A new type of bridge superstructures referred to as Steel-Confined Prestressed Concrete Girder (SCP Girder) was developed, which is composed of concrete, steel plate, and prestressing tendon. The girder may maximize structural advantages of these components; thus, long span bridges with low height girder may be constructed. For the effective design and fabrication of the gilder, the design software program was developed and the process of fabrication established. The experimental girder designed using the program was manufactured in actual size to confirm the fabric ability of the girder. Propriety of design, structural safety, and applicability of the gilder were verified through the load test.

Ensuring the designed prestress force is very important for the safety of prestressed concrete bridge. The loss of prestress force in tendon could significantly reduce load carrying capacity of the structure. In this study, an automated prestress-loss monitoring system for prestressed concrete girder using PZT-interface and wireless impedance sensor node is presented. The following approaches are carried out to achieve the objective. Firstly, wireless impedance sensor nodes are designed for automated impedance-based monitoring technique. The sensor node is mounted on the high-performance Imote2 sensor platform to fulfill high operating speed, low power requirement and large storage memory. Secondly, a smart PZT-interface designed for monitoring prestress force is described. A linear regression model is established to predict prestress-loss. Finally, a system of the PZT-interface interacted with the wireless sensor node is evaluated from a lab-scale tendon-anchorage connection of a prestressed concrete girder.

The Prestressed concrete girder bridges(PSC girder bridges), consisting of prestressed concrete girders and cast-in-place deck slabs, are sensitive to creep and shrinkage of concrete. Shrinkage and creep produce additional internal forces md deformations in PSC girder bridges. The long-term behavior of the PSC girder bridges depends on time-dependent properties of materials, amount of prestressing, methods and sequences of construction and age at loading. The purpose of this study is to predict the long-term behavior of PSC girder bridge. For this purpose, Computer program for Time-dependent analysis of PSC girder bridge has been developed. thereafter, Time-dependent analysis using developed computer program was carried out about 3-span continuous PSC girder bridges. Various construction timing sequences were used for parametric study.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate economics by the Life Cycle cost(LCC) analysis of Steel Box Girder and Prestressed Box Girder bridge types. The study has been performed as a case study. A questionnaire survey for the repair and replacement cycle has been done in order to predict operation and maintenance costs. For LCC analysis and comparison, the present value technique is used. The results of this study are summarized as follows: (1) A LCC analysis model of Steel Box Girder and Prestressed Box Girder bridge types is suggested through a case study. (2) The repair and replacement cycle of elements of them are investigated using a questionnaire survey. (3) As a result of LCC case study, the type of Prestressed Box Girder bridge is analyzed more economic than Steel Box Girder.
Holed-Incrementally Prestressed Concrete (H-IPC) girders are designed using the following new design concepts. At first, web openings reduce the self-weight of the girder, and also diffuse prestressing tendon anchorages. The reduced end anchoring forces decrease the web thickness of the end sections. Additionally, precast technology help to improve the quality of concrete and to reduce the construction period at the site. For experimentally verification, two 50 m full-scale H-IPC girders are manufactured with different concrete strength of 55 MPa and 80 MPa. The safety, stiffness, ductility, serviceability and crack development of H-IPC girder are measured and compared with each other for different strengths. Both girders show enough strength to carry live load and good stiffness to satisfy the design criteria. The experimental result shows the advantages of using high strength concrete and adopting precast girder. The test data can be used as a criterion for safety control and maintenance of the H-IPC girder.

Ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) is recognized as a promising material in future civil engineering projects due to its outstanding mechanical and durability properties. However, the lack of local UHPC materials and official standards, especially for prestressed UHPC structures, has limited the application of UHPC. In this research, a large-scale prestressed bridge girder composed of nonproprietary UHPC is produced and investigated. This work has two objectives to develop the mixing procedure required to create UHPC in large batches and to study the flexural behavior of the prestressed girder. The results demonstrate that a sizeable batch of UHPC can be produced by using a conventional concrete mixing system at any precast factory. In addition, incorporating local aggregates and using conventional mixing systems enables regional widespread use. The flexural behavior of a girder made by this UHPC is investigated including flexural strength, cracking pattern and development, load-deflection curve, and strain and neutral axis behaviors through a comprehensive bending test. The experimental data is similar to the theoretical results from analytical methods based on several standards and recommendations of UHPC design.

Prestressed concrete (PSC) I-type girders have been used for span length around up to 40 m in domestic region. PSC girders are very cost effective girder type and extending their lengths more than 50 m will bring large benefit in cost. A new design method was proposed by combining two notable design concept in order to extend the applicable span length in this study. First of all, several numbers of openings was introduced in the girder web, and half of the anchorage devices were moved into the openings. In this way, large compressive stress developed at end zone was reduced, and the portion of design load coming from self-weight was reduced as well. Secondly, prestressing force was introduced in the girder not once at the initial stage, but through multiple loading stages. A full scale girder with the length of 50 m with the girder depth of 2 m was fabricated, and a flexural test was conducted in order to verify the performance of newly developed girder. Test results showed that the new holed web design concept can provide a way to design girders longer than 50 meters with the girder height of 2 m.

Prestressed concrete girder(PSC girder) bridges have been used widely at the railway as well as highway because they are great in the functional and economical efficiency. Also they have the advantage of convenience of design and construction. However it could be easily verified that the section of PSC girder is excessive design, which has much redundancy against design loads. Thus, in this paper the formulation of the optimum design for PSC girder railway bridge is suggested and dominant design variables and constraints are inquired as performing the optimum design. In order to effective optimum design, design variables are formulated as PSC girder sectional dimension and girder space. The objective is adopted as total cost of PSC girder railway bridge. Also, constraints are formulated according to Korean railway design specification and considering construction-ability such as PS anchorage and girder space. Using the proposed optimum design system, optimum PSC girder railway bridge design has been performed. And from the results of analysis it is suggested to denote the optimum section which satisfies the structural safety and economical efficiency all together.

The existing AASHTO Standard Specification have some inadequacies in expressing wheel load distribution of bridge which has specific shape of curved bridge instead of straight bridge. Thus, this research presented the finite element analysis and modelling technique of prestressed concrete girder bridge having curved slab and the expression of wheel load distribution was suggested as the ratio of bending moment utilizing the result of finite element analysis of prestressed concrete girder bridge having cowed slab. The considered parameter of girder distribution expression is the curvature of slab, span length, girder space, cross beam space and number of lanes. Though the suggested girder distribution expression is generally underestimated below AASHTO Standard Specification, once the curvature of slab increases, the suggested expression gets larger than AASHTO LRFD Standard Specification.
