  • The structure should be designed to be safe to any direction of earthquake input. However, the reference axes whereby the structure is analyzed and designed against earthquake may influence the design member forces. This study is concerned with the effect of the choice of the reference axes on the seismic design member forces. The analytical results on member forces using the principal axes suggested by Wilson and the global axes generally adopted in design offices show that the values of member forces by the principal axes be about $15\%$ smaller than those by the global axes in the example structure.

  • The axes of upper forearm coordinate system have been considered as principal axis of each segment which was component of elbow joint. The purpose of this study was to verify whether the mean direction(principal axis) of instantaneous axes of rotation for pure flexion/extension motion coincided with the flexion/extension axis of upper forearm coordinate system. The same procedure was done for pronation/supination motion. Furthermore, it was tested indirectly that there was an interaction effect between the two rotational motions. The results showed that most segment coordinate axes statistically were not consistent with the mean directions of flexion/extension and pronation/supination axes of rotation. From the results, it would be concluded that the ISB coordinate systems was proved to be a little valid for human movement analysis. There also was an effect of pronation/supination angles on flexion/extension motion.

  • Spinal deformity is a serious disease especially for teenagers and it is desirable for school children to be checked possible spinal deformity by moire photographic inspection method. The moire images of children's backs are visually inspected by doctors, which may cause misjudge because of a large amount of data they have to examine. A technique is proposed in this paper for automating this inspection by computer. Two characteristic axes, a potential symmetry axis approximating the human middle line and a principal axis representing the direction of a moire pattern are employed. Two principal axes are extracted locally on a back and their gradients against the potential symmetry axis are calculated. These gradients compose a 2D feature space and a linear discriminant function (LDF) is defined there which separates normal cases from suspicious cases. The LDF defined by 40 training, data was employed in the experiment to examine 40 test data and 77.5% of them were classified correctly. This amounts to 88.8% if the training data is included.

  • The directions of the principal strain increment, stress, and stress increment during rotation of the principal stress axes at any stress level was studied for $K_0$-consolidated clay using torsion shear apparatus with individual control of the vertical stress, the confining pressure, and the shear stress on hollow cylinder specimens under undrained and drained condition. The torsion shear tests were performed according to predetermined stress-paths, which were chosen to cover over the full range of rotation of principal stress axes. The test results indicated that the strain increment vectors at failure coincided with the stress vectors. That is, the direction of strain increment coincided with the direction of stress increment at small stress levels and with the direction of stress at higher stress levels, which indicated that the behavior of clay was transfered from elastic to plastic as the stress level was increased. The applicability of the elastoplastic theory for modeling of the behavior of clay during rotation of the principal stress axes was given.

  • When stress is beyond elastic limit or cracks occur in a reinforced concrete member subjected to axial force and biaxial bending, curvature about each principal axis of uncracked section is influenced by axial force and bending moments about both major and minor principal axes. It is mainly due to the translation and rotation of principal axes of the cross section after cracking. Recently, by considering these effects, a numerical method predicting the behavior of concrete columns subjected to axial force and biaxial bending was proposed. In this study, in order to verify the proposed numerical method and investigate the effects of cracking on the behavior of reinforced concrete columns, a series of tests were carried out for 16 tied reinforced concrete columns with 100×100 mm square and 200×100 mm rectangular sections under various loading conditions. The angle between the direction of eccentricity and the major principal axis of uncracked section were 0, 30, 40° for the square section and 0, 30, 45, 60, 90° for the rectangular section, respectively. A comparison between numerical predictions and test results shows good agreements in ultimate loads, axial force-lateral deflection relations, and lateral deflection trajectories. It is also found, in this limited investigation, that the ACI's moment magnifier method is conservative in both uniaxial and biaxial loading conditions.

  • In a practical engineering, the equivalent static analysis (E.S.A) and the response spectrum analysis (R.S.A) are generally used for the seismic analysis. The base shears obtained from the E.S.A are invariable no matter how the principal axes of building structures are specified on an analysis program while those from the R.S.A are variable. Accordingly, the designed member size may be changed by how an engineer specify the principal axes of a structure when the R.S.A is used. Moreover, the base shears in the normal direction to the excitation axis are sometimes produced even when an engineer performs a response spectrum analysis in only one direction. This tendency makes the base shear, which is used to calculate the scale-up factor, relatively small. Therefore the scale-up factor becomes larger and it results in uneconomical member sizes. To overcome these disadvantages of the R.S.A, an alternative has been proposed in this study. Three types of example structures were adapted in this study, i.e. bi-direction symmetric structure, one-direction antisymmetric structure and bi-direction antisymmetric structure. The seismic analyses were performed by rotating the principal axes of the example structures with respect to the global coordinate system. The design member forces calculated with the scale-up factor used in the practice were compared with those obtained by using the scale-up factor proposed in this study. It can be seen from this study that the proposed method for the scale-up factor can provide reliable and economical results regardless of the orientation of the principal axes of the structures.

  • The problem of an infinite anisotropic material with a crack inclined with respect to the principal material axes is analyzed. The material is subjected to uniform biaxial load along its boundary. It is assumed that the material is homogeneous, but anisotropic. By considering the effect of the horizontal load, the distribution of stresses at the crack tip is analyzed. The problem of predicting critical stress in anisotropic solids which is a subject of considerable practical importance is examined and the effect of load biaxiality is made explicitly. The present results based on the normal stress ratio theory show significant effects of biaxial load, crack inclination angle and fiber orientation on the critical stress. The analysis is performed for a wide range of the crack angles and biaxial loads.

  • Spin Hamiltonian for the paramagnetic center with a three-fold symmetry and high spin ($S{\geq}2$) multiplicity should contain the fourth order zero-field splitting (ZFS) terms. Electron magnetic resonance transition lines of the center with S = 5/2 are expected to split in a pair when the magnetic field is applied off the principal axes of ZFS, while they are superimposed when the magnetic field is applied parallel to the principal axes of ZFS. In this study we report that the transition lines of $Mn^{2+}$ centers at the three-fold symmetric sites in $LiNbO_3$, chemically equivalent but physically different, split in two due to the nonzero fourth order ZFS term.

  • Based on the shear failure mechanism, hydraulic fracturing criteria are extended to three dimensional stress state. According to the situation of the directions of borehole and major principal stress axes, three equations can be derived for three dimensional hydraulic fracturing problems. By comparing these equations, a single criterion is selected for hydraulic fracturing pressure in cohesive soils. The criterion is a function of maximum principal stress, minimum principal stress and soil parameters in UU conditions. The equation indicates that with any increase in maximim principal stress, hydraulic fracturing pressure decreases. In order to prove the integrity of the criteria, laboratory tests are performed on compacted cubical specimens using true a triaxial apparatus. The shape and direction of fractures are determined by injecting colored water after fracture initiation. It is found that the direction of fractures are perpendicular to the o1 plane.
