  • For diffusion limited cluster agglomerates the ratio of the mobility radius to the radius of gyration $R_m/R_g$ vs. N and the ratio of the mobility radius to the radius of primary particle $R_m$/a are determined using experimental data obtained with DMA-APM and tandem DMA over a range of Knudsen numbers extending into the transition region where there is a lack of data. It was found that in slip regime with the number of primary particles between 100 and 400, datapoints are found to be between the two asymptotic lines for the continuum and free molecular regimes as those datapoints are plotted in both $R_m/R_g$ vs. N and $R_m$/a vs. N.

  • Controlling particle contamination is important to increase storage capacity as the flying height of a slider in a hard disk drive decreases. Since precise detection and analysis of particles are primary steps of particle control in a HDD, many researchers have used sampling methods. In this paper, we newly designed a particle sampler and conducted performance evaluation of the sampler. Also, we conducted particle sampling from the HDD using the particle sampler and analysis of sampled particles by SEM and AES. Experimental results show that the particles generated by the slide-disk interaction mainly came from the disk surface.

  • Tobacco dust samples were collected for two times in primary and secondary process at 4 cigarette manufacturing factories(Shintanzin, Youngju, Wonju, Kwangju) and analyzed to evaluate usage as a raw material in production of reconstituted tobacco. The chemical constituents and HWS of tobacco dust were analyzed. Tobacco dust samples were partitioned by particle size using a series of screens ranging from 20 to 200 mesh. The amount of material retained in each fraction was quantified and sand content was also determined. Appreciable average amounts$(40-65\%)$ material at 4 locations were found to be larger than 60 mesh. Although the amount of material in each fraction increased to a maximum at 100 mesh and then decreased, the $\%$ sand continually increased with decreasing particle size. The chemical constituents and HWS content of tobacco dust have similar values in secondary process of 4 cigarette manufacturing factories but the those of primary process have different values according to the site of occurrence and manufacturing factories.

  • As a case study on aspect ratio behavior, Kaolin, zeolite, $TiO_2$, pozzolan and diatomaceous earth minerals are investigated using wet milling with 0.3 pai media. The grinding process using small media of 0.3 pai is suitable for current work processing applications. Primary particles with average particle size distribution D50, ${\sim}6{\mu}m$ are shifted to submicron size, D50 ${\sim}0.6{\mu}m$, after grinding. Grinding of particles is characterized by various size parameters such as sphericity as geometric shape, equivalent diameter, and average particle size distribution. Herein, we systematically provide an overview of factors affecting the primary particle size reduction. Energy consumption for grinding is determined using classical grinding laws, including Rittinger's and Kick's laws. Submicron size is obtained at maximum frictional shear stress. Alterations in properties of wettability, heat resistance, thermal conductivity, and adhesion increase with increasing particle surface area. In the comparison of the aspect ratio of the submicron powder, the air heat conductivity and the total heat release amount increase 68 % and 2 times, respectively.

  • Photo catalytic characteristics of nano-sized TiO$_2$ powder with rutile phase produced using homogeneous precipitation process at low temperatures (HPPLT) were compared with those of commercial P-25 powder by Degussa Co. The TiO$_2$ powder by HPPLT showed very higher photoactivity in the removal rate, showing lower pH values in the solution, than the P-25 powder when eliminating metal ions such as Pb and Cu from aqueous metal-EDTA solutions. This can be inferred the more rapid photo-oxidation or -reduction of metal ions from the aqueous solution, together with relatively higher efficiencies in the use of electron-hole pair formed on the surface of TiO$_2$ particle, under UV light irradiation. Also, in the view of the TiO$_2$ particle morphology, compared to the well-dispersed spherical P-25 particle, the agglomerated TiO$_2$ particle by HPPL T consists of acicular typed primary particle with the thickness ranged of 3∼7 nm, which would be more effective to the photocatalytic reactions without electron-hole recombination on the surface of the TiO$_2$ particle under the UV light irradiation. It is, therefore, thought that the higher photo activity of the rutile TiO$_2$ powder by HPPLT in the aqueous solutions resulted from having its higher specific surface area as well as acicular shape primary particle with very thin thickness.

  • Particulate matters (PM) that is generated by most diesel engine is regulated by the mass concentration measured by the conventional method it had been. Recently, Europe PMP (Particle Measurement Program) decided to start the regulation of vehicle's nano-sized particle number (PN) from the year of 2011 because of nano-particle's higher degree of harm to the human body. So firstly, the standard level of PN emission is introduced in the Euro 5/6 emissions regulation with a limit of $6{\times}10^{11}$ per km for light duty vehicle. Also KPMP(Korea Particle Measurement Program) was organized to copy quickly international technical trend. In this paper, it was investigated the nano-sized PN measurement characteristics for different particle generators between spray type and soot type. And the difference ratio between particle generators, the characteristic of PN concentration, counting efficiency and linearity was analyzed. Then, we make conclusions as followed. When particle diameter is increased, counting efficiency of two generators is decreased. Also Secondary calibration method is more higher 3% than Primary calibration method. Finally, SOF which is included in soot particles is not totally removed so it have great influence on test result of counting efficiency and linearity.

  • In this study, the mixing process of two-phase flow generated by two jets with height difference is analyzed. The primary jet is jetted on the condition of the state mixed pulverized solid particles with air. The height difference between the main jet and the secondary jet is changed into three kinds(0, 32.5, 47.5mm). The velocity vector field, concentration field and turbulent properties of solid particles are measured by using 3-Dimensional Particles Dynamics Analyzer. As the height difference of two jets through the two nozzles increases, the solid particle recirculation zone and the dense zone in the combustion chamber become large. The solid particle concentration at the center of the combustion chamber gets dense because the particle velocity remains slow due to the existence of the solid particle recirculation zone. The particle concentration in the combustion chamber can also be influenced by the hight difference of two jets.

  • We have developed a simple model for describing the non-spherical particle growth phenomena using modified 1-dimensional sectional method. In this model, we solve simultaneously particle volume and surface area conservation sectional equations which consider particles' irregularities. From the correlation between two conserved properties of sections, we can predict the evolution of the aggregates' morphology. We compared this model with a simple monodisperse-assumed model and more rigorous two dimensional sectional model. For the comparison, we simulated silica and titania particle formation and growth in a constant temperature reactor environment. This new model shows a good agreement with the detailed two dimensional sectional model in total number concentration, primary particle size. The present model can also successfully predict particle size distribution and morphology without costing very heavy computation load and memory needed for the analysis of two dimensional aerosol dynamics.

  • The primary objective of this study was to learn the effect of various sugar particle size and level on cookie spread, The effect of sugar particle size and level on sugarsnap cookie spread was studied. Three different particle sized sugars; powered sugar, granulated sugar and sanding sugar, were used for the cookie test baking with five different sugar levels; 30, 45, 60, 75 and 90% based on the weight of flour. In mixing process, 5 minutes of creaming time was used for cream making and then the specific gravity of cream was measured on the basis of each different sugar particle size and level. In the result, the specific gravity of cream was influenced by sugar particle size and sugar level. However, the specific gravity of cream had no influence on cookie dough specific gravity. Cookie spread was influenced by sugar particle size and sugar level. Greater cookie spread was obtained by decreasing sugar particle size and increasing sugar level resulted in increased spread. Therefore, selection of suitable sugar particle size and its use level can be factors in controlling spread and imparting desired packaging characteristics.

  • Characteristics of carbon soot particles generated in diffusion flames were studied. Non-sooting and sooting normal diffusion flames using propane or ethylene as fuel were selected. In the flames, soot volume fraction was measured by a thermocouple, and primary particle diameter and cluster size were analyzed by TEM photographs. The characteristics of soot particles depended on flame(non-sooting or sooting) and fuel(propane or ethylene) type. Unlike the sooting diffusion flames, particle growth and oxidation processes were clearly observed in the non-sooting diffusion flames. In the sooting diffusion flames, soot particle size was slightly changed at the flame tip.
