Experimental Study on Flow Patterns and Pressure Drop Characteristics of Ice Slurry in Small Size Pipe (2) (소구경 배관내 아이스슬러리의 유동형상 및 압력강하 특성에 관한 실험적 연구(2))

  • Pressure drop were experimentally investigated for ice slurry flowing in the acrylic pipes with inner diameter of 24 mm. Ice slurry was made from 6.5% ethylene glycol-water solution, and the pipes is consisted of horizontal, vertical (upward and downward) and $90^{\circ}$ elbow pipe. The ice Packing factor (IPF) and the flow rate of the experiments were varied from 0 to 30% and from 5 to 70kg/min respectively The measured pressure drop in various pipe positions were compared with those for the solution flow (IPF=0). The pressure drop was larder than that for solution flows as the IPF increased when the flow rate was low or very high. Sharp increases in pressure drop were observed for the cases when IPF is more than 70% in horizontal and vertical pipes, whereas the pressure drop increased with the IPF simultaneously in an elbow pipe.

  • The functions of the plug valve are the control of flow rate as well closing and opening pipe lines. Analyses on the flow characteristics in plug valve port are required to improve the performance and safety at severe operating conditions such as high-pressure and high-temperature. In this study, numerical analyses are carried out with varying the opening rate (fraction of the full open to close) of the valve and the shapes of valve Uk: straight, convex, concave and mixed shapes. The parameters influencing the flow characteristics in the valve are the discharge coefficient( $C_v$) and the resistance coefficient( K). Therefore, the distributions of static pressure, velocity vector and stream lines are investigated, and $C_v$ and K are calculated in each opening rate and shape. In case of full open, the static pressure passed through the valve port has almost been recovered. However, in case of other opening rates, the pressure does not permanently regained due to pressure drop leading to loss. This phenomenon in each shape of the valve shows the different behaviors. Calculation results show that the mixed shape has the best flow attribute.

  • The Navier-Stokes equations are solved to study the flow characteristics of a micro viscous pump. The viscous micropump is consisted of a stationary disk with a spiral shaped channel and a rotating disk. A simple geometrical model for the tip clearance is proposed and validated by comparing computed flow rate with corresponding experimental data. Present numerical solutions show satisfactory agreement with the corresponding experimental data. The tip clearance effect is found to become significant as the rotational speed increases. As the pressure load increases, a reversed flow region is seen to form near the stationary disk. The height of the channel is shown to be optimized in terms of the flow rate for a given rotational speed and pressure load. The optimal height of the channel becomes small as the rotational speed decreases or the pressure load increases. The flow rate of the pump is found to be in proportion to the width of channel.

  • A cylindrical constant volume combustion chamber was used to investigate the flow characteristics at spark plug and the combustion characteristics of inhomogeneous charge methane-air mixture under several parameters. The flow characteristics such as mean velocity and turbulence intensity was analyzed by hot wire anemometer. Combustion pressure development measured by piezoelectric pressure transducer was used to investigate the effect of initial charge pressure, excess air ratio and ignition times on combustion pressure and combustion duration. Mean velocity and turbulence intensity had the maximum value at 200 or 300ms and then decreased to beneath 0.05m/s gradually at 3 seconds. Second mixture is accompanied by an increase in the combustion rate, and that the higher the mass which is added in the second stage injection, the faster the burn rate.

  • It is well known that an automotive muffle strongly influences engine efficiency and noise reduction. The performance of a muffler system is determined by the geometrical parameters such as the relative location of an inlet and outlet pipe size and cross sectional geometry of a chamber. In this study numerical analysis was performed to examine the flow characteristics in the simple automotive muffler for the variation of volumetric rate and offset. The computational grid generation was carried out. The RNG k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model was applied. To provide the boundary condition for numerical analysis the experimental measurement wes carried out. As a result of this study we could understand that there was a recirculation flow inside muffler and pressure loss depends on the variation of volumetric rate and offset.

  • Generally, the flow hunting is observed in almost all of the orifice meters but the intensity of the flow hunting is different at each metering system. So, we were getting some Questions as follows; why such a difference occurs and whether it influence to metering error rate or not. To investigate the flow hunting characteristics, we are trying to examine the flow characteristics around the orifice meter when the transient flow or pressure is generated at after the PCV(Pressure Control Valve) by 3D CFD method. And we have compared numerical results with experimental results at M - PCV station in order to clarify the relations with both the metering-pipeline diameter and flow rate. Finally, we can show some major factors influencing to the flow hunting and propose some correcting scheme of the flow hunting equation.

  • The effects of swirl chamber's diameter and length on injector's dynamic characteristics were investigated through an experimental study. A mechanical pulsator was installed in front of the manifold of a swirl injector which produces pressure oscillations in the feed line. Pressure in the manifold, liquid film thickness in the orifice and the pressure in the orifice were measured in order to understand the dynamic characteristic of the simplex swirl injector with varying geometry. A direct pressure measuring method (DPMM) was used to calculate the axial velocity of the propellant in the orifice and the mass flow rate through the orifice. These measured and calculated values were analyzed to observe the amplitude and phase differences between the input value in the manifold and the output values in the orifice. As a result, a phase-amplitude diagram was obtained which exhibits the injector's response to certain pressure fluctuation inputs. The mass flow rate was calculated by the DPMM and measured directly through the actual injection. The effect of mean manifold pressure change was insignificant with the frequency range of manifold pressure oscillation used in this experiment. Mass flow rate was measured with the variation of injector's geometries and amplitude of the mass flow rate was observed with geometry and pulsation frequency variation. It was confirmed that the swirl chamber diameter and length affect an injector's dynamic characteristics. Furthermore, the direction of geometry change for achieving dynamic stability in the injector was suggested.

  • Electro-rheological(ER) fluids are suspensions which show an abrupt increase in rheological properties under electric fields. The rheological response is very rapid and reversible when the electric field is imposed and/or removed. Therefore, there are many practical applications using the ER fluids. The purpose of the present study is to examine the flow characteristics of electro-rheological fluids. The field-dependent yield stress are obtained from experimental investigation on the Bingham property of the ER fluid. Then the steady relationshup between pressure drop and flow rate of the ERF was two fixed parallel-plates was measured under application of an electric fields. The electrical and rheological properties of zeolite based electro-rheological fluids were reported.

  • A numerical study for a two dimensional multi-jet with crossflow of the spent fluid has been carried out. Three different distributions of mass-flow rate at 5 jet exits were assumed to see their effects upon the flow characteristics, especially in the jet-flow region. For each distribution, various Reynolds numbers ranging from laminar to turbulent flows were considered. Calculations drew the following items as conclusion. 1) The development of the free jets issued from downstream jets was hindered by the crossflow formed due to jets. Consequently, the free jet was developed into the channel flow without any evident symptom of impingement jet flow characteristics 2) The crossflow induced the pressure gradient along the cross section of jet exits and the value of the pressure gradient increased as going downstream. The crossflow generated also the turbulent kinetic energy as it collied with the downstream jets. 3) The skin friction coefficient along the impingement plate was affected more by the distribution of mass flow rate at jet exits rather than by the Reynolds number. The skin friction coefficient was inversely proportional to the square root of the Reynolds number, regardless of flow regime when a fully developed flow was formed in the jet flow region. 4) The distribution of the skin friction coefficient along the impingement plate was found to be controlled by adjusting the distribution of mass flow rate at jet exits.

Properties of AlSi etching using the MERIE type reactor (MERIE형 반응로를 이용한 AlSi의 식각 특성)

  • The AlSi etching process using the MERIE type reactor carried out with different process parameters such as C1$_{2}$ and N$_{2}$ gas flow rate, RF power and chamber pressure. The etching characteristics were evaluated in terms of etch rate, selectivity, uniformity and etched profile. As the N2 gas flow rate is increased, the AlSi etch rate is decreased and uniformity has remained constant within .+-.5%. The etch rate is increased and uniformity is decreased, according to increment of the C1$_{2}$ gas flow rate, RF power and chamber pressure. Selective etching of TEOS with respect to AlSi is decreased as the RF power is increased while it is increased by increment of the C1$_{2}$ gas flow rate and chamber pressure, on the other hand, selective etching of photoresist with respect to AlSi is increased by increment of the C1$_{2}$ gas flow rate and chamber pressure, it is decreased as the N$_{2}$ gas flow rate is increased.
