to its lack of a gap between grades, higher percentage of products will be duplicated even if the mean is at the median of the specification limits due to material's quality uncertainty. Especially if the mean moves toward the upper limit, a half or more of the binder grade will be overlapped with the upper binder grade. Therefore, KS penetration specification should be immediately modified by statistically valid methodologies.
