Simulation-based hull form optimization is a typical HEB (high-dimensional, expensive computationally, black-box) problem. Conventional optimization algorithms easily fall into the "curse of dimensionality" when dealing with HEB problems. A recently proposed Cross-Entropy (CE) optimization algorithm is an advanced stochastic optimization algorithm based on a probability model, which has the potential to deal with high-dimensional optimization problems. Currently, the CE algorithm is still in the theoretical research stage and rarely applied to actual engineering optimization. One reason is that the Monte Carlo (MC) method is used to estimate the high-dimensional integrals in parameter update, leading to a large sample size. This paper proposes an improved CE algorithm based on quasi-Monte Carlo (QMC) estimation using high-dimensional truncated Sobol subsequence, referred to as the QMC-CE algorithm. The optimization performance of the proposed algorithm is better than that of the original CE algorithm. With a set of identical control parameters, the tests on six standard test functions and a hull form optimization problem show that the proposed algorithm not only has faster convergence but can also apply to complex simulation optimization problems.
In this paper, we investigate the resource allocation problem in time-varying heterogeneous wireless networks (HetNet) with multi-homing user equipments (UE). The stochastic optimization model is employed to maximize the network utility, which is defined as the difference between the HetNet's throughput and the total energy consumption cost. In harmony with the hierarchical architecture of HetNet, the problem of stochastic optimization of resource allocation is decomposed into two subproblems by the Lyapunov optimization theory, associated with the flow control in transport layer and the power allocation in physical (PHY) layer, respectively. For avoiding the signaling overhead, outdated dynamic information, and scalability issues, the distributed resource allocation method is developed for solving the two subproblems based on the primal-dual decomposition theory. After that, the adaptive resource allocation algorithm is developed to accommodate the timevarying wireless network only according to the current network state information, i.e. the queue state information (QSI) at radio access networks (RAN) and the channel state information (CSI) of RANs-UE links. The tradeoff between network utility and delay is derived, where the increase of delay is approximately linear in V and the increase of network utility is at the speed of 1/V with a control parameter V. Extensive simulations are presented to show the effectiveness of our proposed scheme.
In this paper, we preposed a chaos optimization method to reduce computational effort and enhance optimality of the solution in feeder reconfiguration problem. Chaos method in optimization problem searches the global optimal solution on the regularity of chaotic motions and more easily escapes from local or near optimal solution than stochastic optimization algorithms. The chaos optimization method is tested on 15 buses and 32 buses distribution systems, and the test results indicate that it is able to determine appropriate switching options for global optimum configuration with less computation.

The propellant grain configuration is a design variable that determines the shape and performance of a solid rocket motor. Grain configuration variables have complicated effects on the motor performance; so the global optimization problem has to be solved in order to design the configuration variables. The grain performance has been analyzed by means of the grain burn-back and internal ballistic analysis, and the optimization technique searches for the configuration variables that satisfy the requirements. The deterministic and stochastic optimization techniques have been applied for the grain optimization, but the results are imperfect. In this study, the optimization design of the configuration variables has been performed using the hybrid optimization technique, which combines those two techniques. As a result, the hybrid optimization technique has proved to be efficient for the grain optimization design.
The cost of a looped pipe network is affected by a set of loop flows. The mathematical model for optimizing the looped pipe network is expressed in the optimal set of loop flows to apply to a stochastic optimization method. Because the feasible region of the looped pipe network problem is nonconvex with multiple local optima, the Modified Stochastic Probing Method is suggested to efficiently search the feasible region. The method consists of two phase: i) a global search phase(the stochastic probing method) and ii) a local search phase(the nearest neighbor method). While the global search sequentially improves a local minimum, the local search escapes out of a local minimum trapped in the global search phase and also refines a final solution. In order to test the method, a standard test problem from the literature is considered for the optimal design of the paralled expansion of an existing network. The optimal solutions thus found have significantly smaller costs than the ones reported previously by other researchers.
In this paper, we investigate the portfolio optimization problem under the SVCEV model, which is a hybrid model of constant elasticity of variance (CEV) and stochastic volatility, by taking into account of minimum-entropy robustness. The Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation is derived and the first two orders of optimal strategies are obtained by utilizing an asymptotic approximation approach. We also derive the first two orders of practical optimal strategies by knowing that the underlying Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process is not observable. Finally, we conduct numerical experiments and sensitivity analysis on the leading optimal strategy and the first correction term with respect to various values of the model parameters.
In this study, the three different meta-heuristics namely the Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO), Stochastic Fractal Search (SFS), and Adaptive Differential Evolution with Optional External Archive (JADE) algorithms are examined. This study considers optimization of the planer frame to minimize its weight subjected to the strength and displacement constraints as per the American Institute of Steel and Construction - Load and Resistance Factor Design (AISC-LRFD). The GWO algorithm is associated with grey wolves' activities in the social hierarchy. The SFS algorithm works on the natural phenomenon of growth. JADE on the other hand is a powerful self-adaptive version of a differential evolution algorithm. A one-bay ten-story planar steel frame problem is examined in the present work to investigate the design ability of the proposed algorithms. The frame design is produced by optimizing the W-shaped cross sections of beam and column members as per AISC-LRFD standard steel sections. The results of the algorithms are compared. In addition, these results are also mapped with other state-of-art algorithms.

In this paper, a robust stationary Kalman filter is designed by minimizing selected performance indices so that it is less sensitive to uncertainties. The uncertainties include not only stochastic factors such as process noise and measurement noise, but also deterministic factors such as unknown initial estimation error, modeling error and sensing bias. To reduce the effect on the uncertainties, three performance indices that should be minimized are selected based on the quantitative error analysis to both the deterministic and the stochastic uncertainties. The selected indices are the size of the observer gain, the condition number of the observer matrix, and the estimation error variance. The observer gain is obtained by optimally solving the multi-objectives optimization problem that minimizes the indices. The robustness of the proposed filter is demonstrated through the comparison with the standard Kalman filter.
The optimum design of base isolation system considering model parameter uncertainty is usually performed by using the unconditional response of structure obtained by the total probability theory, as the performance index. Though, the probabilistic approach is powerful, it cannot be applied when the maximum possible ranges of variations are known and can be only modelled as uncertain but bounded type. In such cases, the interval analysis method is a viable alternative. The present study focuses on the bounded optimization of base isolation system to mitigate the seismic vibration effect of structures characterized by bounded type system parameters. With this intention in view, the conditional stochastic response quantities are obtained in random vibration framework using the state space formulation. Subsequently, with the aid of matrix perturbation theory using first order Taylor series expansion of dynamic response function and its interval extension, the vibration control problem is transformed to appropriate deterministic optimization problems correspond to a lower bound and upper bound optimum solutions. A lead rubber bearing isolating a multi-storeyed building frame is considered for numerical study to elucidate the proposed bounded optimization procedure and the optimum performance of the isolation system.

For many practical optimization problems where the system components are stochastic, the objective functions can not be represented analytically. Furthermore, many of these problems are characterized by the presence of multiple and conflicting objectives. In this research, we introduce a new algorithm through an interactive cutting plane method for solving this multi-criteria simulation optimization problem. Then a turning process is evaluated through the proposed algorithm.
