  • A new type of bridge superstructures referred to as Steel-Confined Prestressed Concrete Girder (SCP Girder) was developed, which is composed of concrete, steel plate, and prestressing tendon. The girder may maximize structural advantages of these components; thus, long span bridges with low height girder may be constructed. For the effective design and fabrication of the gilder, the design software program was developed and the process of fabrication established. The experimental girder designed using the program was manufactured in actual size to confirm the fabric ability of the girder. Propriety of design, structural safety, and applicability of the gilder were verified through the load test.

  • The applicability of the concept of IPC(Incrementally Prestressed Concrete) girder which effectively reduces the depth of the conventional prestressed girders by introducing prestress in two different stages is theoretically reviewed in this research. Expressions on top and bottom stresses resulting from different loading stages are presented. Beneficial effects of IPC girder compared with those traditional prestressed girders are evaluated by investigating the girder depth for the same span or girder span for the same girder depth. Parking structures and ware house structures which need relatively longer span and are subject to large live loads are considered in comparison. It was found that the single or double tee slab designed by IPC concept could be built upto 50% longer in its span and upto 45% less in its depth compared to those of traditionally prestressed single or double tee slabs. In addition, the amount of prestressing tendons could be reduced.

  • The prestressed concrete (PSC) technology that was first developed by Freyssinet has significantly improved over the past century in terms of materials and structural design in order to build longer, slender, and more economic structures. The application of prestressing method in structures, which is determined by the pre-tension or post-tension processes, is also affected by the surrounding conditions such as the construction site, workforce skills, and local transportation regulations. This study proposes a prestressed concrete girder design based on a hybrid segment concept. The adopted approach combines both pre-tension and post-tension methods along a simple span bridge girder. The girder was designed using newly developed 2400 MPa PS strands and 60 MPa high-strength concrete. The new concept and high strength materials allowed longer span, lower girder depth, less materials, and slender design without affecting the lateral stability of the girder. In order to validate the applicability of the proposed hybrid prestressed segments girder, a full-scale 35 m girder was fabricated, and experimental tests were performed under various fatigue and static loading conditions. The experimental results confirmed the feasibility of the proposed long-span girder as its performance meets the railway girder standards. In addition, the comparison between the measured load-displacement curve and the simulation results indicate that simulation analysis can predict the behavior of hybrid segments girders.

  • A fatigue analysis procedure for prestressed concrete composite girder bridges is established, which includes the time-dependent effects of component materials. The procedure can take into account the movement of neutral axis depth as crack develops and give quite good agreement with experimental results available. It is also assured that Korean Standard prestressed concrete composite girder has enough fatigue resistance. The procedure in this paper gives a way to express the fatigue capacity of prestressed concrete beams in the form of S-N curve, which can be utilized under variable amplitude fatigue load.

  • Prestressed composite girder bridges with concrete infilled steel tube at negative flexural moment region takes the advantages provided due to the interactive reaction in the steel tube and concrete interface layer, enhancing local buckling resistance and the concrete strength provided by the lateral confining effect of concrete. Two beams were tested to examine ultimate behaviors of prestressed composite girder bridges subjected to negative flexural moment. The experimental observations of the Prestressed composite girder bridges subjected to positive flexural moment are investigated and compared to the numerical results obtained by sectional analysis method, and 1-D. and 3-D. finite element analysis methods.

  • The goal of this study is to develop an equivalent fatigue load model for prestressed concrete composite girder bridges in Korea. To meet this goal, the probabilistic characteristics of traffics which cause fatigue damage in bridges are properly modeled. An equivalent fatigue load inodel for prestressed concrete composite girder bridges with constant. amplitude and frequency is established. The model proposed in this paper is very simple to use and gives fairly good results.

  • The existing AASHTO Standard Specification have some inadequacies in expressing wheel load distribution of bridge which has specific shape of curved bridge instead of straight bridge. Thus, this research presented the finite element analysis and modelling technique of prestressed concrete girder bridge having curved slab and the expression of wheel load distribution was suggested as the ratio of bending moment utilizing the result of finite element analysis of prestressed concrete girder bridge having cowed slab. The considered parameter of girder distribution expression is the curvature of slab, span length, girder space, cross beam space and number of lanes. Though the suggested girder distribution expression is generally underestimated below AASHTO Standard Specification, once the curvature of slab increases, the suggested expression gets larger than AASHTO LRFD Standard Specification.

  • A hybrid prestressed segmental concrete (HPSC) girder utilizing low carbon materials was developed in this paper. This paper introduces the hybrid prestressing concept of pre-tensioning the center segment and assembling all segments by post-tensioning, as well as the development process of the low carbon HPSC girder. First, an optimized mix proportion of 60 MPa high strength concrete containing high volume blast furnace slag was developed, then its mechanical properties and durability characteristics were evaluated. Second, the mechanical properties of 2,400 MPa high strength prestressing strands and the transfer length characteristics in pre-tensioned prestressed concrete beams were evaluated. Third, using those low carbon materials and the hybrid prestressing concept, the HPSC girders were manufactured, and their structural performance was evaluated. A 30-m long HPSC girder for highway bridges and a 35-m long HPSC girder for railway bridges were designed, manufactured, and structurally confirmed as having sufficient strength and safety. Finally, five 35-m long HPSC girders were successfully applied to an actual railway bridge for the first time.

  • This Paper deals with the analysis of both unstrengthened and strengthened prestressed concrete girder bridges. Finite element method is utilized to perform the analysis of superstructures. Based on the grillage method of analysis. emphasis is Placed on the modeling techniques for structures. The conventional grillage method of analysis is modif'=ed so that the interaction between the slab and gilder behaviors can be taken into account in the analysis A Prototype of simply supported prestressed I-type girder bridge is selected for the analysis. The results of numerical analyses are compared with those of load test. The results of analysis indicate that the proposed method of analysis gives more realistic response of bridges than the conventional grillage method.

  • The use of high strength concrete in the fabrication and construction of prestressed concrete beam bridges can result in the increase of girder spacings for standard shapes, as well as the increase of span lengths. The increase of girder spacings corresponds to the reduction of the required number of girders. This study shows that the use of high strength concrete make prestressed concrete beam bridges the economical alternative to any other bridge types. Also, this study has the purpose of giving aids to design of prestressed concrete beam. To achieve this purpose this study provides the plots resulting from research on relationships between the concrete strength of prestressed concrete beam, girder spacing and the number of strands in various span lengths.
