  • The street canyon forms the geometric unit of the built environment. The geometry makes up urban canyons and it influences the urban climate. In order to investigate the wind characteristics of urban street canyon at Dogok-dong, Gangnam-gu in Seoul, the wind direction and wind speed data were observed and analyzed by using 2-D ultra sonic and propeller wind monitor from May 5, 2010 to May 4, 2011. The results show that the prevailing wind direction was west at Station A(Military Mutual Aid Association Building), southwest at Station B(Sookmyung Girls' High School) and the wind speed of Station B was higher than Station A. There were diurnal differences about prevailing wind direction between two stations : it was westerly wind at Station A for a whole day, but at Station B only from 22 : 00 to 04 : 00. However, Station B is different from Station A at other time. At Station B, it was easterly wind from 04 : 00 to 12 : 00, southwesterly wind from 12 : 00 to 22 : 00. In terms of seasonal(except winter) frequency, the spring shows the highest frequency and fall was the next.

  • During a nuclear power plant (NPP) accident, radioactive material may be released into the surrounding environment in the form of a radioactive plume. The behavior of the radioactive plume is influenced by meteorological factors such as wind direction and speed. If the residents are evacuated to a shelter in the direction of the flow of the radioactive plume, the radiation exposure of the residents may increase, contrary to the purpose of the evacuation. To avoid such an undesirable outcome, this paper applies a big data analysis to evaluate the suitability of the shelter locations near 5 NPPs in the Republic of Korea in terms of the seasonal wind direction frequency in those areas. To this end, the wind data measured around the NPPs from 2016 to 2020 were analyzed to derive the seasonal wind direction frequency using a big data analysis. These analyses results were then used to determine how many shelters around NPPs locate in areas with prevailing wind direction per season. Then, suggestions were made on the direction for residents not to evacuate, if possible, that is, the prevailing seasonal wind directions for 5 NPPs, depending on the season in which the accident occurs.

  • High-resolution wind resources maps (maps, here after) with spatial and temporal resolutions of 100 m and 3-hours, respectively, over South Korea have been produced and evaluated for the period from July 2016 to June 2017 using Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) Post Processing (KMAPP). Evaluation of the 10 m- and 80 m-level wind speed in the new maps (KMAPP-Wind) and the 1.5 km-resolution KMA NWP model, Local Data Assimilation and Prediction System (LDAPS), shows that the new high-resolution maps improves of the LDAPS winds in estimating the 10m wind speed as the new data reduces the mean bias (MBE) and root-mean-square error (RMSE) by 33.3% and 14.3%, respectively. In particular, the result of evaluation of the wind at 80 m which is directly related with power turbine shows that the new maps has significantly smaller error compared to the LDAPS wind. Analyses of the new maps for the seasonal average, maximum wind speed, and the prevailing wind direction shows that the wind resources over South Korea are most abundant during winter, and that the prevailing wind direction is strongly affected by synoptic weather systems except over mountainous regions. Wind speed generally increases with altitude and the proximity to the coast. In conclusion, the evaluation results show that the new maps provides significantly more accurate wind speeds than the lower resolution NWP model output, especially over complex terrains, coastal areas, and the Jeju island where wind-energy resources are most abundant.

  • This study demonstrates the advantages of a shear-free structure designed to modify vertical profiles of wind speed in the atmospheric surface layer. Computational fluid dynamics(CFD) software, FLUENT is used to interpret the velocity field modification around the structure and wind turbine. The shapes of shear-free structure, installed at upstream toward prevailing wind direction, would be fences, buildings and trees, etc. According to the simulation results, it is obvious that wind shear between heights of wind turbine's blades is decreased together with a speed-up advantage. This would lead decrease of periodic wind loading caused by wind shear and power-out increase by flow uniformity and wind speed-up.

  • In accordance with Madrid and Kyoto Protocols, a 10kw wind turbine installed about 625m away from the King Sejong Station in the Antarctica has been in operation successfully. The current location of the wind turbine has different geographic surroundings from the previous candidate site considered in 2005 and that makes re-evaluation of wind resource at the current site including geographic effects necessary. Especially, strong wind flow derived by steep and complex terrain is dominant in the Antarctica so that computational flow analysis is required. The wind rose measured at the previous and current installation location are identical with strong meteorological correlation but prevailing directions of wind power density are different because of local wind acceleration due to complex terrain. Numerical analysis explains which effects brings this discordance between the two sites, and a design guideline required for additional wind turbine installation has been secured.

  • In order to investigate the offshore wind resources, the "QuikSCAT Level 3" data by the QuikSCAT satellite was analyzed from Jan 2000 to Dec 2008. QuikSCAT satellite is a specialized device for a microwave scatterometer that measures near-surface wind speed and direction under all weather and cloud conditions. Wind speed measured at 10 m above from the sea surface as extrapolated to the hub height by using the power law model. It has been found that the high wind energy prevailing in the south sea and the east sea of the Korean peninsula. From the limitation of seawater depth for piling the tower and archipelagic environment around the south sea, the west and the south-west sea are favorable to construct the large scale wind farm. Wind map and monthly variation of wind speed are investigate at the positions.

  • In order to understand the generation of the Sogcho Eddy due to the strong offshore winds, we first investigated the characteristics of winds at Sogcho, Kangnung and Samchuk, and then carried out a series of numerical experiments using the nonlinear 1 1/2-layer model. The models were forced by wind stress fields, similar in structure to the prevailing winds that a field in the east coast of Korea during the winter season. The winds were composed of the background winds $(-1\;dyne/cm^2)$ for 90 days and the local winds $(-4\;dyne/cm^2)$ for 30 days. The analysis of wind data at three stations (Sogcho, Kangnung, and Samchuk) showed that the wind was stronger in winter than in other seasons and the offshore component was much dominant. According to our numerical solutions, the Sogcho Eddy of about 200 km in diameter was generated due to the strong offshore winds prevailing in the Kangnung - Sogcho regions. The eastward propagation of the Rossby waves reflected at the western boundary resulted in the eastward meandering motion from the eastern side of the eddy.

  • In the complex terrain where local wind systems are formed, accurate understanding of regional wind variability is required for wind resource assessment. In this paper, cluster analysis based on the similarity of time-series wind vector was applied to classify wind regions with similar wind characteristics and the meteorological validity of regionalization method was evaluated. Wind regions in Jeju Island and Busan were classified using the wind resource map of Korea created by a mesoscale numerical weather prediction modeling. The evaluation was performed by comparing wind speed, wind direction, and wind variability of each wind region. Wind characteristics, such as mean wind speed and prevailing wind direction, in the same wind region were similar and wind characteristics in different wind regions were meteor-statistically distinct. It was able to identify a singular wind region at the top area of Mt. Halla using the inconsistency of wind direction variability. Furthermore, it was found that the regionalization results correspond with the topographic features of Jeju Island and Busan, showing the validity.

  • The energy demand of the world is increasing rapidly, mainly using fossil energy, which causes environmental damage. The wind is free and clean energy to solve the environmental problems. Thailand is one of the developing nations, and the majority of its energy is obtained from petroleum, natural gas and coal. The objective of this study is to test the characteristics of wind energy at Khon Kaen in Thailand. The wind measurement tools, the 3-cup anemometers to measure wind speed, and wind vanes to measure wind direction, were mounted on a wind tower mast to record wind data at the heights of 60, 90 and 120 meters above ground level (AGL) for 5 years between January 2012 and December 2016. The results show that the annual mean wind speeds were 3.79, 4.32 and 4.66 m/s, respectively. The highest mean wind speeds occurred in June, August and December, in order, and the lowest occurred in September. The majority of prevailing wind directions were from the North-East and South-West directions. The average annual wind shear coefficient was 0.297. Furthermore, five wind turbines with rated power from 0.85 to 4.5 MW were selected to estimate the wind energy output and it was found that the maximum AEP and CF were achieved from the low cut-in speed and high hub-height wind turbines. This important information will help to develop wind energy applications, such as the plan to produce electricity and the calculation of the wind load that affects tall and large structures.
