  • Four monogonont rotifers, Filinia hofmanni Koste, 1980, Lecane pusilla Harring, 1914, Mikrocodides chlaena (Gosse, 1886), and Proales fallaciosa Wulfert, 1937, were newly recorded in Korea. The genera Mikrocodides Bergendal, 1892 and Proales Gosse, 1886 were recorded for the first time in Korea. Mikrocodides chlaena and Proales fallaciosa were found from soil samples and are both soft-bodied species. Filinia hofmanni has previously been recorded mainly in Europe, and this is its first record in Asia. Lecane pusilla is the 24th lecanid rotifer recorded in Korea, and its morphological characteristics are consistent with previous research of L. pusilla. We have provided the morphological diagnoses of the four Korean specimens in this study, along with the partial sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I(COI) gene of three species.

  • This study determined the optimum microalgae species and concentration for growth of small rotifer Proales similis, in community cultures by feeding it several different foods. Four single trials (Tetraselmis suecica, TET; Isochrysis galbana, ISO; Nannochloropsis oculata, NAN; freshwater Chlorella vulgaris, CHL) were conducted at 5 psu and $25^{\circ}C$. The maximum density and specific growth rate (SRG) were highest for rotifer fed CHL reaching 1,075 individuals (inds.)/mL and 0.83 respectively. By contrast, other foods of ISO, NAN and TET resulted in poor growth rates and maximum density. In the freshwater C. vulgaris experiments examining a range of 0.05 to $8.8mg/10^4rotifers$, the growth of rotifer tended to decrease with the amount of supplement. The maximum density and SGR of females was highest at 910 inds./mL and 0.55 respectively, at $0.05mg/10^4rotifers$. These results suggest that the best microalgae species for the culture of P. similis is freshwater C. vulgaris and the optimum concentration is $0.05mg/10^4rotifers$.

  • We investigated the optimum salinity and temperature conditions for the mass culture of small rotifer, Proales similis. In the salinity experiment ranging from 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 33‰, growth tended to decrease with salinity increase. Most agreeable salinity for rotifer growth was 1‰ in which maximum density and specific growth rate (SGR) were obtained. In the temperature experiments ranging from 15, 20, 25, 30 and $35^{\circ}C$, continuous growth of rotifer populations was found up to $35^{\circ}C$. The highest maximum density (2,060 inds./mL) of rotifer was observed at $25^{\circ}C$ in given temperature regime. Also, the SGR of females showed increasing tendencies with the increase of temperature. These results suggest that the optimum salinity and temperature for mass culture of P. similis may be 1‰ and $25^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of microbial inoculation on sewage sludge composting. The number and species of microorganisms in sewage sludge sampled on February were higher than those sampled on August. The composting of sewage sludge is inhibited by the polyacrylamide cation, which was used as a coagulant and known to repress the growth of microorganisms. The growth of all microorganisms was inhibited by the addition of the polyacrylamide cation at a concentration of more than 0.8%. The species and viable counts of microorganisms were observed to increase during composting sewage sludge by inoculation of the effective microorganisms and addition of the pine tree sawdust as a bulking agent, compared with those without inoculation. A variety of organisms in compost(sewage sludge plus sawdust) were observed after composting for 30 days, such as Fragilaria sp., Proales sp., Vorticella sp., Schizothrix sp., Anabaena sp., Zoothaminium sp., Epstylis sp., Arcella sp., Balantidium sp., Actinophrys sp., Synedra sp., Euglypha sp., Ulothrix sp., Anacystis sp., and Clostium sp.
