Purpose: This study determined the correlation between nurses' critical thinking disposition; problem solving process; and nursing performance. It also examined the impact of critical thinking disposition and problem solving process on nursing performance. Methods: The data was collected from 419 nurses. Descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, scheffe test, pearson correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were performed. Results: Nursing performance showed that there were differences according to age, marital status, educational level, total number of years in the career and the length of employment in the present department. The problem solving process showed differences in the educational level. Critical thinking disposition showed differences according to age, educational level and total number of years in the career. Problem solving process and nursing performance showed a positive relationship whereas critical thinking disposition and nurses' performance showed a positive relationship. Factors affecting nursing performance, were nurses' age, duration of employment in the present department, problem solving process and critical thinking disposition. This model was statistically significant and showed 22.1% of the total variance. Conclusion: The attention of nursing administrators should be drawn to the consideration that a certain amount of experience in the current department is positively related to nursing performance. Furthermore, in order to provide a improvement in professional nursing performance, educational programs towards nurses' critical thinking disposition and problem solving process should be provided.
Purpose: This investigation examined the effect of PBL on the meta-cognition, critical thinking, and problem solving process. Method: The research design was pre-posttest with a none qui valent control group design. Scenarios for PBL sessions were developed on the basis of textbooks and patients' charts and tested for content validity. Seventy six nursing students who took a 'Nursing Process' course from two nursing schools participated in the experimental group and control group. The experimental group performed PBL during the semester. Meta-cognition and problem solving processes were assessed by questionnaires which were developed using pedagogics. Critical thinking was measured by the CCTST(California Critical Thinking Skill Test) Form 2000. The data was analyzed by repeated measure (pretest-posttest) MANOVA, and correlation analysis. Result: PBL improved the participants' meta-cognition and problem solving process but not critical thinking. The relationship between meta-cognition and the problem solving process was supported but the relationship between critical thinking and problem solving was not supported. Conclusion: These results suggest that PBL has a positive effect on nursing students' educational outcomes. To improve the problem solving ability of nursing students, PBL should be applied to more subjects in the nursing curriculum.

Purpose: The purpose of this research was to evaluate the effects of PBL on ability of nursing students in Self-Directed Learning, Critical Thinking Disposition and Problem Solving Process. Methods: The research design was a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. For the experimental group PBL was used during one semester (14 weeks). Instruments for data collection were Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale (Kim, 1997), Critical Thinking Disposition Scale (K won et al., 2006) and Problem Solving Process Scale (Lee, 1979). The data were analyzed by repeated measure ANOVA. Results: There were statistically significant improvements in Self-Directed Learning and Critical Thinking between the two groups after PBL. But there was no statistically significant improvement in the Problem Solving Process. Conclusion: These results suggest that PBL has a positive effect on nursing students' education. Therefore, PBL should be used for more subjects in the nursing curriculum.
ABEEK's professional liberal arts education reflecting critical thinking, has been well received by professors and students in the engineering discipline. Also, the demand for further utilization of critical thinking within the engineering curriculum is increasing. To meet such demand, there is a need for experts in the area of critical thinking education and engineering education to come together and search for the most effective method in using critical thinking in engineering design education courses. In this paper, we were able to confirm, through specific application cases, that the problem-solving process of critical thinking can be effectively transferred to an engineering design process, and the elements and criteria of critical thinking can be used as a successful design tool. Also, we explore the possibility of further improving engineering education on the basis of critical thinking.
A teaching manual was developed to incorporate the creative problem solving process into a fashion marking course. Students' creativity, problem solving, critical thinking, and analytical thinking are promoted by applying the creative problem solving process systematically to solve authentic business problems experienced by local apparel business owners. This teaching manual is based on the FourSight Model that consists of Clarify, Ideate, Develop, and Implement. Various tools promoting divergent thinking are also utilized in the process. A local fashion business is invited as a problem owner and four resource groups are formed with students based on the results of the Kirton Adaption Innovation Inventory. Each resource group consists of 6-8 students. The creative problem solving process is implemented into a classroom setting as four 75-minutes sessions that are held twice a week for two consecutive weeks. The local fashion business owner will be in presence during the first (Clarify) and last (Implement) sessions. The instructor facilitator meets with the problem owner outside the classroom three times including pre-session client interview, after the second (Ideate) session, and before the third (Develop) session. This modified CPS manual for fashion marketing and merchandising courses provides practical guidelines to work with local fashion businesses while providing students with learning opportunities of the creative problem solving process.
The aim of this paper is to explore various ways to utilize critical thinking in engineering education. To this end, this paper, in the light of the relationship between critical thinking and the program learning performance of ABEEK, reviews engineering design education, engineering ethics education, and engineering communication education, which are major areas where critical thinking can be utilized in engineering education. As a result, it was confirmed that critical thinking skills, especially the elements and criteria of critical thinking, can contribute to the creative problem-solving process in engineering design education, the rational decision-making process in engineering ethics education, and the effective communication process in engineering communication education.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of multi-mode simulation learning on critical thinking disposition, on the problem solving process and on clinical competence of nursing students. Methods: A non-equivalent control group with pre-posttest was designed. The participants in this study were 65 students who were enrolled in an emergency and critical nursing course at N university. The treatment group consisted of 33 juniors in 2010 and the control group 32 juniors in 2011. Collected data were analyzed using chi-square, independent t-test, and ANCOVA with the SPSS/WIN 18.0 for Window Program. Results: There were significant increases in problem solving process and clinical competence in the treatment group who participated in the multi-mode simulation learning compared to the control group who did not (t=-2.39, p=.020; F=12.76, p=.001). However, there were no significant differences in critical thinking disposition between the treatment and control group (t=0.40, p=.692). Conclusion: Multi-mode simulation is an effective teaching and learning method to enhance the problem solving process and clinical competence of nursing students. Further exploration is needed to develop and utilize multi-mode simulation for diverse scenarios, depending on emergency nursing educational goals and environments and to develop a universal method to measure outcomes.
The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between problem solving ability, critical thinking disposition, creativity and nursing process competence of nursing students. The participants in the study were 246 nursing students enrolled in 2nd year of a BSN program in S city, Korea. Data were collected from June 10 to June 20, 2015 using a structured questionnaire. Relationship between general characteristics and solving ability, critical thinking disposition, creativity and nursing process competence was analyzed by t-test, ANOVA and Kruskal-wallis. Correlation among problem solving ability, critical thinking disposition, creativity and nursing process competence was analyzed by pearson correlation coefficient. There was a statistically significant difference in problem solving with the reason for application, major satisfaction. There was a significant positive correlation between problem solving ability, critical thinking disposition, creativity and self efficacy. Nursing process competence was't a significant between problem solving ability, critical thinking disposition, creativity and self efficacy. These findings show that there is a need to develop strategies to improve self efficacy and nursing process competence for student nurses.
Critical thinking is essential to implementing the nursing process requiring timely decision making. The study examined the effects of a critical thinking course for nurses in the RN-BSN program. The study used a pre- and post-test design with a control group. The experimental group was a convenience sample of 24 working nurses attending a health college. The control group was 24 fellow nurses. The nursing process-based critical thinking course was provided to the experimental group two and half hours a week for 8 weeks. Teaching methods included lectures followed by a summary and quiz, brainstorming and action learning, and lecturer feedback. A pamphlet about views of professional occupation was provided to the control group. The data were collected using self-report questionnaires and analyzed to examine differences in the test scores before and after the intervention. The scores of critical thinking disposition, problem-solving process, and clinical competence increased significantly in the experimental group but did not in the control group. The difference between the two groups was also statistically significant in critical thinking disposition, problem-solving process, and clinical competence. It is necessary that a robust educational program or training to enhance critical thinking ability of nurses are provided in clinical settings and that nurses keep going on thinking critically in their practice.
