The purposes of this study were (1) to investigate the differences in the level of children's knowledge and reasoning skills due to the sloping phenomenon according to their ages and the types of tasks they were asked to perform, and (2) to investigate whether children's prior knowledge is changed to post knowledge through their reasoning. A total of 120 subjects, forty from each of the age groups 4, 6 and 8 were selected for the study. The major findings are presented below : 8-year old children showed higher levels of prior knowledge than 6-year old children. The prior knowledge level of the "size" task was higher than that of the "weight" task. 6-and 8-year old children showed higher levels of reasoning than 4-year old children. The reasoning level of the "size" task was higher than that of the "weight" task. 6-and 8-year old children showed higher levels of post knowledge than 4-year old children. However, there was no difference in children's post knowledge according to task difference. Through the different types of reasoning involved in the children's performances of the two tasks, changes in the prior knowledge of the sloping phenomenon were observed among all age groups.

This study aimed at finding the ways to improve competitiveness of Korean low cost carriers in the highly competitive air transport market by understanding the relation among the influence of prior knowledge, service quality on customer satisfaction and reuse intention. The result of the research is as the following. At first, the influence of prior knowledge on customer satisfaction and reuse intention was statistically significant. The result indicates that customers who have much prior knowledge are more likely to be satisfied and to reuse. Secondly, the test for finding out the influence of service quality on customer satisfaction and reuse intention was statistically significant also. Thirdly, the results revealed that customer satisfaction positively influenced reuse intension. The influence of service quality on customer satisfaction and reuse intention reached the same research result compared with the existing literature.
In this study, the ausformed martensite cooled to $-196^{\circ}C$ with various deformation degrees in Fe-30%Ni-0.24%C alloy was transformed to reversed austenite at $500^{\circ}C$ by cyclic reverse martensitic transformation. The effects of prior deformation and the number of cyclic reverse transformation on the microstructure and the mechanical properities of reversed anstensite were investigated. Experimental results showed that the strength of reversed austenite was higher than that of original austenite. This is due to higher dislocation density and grain refining. The reversed austenite formed from ausformed martensite was highly strengthened by prior deformation. This strengthening effect of reversed austenite is attributed to higher dislocation density than grain fefining. The yield strength of reversed austenite below 30% prior deformation, but above 30% prior deformation the strength of reversed austenite is lower than that of deformed austenite. This is due to partly disappearance of strain hardening effect at higher deformation degree by reverse transformation. The strength of reversed austenite is increased with the number of cyclic transformation. Especially, it is principally strengthened by the first cyclic transformation and shows higher increase in yield strength than that of ultimate tensile strength.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the connection between students' errors and prior knowledge as an attempt to design an efficient teaching method in decimal computation. A survey on decimal computations was conducted in two 6th grade elementary school classrooms. Error patterns on decimal computations were analyzed and clinical interviews were conducted with 8 students according to their error patterns. Main errors resulted from the insufficient understanding of prior knowledge such as place value, connection between decimals and fractions, meaning of operations, and computation principles of fractions. In order to help students overcome such obstacles, a teaching experiment was designed in a manner that strengthens a profound understanding of prior knowledge related to decimal computations, and connects such knowledge to actual decimal calculations. This study showed that well-designed lesson plans with base-ten blocks might decrease students' errors by helping them understand decimals and connect their prior knowledge to decimal operations.
Bayesian experimental design is a useful concept in applied statistics for the design of efficient experiments especially if prior knowledge in the experiment is available. However, a theoretical or numerical approach is not simple to implement. We review the concept of a Bayesian experiment approach for linear and nonlinear statistical models. We investigate relationships between prior knowledge and optimal design to identify Bayesian experimental design process characteristics. A balanced design is important if we do not have prior knowledge; however, prior knowledge is important in design and expert opinions should reflect an efficient analysis. Care should be taken if we set a small sample size with a vague improper prior since both Bayesian design and non-Bayesian design provide incorrect solutions.
Lasso (Tibshirani, 1996) and Elastic Net (Zou and Hastie, 2005) have been widely used in various fields for simultaneous variable selection and coefficient estimation. Bayesian methods using a conditional Laplace and a double Pareto prior specification have been discussed in the form of hierarchical specification. Full conditional posterior distributions with each priors have been derived. We compare the performance of Bayesian lassos with Laplace prior and the performance with double Pareto prior using simulations. We also apply the proposed Bayesian hierarchical models to real data sets to predict the collapse of governments in Asia.
In order to evaluate the relation between prior structure and fatigue strength on a induction surface hardened medium carbon steel(SAE1050M) for automotive drive shafts, torsional fatigue test were conducted with various cases of different hardened depths and applied loads. Prior structures of the steel such as pearlite, fine pearlite and spheroidal pearlite were prepared by conventional nomalizing, tempering after quenching and spheroidized annealing, respectively. Maximum torsional fatigue strength can be obtained when the case depth is 18~25% diameter of the bar in each prior structure. The effect of case depth on the torsional fatigue strength was different depending on applied load to specimen, but the most good fatigue life was shown in the case of pearlitic structure when the case depth was 4.0~5.5mm(18~25% of bar diameter). Among three different prior structures, energy consumption, to obtain high strength or to get the same case depth, was the most saved in the case of pearlitic structure.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of prior information about ICU environment on the anxiety and environmental stress of cardiac surgery ICU patients. Methods: A non-equivalent control group non-synchronized quasi-experimental research design was used. Participants were 60 (control 30, experimental 30) patients who had been admitted to ICU. Prior information about the ICU environment was provided to the experimental group. The anxiety level of subjects was measured by State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and the stress level of subjects was measured by the Intensive Care Unit Environmental Stressor Scale (ICUESS). Data were analyzed using a Chi-square test or a Fisher's exact test, independent samples t-test, and paired samples t-test. Results: There was no difference in Anxiety (t=-0.58, p=.563), but there was a significant difference in environmental stress (t=10.46, p<.001). Conclusion: Providing prior information would be an effective nursing intervention to reduce environmental stress.
In this research, magnetoresistance (MR) ratio (MR), resistivity, and exchange coupling field $(H_{ex})$ behaviors for sputter deposited spin valves with FeMn antiferromagnetic layer have been extensively investigated by rapid thermal annealing (RTA) as well as conventional annealing (CA) method. 10 s of RTA revealed that interdiffusion was not significant up to $325^{\circ}C$ at the interfaces between the layers when the RTA time was short. The MR of FeMn spin valves were reduced when the spin valves were exposed to temperature of $250^{\circ}C$, even for a short time period of 10 s prior to CA. $H_{ex}$ was maintained up to $325^{\circ}C$ of CA when the specimen was subjected to 10 s of RTA at $200^{\circ}C$ prior to CA, which is $25^{\circ}C$ higher than the result obtained from the CA without prior RTA. Therefore, the stability of $H_{ex}$ could be enhanced by a prior RTA before performing CA up to annealing temperature of $325^{\circ}C$. MR and sensitivity of the specimens annealed without magnetic field up to $275^{\circ}C$ were recovered to the values prior to CA, but $H_{ex}$ was not recovered. This means that reduced MR sensitivity and MR during the device fabrication can be recovered by a field RTA.
The general path model (GPM) is one approach for performing degradation-based, or Type III, prognostics. The GPM fits a parametric function to the collected observations of a prognostic parameter and extrapolates the fit to a failure threshold. This approach has been successfully applied to a variety of systems when a sufficient number of prognostic parameter observations are available. However, the parametric fit can suffer significantly when few data are available or the data are very noisy. In these instances, it is beneficial to include additional information to influence the fit to conform to a prior belief about the evolution of system degradation. Bayesian statistical approaches have been proposed to include prior information in the form of distributions of expected model parameters. This requires a number of run-to-failure cases with tracked prognostic parameters; these data may not be readily available for many systems. Reliability information and stressor-based (Type I and Type II, respectively) prognostic estimates can provide the necessary prior belief for the GPM. This article presents the Bayesian updating framework to include prior information in the GPM and compares the efficacy of including different information sources on two data sets.
