Cardiopulmonary resuscitation(CPR) is performed by artificial ventilation and thoracic compression for the patient under emergent situation to maintain at least the minimum level of respiration and blood circulation for life survival. Quality of the pre-hospital CPR not only significantly affects the patient's survival rate but also minimizes side effects caused by CPR. Good quality CPR requires monitoring respiration, however, traditional respiratory air flow transducers cannot be used because the transducer elements are located on the flow axis. The present study developed a new technique with no physical object on the flow stream but enabling the air flow measurement and easily incorporated with the CPR devices. A turbulence chamber was formed in the middle of the respiratory tube by locally enlarging the cross-sectional area where the flow related turbulence was generated inducing energy loss which was in turn converted into pressure difference. The turbulence chamber was simply an empty enlarged air space, thus no physical object was placed on the flow stream, but still the flow rate could be evaluated. Both inspiratory and expiratory flows were obtained with symmetric measurement characteristics. Quadratic curve fitting provided excellent calibration formula with a correlation coefficient>0.999 (P<0.0001) and the mean relative error<1 %. The present results can be usefully applied to accurately monitor the air flow rate during CPR.
A continuous, fast, and convenient experimental method, replacing recent tests such as standard oedometer or self weight consolidation test, is needed for the determination of the consolidation behavior of unformed soft soils. This study introduced the seepage induced fast consolidation test using the flow pump technique. It can obtain the consolidation characteristics of unformed soft soils conveniently and fast. The seepage induced consolidation test apparatus consists of a modified triaxial cell, differential pressure transducer, flow pump, and displacement transducer. The test continuously proceeds with starting seepage forces induced consolidation, loading consolidation, and permeability test on the same sample. In addition, this test result was compared with the standard oedometer test result to make this method valid. From this study it was found that this method is a convenient and time saving effective method for obtaining data required for calculation of consolidation settlement of unformed soft soils.

The effect of liquid confined in a pipe on elastic waves propagating in the pipe wall was studied theoretically and experimentally. The axisymmetric motion of the wave was modeled with the cylindrical membrane shell theory. The liquid pressure satisfying the axisymmetric wave equation was included in the governing equation as a radial load. The phase speed of the wave propagating in the axial direction was calculated, accounting for the apparent mass of the liquid. Experiments were performed in a pipe equipped with ring-shaped, piezoelectric transducers that were used for transmitting and receiving axisymmetric elastic waves in the pipe wall. The measured wave speeds were compared with the analytical ones. This work demonstrates the feasibility of using pipe waves for the determination of the density and, eventually, the flow rate of the liquid in a pipe.
Dynamic flow characteristics of a counter-flow vortex tube is investigated using hot-wire and piezoelectric transducer (PZT) measurements. The experimental study is conducted over a range of cold air outlet ratios (Y=0.3, 0.5, 0.7, and 1.0) and inlet pressure 0.15 MPa. Temperatures are measured at the cold air outlet and along the vortex tube wall. Hot-wire is located at cold outlet and PZT is installed at inner vortex tube by mounting at throttle valve. The cold outlet temperature results show that the swirl flow of vortex tube is not axisymmetric. The hot-wire and PZT results show that there exist two distinct kinds of frequency, low frequency periodic fluctuations and high frequency periodic fluctuations. It is found that the low frequency fluctuation is consistent with the Helmholtz frequency and the high frequency fluctuation is strongly related with precession oscillation.

In an attempt to improve adhesion strength between glass and metal due to use of Pb-free solder as a sealant between glass and metal in the manufacturing process of vacuum insulation window glass to maintain the vacuum volume, ultrasonic energy is often applied during the process of Pb-free sealing. In this study, we propose an ultrasonic vibrator with a 4 mm end tip radius which performs resonance frequency of 60 kHz and 14 um or higher vibration displacement. A frequency variation due to applied pressure on piezo disks, which was excluded in the computer simulation, was verified experimentally, and we have demonstrated a 17 um vibration displacement at 50 V input through the performance test of a vibrator constructed with our specification.

The outstanding mechanical property of optical fiber and the merits of acoustic emission sensing technique are unified for novel sensor system. The generated ultrasonic wave from piezoelectric generator are propagated along the optical fiber and also sensed. The propagated wave can be influence by external pressure on the optical fiber or environmental circumstance. The optical fiber sensor using ultrasonic wave has advantages compare with existing sensor system. In this study, the sensitivity of the optical fiber sensor is experimentally investigated. As the applications of the optical fiber sensor system using piezoelectric ultrasonic waves, the point load on the optical fiber is measured and the monitoring system for the void fraction of two phase flows is developed. The experimental results show the linear relationship between sensed voltage and void fraction.

Most of significant defects in the pressure boundaries of nuclear power plant we re dispositioned to be monitored periodically every inservice inspection. Due to the difficulty of the defect sizing during operation, it is necessary to develope the continuous flaw monitoring techniques. The Tip Diffraction method, specifically speaking, spot seems to be suitable for flaw monitoring. The optimum conditions of selecting the transducer were 3.5 MHz and 45-57 degree according to compatibility with the defect height. The effective calculation of the defect height was to assume the fact that the incident beam is parallel. This method would be supplemented to ASME method about the defect characterization for the surface flaw.

Ultrasonic flowmeters have more advantages than the conventional method using pressure-difference. In these reasons, many advanced nations are already selling the commercial model. In RIST, we have been developed ultrasonic gas flow meter for the localization since a project was been contracted with POSCO in 1997. This paper describes a new ultrasonic gas flowmeter. This ultrasonic gas flowmeter is developed for accurate measurement of gases in a harsh environmental conditions. It is especially suited for measuring LDG. COG, BFG gases produced in iron & steel making process. In this study, we had developed the commercial model about the first tested model and applied a completed system to the POSCO gas line. Its performance has been proven by extensive field tests for several months in POSCO, iron & steel making company.

The ultrasonic cutting method is which cutting by applying high frequency vibrational energy into specific area at constant pressure. Ultrasonic cutting is consisted of power supply, transducer, booster and cutting tool. Precise designing is required since each part's shape, length and mass can affect driving frequency and vibration mode. This paper focused to cutting tool design, its length L was set by calculating vibration equation. And the value of the shape parameter a was diversified as the integral multiple and the result of 40,189Hz the analysis of Modal was shown in the length 30mm of the result of performance b in the 11th mode Also by performing harmonic response analysis, the frequency response result was 40,189Hz, which was similar to modal analysis result.

This paper presents a unique pressure sensor design for environmental applications. The design uses a new geometry for a multi bossed beam-membrane structure with a SOI (silicon-on-insulator) substrate and a mechanical transducer. The Intellisuite MEMS CAD design tool was used to build and analyze the structure with FEM (finite element modeling). The working principle of the multi bossed beam structure is explained. FEM calculations show that a sensing diaphragm with Mises stress can provide superior linear response compared to a stress-free diaphragm. These simulation results are validated by comparing the estimated deflection response. The results show that, the sensitivity is enhanced by using both the novel geometry and the SOI substrate.
