  • A wideband patch antenna fed by an L-strip feeder is studied. The objective of this paper is to design small wideband antenna for 3G and 4G wireless mobile communication service. The enhanced features were confirmed and proved by comparing the proposed antenna with the antennae that have been reported in the relevant literatures. Measurement results confirm that an impedance bandwidth($VSWR{\leq}2$) of 636MHz(32.5%, fo=1,960MHz) is achieved at 3G and 4G frequency band for L-strip-fed triangular patch antenna. In general, probe feed has only the parasitic reactance caused by the probe, which reduces the bandwidth performance of the antenna. The experimental results proved that the effects of improvement could be achieved because the proposed antenna is capable of compensating the parasitic reactance from the feeding mechanism. The studied antenna can be designed easily for extension of array because it has simple structure.

  • Recently, the developments in generating and amplifying ultrashort optical pulses $(ps=10^{-12}s or fs=10^{-15}s)$ have imposed on great advances in the time-resolved laser spectroscopy. Especially, the transient absorption spectroscopy has a wide application range and the main idea of this technique is pump & probe method. After the pump pulse makes the material an excited or a transient states, the probe pulse is sent through the material to measure the absorbance change due to the transient states. Here, if the absorbance change was measured by the time delay between pump & probe pulses, the dynamic information of the excited or the transient states (the transient abnsorption changes by time & wavelength) can be obtained. At our laboratory, the ultrashort optic1 pulse (

  • In this paper, we have designed and favricated the high gain and wideband microstrip patch antenna including IEEE 802.11a. To widen the bandwidth of microstrip antenna, firstly we have used the microstrip line-coaxial probe feeding method and inserted a U-slot in the rectangular patch. Secondly, to improve the antenna gain, we have used a $2{\times}2$ array structure. From the measured results, wideband characteristics of 1 GHz bandwidth($5.110{\sim}6.142$ GHz) for VSWR<2 was obtained. The measured eain was 13 dBi in both the E-plane and H-plane at the frequency of 5.15 GHz, 5.35 GHz, 5.50 GHz, and 5.85 GHz.

  • Nuclear power plant contain many dissimilar metal welds that connect carbon steel components with stainless steel pipes using alloy600 welding materials. Primary water stress corrosion cracks at dissimilar metal welds have been continuously reported around the world. In periodic integrity evaluations, dissimilar metal welds are examined using a generic ultrasonic testing procedure, KPD-UT-10. In this procedure, the gap between the probe and examination surface is limited to 1/32 inch (0.8mm). It is not easy to test some dissimilar metal welds in Korean plants applying ordinary technology because of their tapered shapes and irregular surface conditions. This paper introduces a method for applying a flexible phased array technology to improve the reliability of ultrasonic testing results for various shapes and surface conditions. The artificial flaws in specimens with irregular surfaces were completely detected using the flexible phased array ultrasonic technology. Therefore, it can be said that the technology is applicable to field examination.

  • In this paper, The four types SRA(Sequential Rotated Array) antennas has been analyzed. Those are consisted of a 4-elements SRA, a 8-elements SRA, the $2{\times}2$ planer array SRA and the triple (4+8+4)-elements SRA. These LHCP SRA antennas are used a probe feeding multi-layer truncated microstrip antenna whose center frequency is 11.85 CHz. The cooperated feeding circuits are designed for feeding to each elements with equal amplitude and regular phase. Comparing with the each simulation results and experiment results of this 4-type SRA antennas, the triple (4+8+4)-elements SRA showed the most electrical characteristics in the degree of integration, high gain and low cross polarization.

  • This study was aimed at investigating the gene expression profile in basal ganglia of cadmium exposed rat based on cDNA array analysis. For cDNA array analysis, adult Sprague-Dawley male rats (350 ${\pm}$ 25 g) were intraperitoneally injected with 2.0 mg/kg body weight/day of CdCl2 (0.3 ml) for 5 days. For doserelated gene expression analysis rats were intraperitoneally injected with 0.0, 0.1, 0.3, 1.0 mg/kg body weight/day of CdCl$_2$ for 5 days. Control rats were injected with equal volume of saline. Cadmium concentration of brain was analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometer. For cDNA array, RNA samples were extracted from basal ganglia and reverse-transcribed in the presence of [${\alpha}$32P]-dATP. Membrane sets of the Atlas Rat 1.2 array II and Toxicology array 1.2 (Clontech, Palo Alto, CA) were hybridized with cDNA probe sets. RT-PCR was employed to validate the relative gene expression patterns obtained from the cDNA array. Northern blot hybridization methods were employed to assess the dose-related gene expression. Among the 2352 cDNAs, 671 genes were detected in both array sets and 63 genes of 38 classes showed significant (more than two fold) changes in expression. Thirty five of these genes were up-regulated and twenty eight were down-regulated in the cadmium exposed group. According to the dose-related gene expression analysis, heat shock 27 kDa protein (HSP27), neurodegeneration-associated protein 1 (Neurodap 1) genes were significantly up-regulated and melatonin receptor 1a (Mel1a), Kinesin family member 3C (KIF3C), novel kinesinrelated protein (KIF1D) genes were significantly downregulated even in the low-dose of cadmium exposed group (0.1 mg/kg body weight/day). Conclusions Sixty three genes detected in this study can give some more useful informations about the cadmium-induced neurotoxicity in the basal ganglia. As well as, HSP27, Neurodap1, Mel1a, KIF3C and KIF1D genes may be useful for the study of the cadmium-induced neurotoxicity because these genes showed dramatic changes of mRNA levels in response to the low dose of cadmium exposure.

  • It is suggested that relativistic jets associated with active galactic nuclei (AGNs) can have great impacts on the evolution of the host galaxy. However, the physical properties of AGN jets including the formation mechanism are not well known to date, and hence the AGN feedback on the host galaxy is yet poorly understood. OVV 1633+382 as a highly variable AGN source (a.k.a. blazer) with a compact core and very well developed jet components is an excellent laboratory to study the jet formation mechanism of radio-loud AGN. Near 2002, a major flare was reported at mm wavelength with a dramatic increase of the flux, which is likely to be followed by a dense and bright outflow. In order to probe the evolution of the innermost region of this radio-loud AGN, we have monitored using the Very Large Baseline Array (VLBA) and the Effelsberg 100m single-dish radio telescope in 12 epochs from 2002 and 2005. The observations were conducted at 22, 43 and 86 GHz in full polarization mode. In this work, we present the intensity and spectral index maps at 22 and 43 GHz from our monitoring observations. We probe the kinematics and geometry of individual jet components to discuss the evolution of the jet.

  • The advent of microarray technologies gives an opportunity to moni tor the expression of ten thousands of genes, simultaneously. Such microarray data can be deteriorated by experimental errors and image artifacts, which generate non-negligible outliers that are estimated by 15% of typical microarray data. Thus, it is an important issue to detect and correct the se faulty probes prior to high-level data analysis such as classification or clustering. In this paper, we propose a systematic procedure for the detection of faulty probes and its proper correction in Genechip array based on multivariate statistical approaches. Principal component analysis (PCA), one of the most widely used multivariate statistical approaches, has been applied to construct a statistical correlation model with 20 pairs of probes for each gene. And, the faulty probes are identified by inspecting the squared prediction error (SPE) of each probe from the PCA model. Then, the outlying probes are reconstructed by the iterative optimization approach minimizing SPE. We used the public data presented from the gene chip project of human fibroblast cell. Through the application study, the proposed approach showed good performance for probe correction without removing faulty probes, which may be desirable in the viewpoint of the maximum use of data information.

  • In this study, field measurements on KTX, Nuriro and TTX train have been conducted at Kyeongbu and Honam line to predict the wind gust under train at the speed-up of major conventional railway lines using Kiel-probe array and multi-channel pressure scanning system. The results show that the average wind velocity during train passage normalized by train speed is independent to train speed, thus the wind gust for a given train type at the speed-up condition could be predicted. The relationship between the shape of underbody and the characteristics of the underbody wind gust has been discussed.

  • We probe 12CO J=2-1 and 13CO J=1-0 properties of a Virgo disk galaxy, NGC 4402 which is located near the cluster center. Our goal is to study the impact of intra cluster medium (ICM) on the molecular gas of a galaxy in the cluster environment. It has been believed that cluster galaxies are deficient in atomic hydrogen gas (HI gas) compared to their field counterparts and now there is much evidence that low density ISM can be easily removed by ram pressure caused by ICM wind. Meanwhile, no significant molecular gas deficiency of the cluster galaxy population has been found yet they show overall lower star formation rate than galaxies in the field, and it is still controversy whether dense ISM can be also stripped by the ICM wind or not. NGC 4402 with truncated HI disk($D_{HI}/D_{opt}$ ~ 0.75 and only 36%of HI gas compare to field galaxies of a similar size) and a disturbed gas morphology, appears to have strong ongoing ram pressure. Using high resolution 12 and 13CO data of NGC 4402 from a Sub Millimeter Array (SMA), we probe the molecular gas properties under strong ICM pressure. We discuss how its star formation activity and hence the global color of NGC4402 would be changed in the future.
