The objectives of this study was to investigate the spray characteristics of single spray and twin spray in the overlap region such as mean axial velocity, mean radial velocity, mean droplet size and probability density function of droplet size. A phase doppler anemometer was used as the measurement system for droplet size and velocity. In case of single spray, injection pressure was varied from 0.2MPa to 0.7MPa. Mean axial velocity, mean radial velocity and droplet size were decreased as the distance below nozzle tip was increased. In case of twin spray, the spray characteristics were measured by varying the distance between two nozzles from 127mm to 155mm. In the overlap region, the boundary of the overlap region was determined by obtaining the distribution of mean axial and radial velocity. Droplet size was increased as the distance from nozzle tip was increased. It was found that the distribution of droplet size for twin spray in the overlap region was different to single spray.

In this study, two low-swirl nozzles with the same SN (Swirl Number) but different mass ratio (m) of the core part and the swirler part were designed to perform an atmospheric pressure combustion test. For each nozzle, a combustion test was conducted according to the adiabatic flame temperature, and the flame structure, emissions, and combustion instability mode were identified. Although the flame structure was significantly different, the CO emission was similar, and the NOx emission was also more related to combustion dynamics than the flame structure. Combustion dynamics and NOx emission were identified while adjusting the convection delay time by changing the position of the fuel injection nozzle. It was confirmed that when the convection delay time is in the region of (3+4n)/4T±1/4T (n=0,1,2,...), the combustion instability is strong, and in the opposite case, the combustion instability is very weak.
Particulate matters (PM) which are collected into a diesel particulate filter (DPF) system have to be periodically removed by thermal oxidation. In this report, we fabricated an electrohydrodynamic-assisted pressure-swirl nozzle to spray diesel droplets finer. Atomization performance of the nozzle was evaluated using both experimental and numerical methods. Two types of nozzle designs, the charge induction type and the charge injection type, were tested. While the former generated diesel droplets of $400\;{\mu}m$ at an applied electric potential over 10 kV, the latter presented the droplets smaller than $23\;{\mu}m$ at an applied electric potential of 8 kV. The numerical simulation results showed that the reduced size of droplets caused higher evaporation of droplets and therefore the increased temperature, which would eventually increase the regeneration performance of the DPF system.

Experimental study on combustion characteristics of double swirl coaxial injectors has been conducted for the assessment of critical injector design parameters. A reusable, unielement thrust chamber has been fabricated with a water-cooled copper nozzle. Two principal design parameters. a swirl angle and a recess length, have been investigated through hot firing tests for the understanding of their effects on high pressure combustion. Clearly, both parameters considerably affect the combustion efficiency, dynamics and hydraulic characteristics of an injector. Internal mixing of propellants in a recess region increases combustion efficiency along with the increase of a pressure drop required for flowing the same amount of mass flow rates. It is concluded that pressure buildup due to flame can be released by the increase of LOx flow axial momentum or the reduction of a recess length. Dynamic pressure measurements of the thrust chamber show varied dynamic behaviors depending on injector configurations.
In this study, numerical analysis was performed for 150kW arc heater and inflow around specimen was studied. Pressure, voltage, etc. were similar to experimental data, however efficiency was over estimated. In order to correct efficiency, swirl effect and modified radiative heat flux using configuration factor were considered. It was shown that Swirl had little effect on efficiency although radiative heat flux played an important role on decreasing the efficiency of arc heater. In addition, non-equilibrium analysis that plasma flows moves from an arc heater's nozzle to a specimen were performed.
This paper deals with the experimental study on the flow characteristics in straight flow can type combustor which has been used for high pressure ratio gas turbine combustor. The author has investigated the effects of swirl number and secondary air hole arrays in axial position on the flow characteristics by adopting the tuft method and 5-Hole Pilot Tube. From these experiments, as the swirl number increases, the results obtained is that the area of recirculation zone becomes wide and the position of vortex-core region approaches to the near of fuel nozzle in the model combustor. The most favourable penetration is obtained when secondary air jet is introduced through the air holes distributed in the form of paralled two rows in axial position of model combustor.

Experimental study on combustion characteristics of double swirl coaxial injectors has been conducted for the assessment of critical injector design parameters. A reusable, subscale thrust chamber has been fabricated with a water-cooled copper nozzle. Two different configurations of injectors have been tested for the understanding of the effects of recess length on high pressure combustion. Clearly, the recess length drastically affects the combustion efficiency and hydraulic characteristics of an injector. Internal mixing of propellants in an injector with recess number of two increases a combustion efficiency and reveals sound combustion although a pressure drop required for the same amount of mass flow rates increases compared with an injector of recess number of one.
Effects of orifice diameter, operating angle and swirl chamber distance were examined to study a reasonable distribution pattern on the maximum available travel distance in the triple nozzle system. The results of the study were as follows; 1. Discharge rate was increased with increase of orifice diameter, and a quadratic line for the 1st nozzle and linear lines for the 2nd or the 3rd nozzle. 2. The operating angle of $15^{\circ}$ had showed the maximum available travel distance, and 17m in orifice diameter of 3.0mm and operating pressure of $24.5{\times}10^5pa$ ($25Kg/cm^2$). 3. Nozzle setting methods (reference Table 6.) for improvement of uniformity of deposit distribution were varied depending on the size of orifice diameter of the 1st nozzle, nevertheless coefficients of uniformity were improved about 6 percents. 4. Adjustment of the swirl chamber distance of the 2nd nozzle could improve the minimum area of about 6m from the triple nozzle.

Recently, according to increase in the requirement of electric power, a thermoelectric power plant equipped with pulverized coal combustion system is highly valued, because coal has abundant deposits and a low price compared with others. For efficient use of coal fuel, most of plant makers are studying to improve combustion performance and flame stability, and reduce pollutant emission. One of these studies is how to control the profile of particle injection and velocity dependant on coal nozzle. Basically, a mixed flow of gas and particle in coal nozzle is required to have appropriate injection and concentration distribution at exit to achieve flame stability and low pollutant, but it is very difficult to obtain that without help of a coal separating device within nozzle. In this study, each distribution of air and coal flow rate is measured for the coal nozzle with coal separator developed by us. The coal concentration at exit is various according to inlet swirl values and positions of coal separator. Also pressure drop is measured for various operating conditions of this nozzle. From these results, we can find the separation characteristic of new developed coal separator, and select proper operation range of coal nozzle. When this coal nozzle is applied to actual plant, these investigations will be very useful to confirm the shape of coal separator to have efficient particle injection.
The effects of swirl and combustion parameters on the performance and emission in a turbo-charged D.I. diesel engine of the displacement 9.4L were studied experimentally in this paper. Generally the swirl in the combustion process of diesel engine promotes mixing of the injection fuel and the intake air. It is a major factor to improve the engine performance because the fuel consumption and NO$_{x}$ is trade-off according to the high temperature and high pressure of combustion gas in a turbocharged D.I. diesel engine, it's necessary to thinking over the intake and exhaust system, the design of combustion bowl and so on. In order to choose a turbocharger of appropriate capacity. As a result of steady flow test, when the swirl ratio is increased, the mean flow coefficient is decreased, whereas the gulf factor is increased. Also, through engine test its can be expected to meet performance and emissions by optimizing the main parameter's; the swirl ratio is 2.43, injection timing is BTDC 13$^{\circ}$ CA, compression ratio is 16, combustion bowl is re-entrant 5$^{\circ}$, nozzle hole diameter is $\Phi$0.28*6, turbocharger is GT40 model which are compressor A/R 0.58 and turbine A/R 1.19.
