A considerable research is available on the seismic response of Reinforced Concrete (RC) shear wall-frame buildings, but the studies on the reliability of such buildings, with the consideration of human error, are limited. In the present study, a detailed procedure for reliability assessment of RC shear wall-frame building subjected to earthquake loading against serviceability limit state is presented. Monte Carlo simulation was used for the reliability assessment. The procedure was implemented on a 10-story RC building to demonstrate that the shear walls improve the reliability substantially. The annual and life-time failure probabilities of the studied building were estimated by employing the information of the annual probability of earthquake occurrence and the design life of the building. A simple risk-based cost assessment procedure that relates both the structural life-time failure probability and the target reliability with the total cost of the building was then presented. The structural failure probability (i.e., the probability of exceeding the allowable drift) considering human errors was also studied. It was observed that human error in the estimation of total load and/or concrete strength changes the reliability sharply.
This paper attempts to develop the analytical model of estimating the fatigue damage using a linear elastic fracture mechanics method. The stress history on a welding member, when a truck passed over a bridge, was defined as a block loading and the crack closure theory was used. These theories explain the influence of a load on a structure. This study undertook an analysis of the stress range frequency considering both dead load stress and crack opening stress. A probability method applied to stress range frequency distribution and the probability distribution parameters of it was obtained by Maximum likelihood Method and Determinant. Monte Carlo Simulation which generates a probability variants (stress range) output failure block loadings. The probability distribution of failure block loadings was acquired by Maximum likelihood Method and Determinant. This can calculate the fatigue reliability preventing the fatigue failure of a welding member. The failure block loading divided by the average daily truck traffic is a predictive remaining life by a day. Fatigue reliability analysis was carried out for the welding member of the bottom flange of a cross beam and the vertical stiffener of a steel box bridge by the proposed model. Results showed that the primary factor effecting failure time was crack opening stress. It was important to decide the crack opening stress for using the proposed model. Also according to the 50% reliability and 90%, 99.9% failure times were indicated.
The purpose of this study is fatigue damage assessment for large sized casting parts (hub and mainframe) of the 3MW offshore wind turbine by computer simulation. Hub and mainframe durability assessment is necessary because wind turbine have to guarantee for 20 years. Fatigue life evaluation must be considered all of fatigue load conditions as the components are wind load transmission path. Palmgren-Miner linear damage accumulation hypothesis is applied for fatigue life estimation with stress-life approach. S-N curve for the spheroid graphite cast iron EN-GJS-400-18-LT is derived according to durability guidelines. Reduction factors were applied for survival probability, surface roughness, material quality and partial safety factor according to Germanischer Lloyd rules. To calculate fatigue damage, stress tensors, extracted from the unity load calculation from ANSYS is multiplied with time track of fatigue loads extracted from GH bladed. Damage accumulation is performed with all of fatigue load conditions at each finite element nodes. In this study maximum nodal damage value is under 1.0. casted parts are safe. Drive systems are composed of spiral bevel gear, axle and bearings. In this paper, drive systems and the part of them are analyzed and a correlation of the factor that shows the geometry of spiral bevel gear is evaluated. The Weibull distribution of probability for survival, which caused by the load of bearings and gear teeth, would be calculated, and the life and reliability with equivalent function could be measured more specifically. The reliability methods are applied as a probability of which the gear drive systems are satisfiably operated.
Bridges are rated at two levels by either Load Factor Design (LFD) or Allowable Stress Design (ASD). The lower level rating is called Inventory Rating and the upper level rating is called Operating Rating. To maintain bridges effectively, there is an urgent need to assess actual bridge loading carrying capacity and to predict their remaining life from a system reliability viewpoint. The lifetime functions are introduced and explained to predict the time-dependent failure probability. The bridge studied in this paper was built 30 years ago in rural area. For this bridge, the load test and rehabilitation were conducted. The time-dependent system failure probability is predicted with or without rehabilitation. As a case study, an optional rehabilitation is suggested, and fir this rehabilitation, load rating is computed and the time-dependent system failure probability is predicted. Based on rehabilitation costs and extended service lifes, the optimal rehabilitation is suggested.
Based on translation models, both Gaussian and non-Gaussian wind fields are generated using spectral representation method for investigating the influence of non-Gaussian characteristics and directivity effect of wind load on fatigue damage of wind turbine. Using the blade aerodynamic model and multi-body dynamics, dynamic responses are calculated. Using linear damage accumulation theory and linear crack propagation theory, crack initiation life and crack propagation life are discussed with consideration of the joint probability density distribution of the wind direction and mean wind speed in detail. The result shows that non-Gaussian characteristics of wind load have less influence on fatigue life of wind turbine in the area with smaller annual mean wind speeds. Whereas, the influence becomes significant with the increase of the annual mean wind speed. When the annual mean wind speeds are 7 m/s and 9 m/s at hub height of 90 m, the crack initiation lives under softening non-Gaussian wind decrease by 10% compared with Gaussian wind fields or at higher hub height. The study indicates that the consideration of the influence of softening non-Gaussian characteristics of wind inflows can significantly decrease the fatigue life, and, if neglected, it can result in non-conservative fatigue life estimates for the areas with higher annual mean wind speeds.

Concrete structures such as bridge, pavement, airfield, and offshore structure are normally subjected to repeated load. This paper proposes a failure probability models of concrete subjected to split tension repeated-loads, based on experimental results. The fatigue tests were performed at the stress ratio of 0.1, the loading shape of sine, the frequency of 20Hz, and the stress levels of 90, 80 and 70%. The fatigue test specimen was 150mm in diameter and 75mm in thickness. The fatigue analysis did not include which exceeded 0.9 of statistical coefficient of determination values or did not failure at 2$\times$$10^6$ cycles. The graphical method, the moment method, and maximum likelihood estimation method were used to obtain Weibull distribution parameters. The goodness-of-fit test by Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was acceptable 5% level of significance. As a result, the proposed failure probability model based on the two-parameter($\alpha and \mu$) Weibull distribution was good enough to estimate accurately the fatigue life subjected to tension mode.
Although the strengthening effect of deteriorated concrete bridge decks has been studied by various authors, most researches are focused on the experimental works on the pulsating loading in laboratory in spite of deterioration of deck caused by moving vehicle loads. In this research, a theoretical live load model that was proposed to reflect an effect of moving vehicle loads is formulated from a statistical approach on the measurement of real traffic loads for various time periodsin Korea. Fatigue life and strengthening effect of strengthened bridge decks strengthened with either Carbon Fiber Sheet or Grid typed Carbon Fiber Polymer Plastic by the probabilistic and the reliability analyses are assessed. As a results, secondary bridge deck (DB18) strengthened with FRP ensures a sufficient fatigue resistance against the increased traffic loads as well as load carrying capacity in life cycle.
Ball bearing is a device that supports and transmits a load acting on a rotating shaft, and it is a type of rolling bearings that uses the rolling friction of the balls by inserting balls between the inner ring and the outer ring. Grease, which is prepared by mixing a thickener with a base oil, is a lubricant commonly used in bearings and has the advantage of a simple structure and easy handling. Bearings are increasingly being used in high value-added products such as semiconductors, aviation, and robots in the era of the 4th industrial revolution. Accordingly, there is an increasing demand for bearing grease. The selection of grease is an important factor in the bearing design. Therefore, a study must be conducted on the grease life evaluation to select an appropriate grease according to operating conditions such as a high temperature, high rotational speed, and high load. In this study, we evaluate the life of ball-bearing grease according to various operating conditions, namely, temperature, speed, and load changes. For this, we develop and theoretically verify a grease life test machine for ball bearings. We conduct a life test of grease according to various operating conditions of bearings and predict the grease life with a 10% and 50% failure probability using the Weibull analysis. In addition, we analyze the oxide characteristics of the grease over time using the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and the deterioration characteristics of the grease using the carbonyl index.
Constant .DELTA.K fatigue crack growth rate experiments were performed by applying an intermediate single and multiple overload for structural steel, SM45C. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the influence of multiple overloads at various stress intensity factor ranges and the effect of statistical variability of crack retardation behavior. The normalized delayed load cycle, delayed crack length and the minimum crack growth rate are increased with increasing baseline stress intensity factor range when the overload ratio and the number of overload application were constant. The crack retardation under low baseline stress intensity factor range increases by increasing the number of overload application, but the minimum crack growth rate decreases by increasing the number of overload application. A strong linear correlation exists between the minimum crack growth rate and the number of overload applications. And, it was observed that the variability in the crack growth retardation behavior are presented, the probability distribution functions of delayed load cycle, delayed crack length and crack growth life are 2-parameter Weibull. The coefficient of variation of delayed load cycle and delayed crack length for the number of 10 overload applications data are 14.8 and 9.2%, respectively.
