  • In recent years, it is very important that hydrogen storage system is safe for user in any circumstances in case of crash and fire. Because the hydrogen vehicle usually carry high pressurized cylinders, it is necessary to do safety design for fire. The Global Technical Regulation (GTR) has been enacted for localized and engulfing fire test. High pressure hydrogen storage system of fuel cell electrical vehicles are equipped with Thermal Pressure Relief Device (TPRD) installed in pressured tank cylinder to prevent the explosion of the tank during a fire. TPRDs are safety devices that perceive a fire and release gas in the pressure tank cylinder before it is exploded. In this paper, we observed the localized and engulfing behavior of tank safety, regarding the difference of size and types of the tanks in accordance with GTR.

  • It is well known that earth pressure on the cylindrical open caisson and cylindrical retaining wall of a shaft is less than that at-rest and in plane strain condition because of the horizontal and vertical arching effects due to wall displacement and stress relief. In order to examine the earth pressure distribution of a cylindrical wall, model tests were performed in dry sand for the care of constant wall displacement with depth. Model test apparatus which can control wall displacement, wall friction, and wall shape ratio was developed. The effects of various factors that influence earth pressure acting on the cylindrical retaining wall of a shaft were investigated.

  • Leakage in water supply system can cause water resources loss in addition to the water quality degradation. In this research, leakage reduction after establishment of a block system in the area with leakage rate of 69.0 % was investigated using EPANET simulation. The average water pressure for the research area was $5.17kgf/cm^2$ which was relatively high, and several sites were deviated from recommended water pressure ranges(i.e., 1.5 ~ $7.1kgf/cm^2$). However, the average water pressure in the area was reduced to 3.81 and $3.49kgf/cm^2$ after the introduction of block system with a water pressure relief valve(PRV) setting of 3.0 and $2.5kgf/cm^2$, respectively. Under the installation of a PRV with regulating pressure of $2.5kgf/cm^2$, the predicted leakage was reduced from $4,420.3m^3/d$ to $3,028.1m^3/d$, which was equivalent to the leakage reduction from 31.0 % to 23.5 %.

  • In this paper we propose and theoretically analyze a monolithic multiparametric sensor consisting of a superstructure of surface-relief waveguide Bragg gratings (WBGs), a micro-machined diaphragm, and a cantilever beam. Diaphragms of two different configurations, namely circular and square, are designed and analyzed separately for pressure measurement. The square diaphragm is then selected for further study, since it shows relatively higher sensitivity compared to the circular one, as it incurs more induced stress when any pressure is applied. The cantilever beam with a proof mass is designed to enhance the sensitivity for acceleration measurement. A unique mathematical method using coupled-mode theory and the transfer-matrix method is developed to design and analyze the shift in the Bragg wavelength of the superstructure configuration of the gratings, due to simultaneously applied pressure and acceleration. The effect of temperature on the wavelength shift is compensated by introducing another Bragg grating in the superstructure configuration. The measured sensitivities for pressure and acceleration are found to be 0.21 pm/Pa and 6.49 nm/g respectively.

  • A rear axle steering (RAS) system is attached to the rear of medium and large commercial vehicles that transport large cargo. The existing RAS systems are driven by electro-hydraulic actuator (EHA), and most commercialized EHAs consist of electric motors, hydraulic pumps, relief valves, prefill valves and cylinders. The prefill valve required for such EHAs is a type of check valve with extremely low cracking pressure that should not allow RAS to have noise or vibration, and the prefill valve prevents system negative pressure as well as unstable operation. Most papers on this topic rely on experiments to predict valve performance, and theoretically detailed modeling of valves or pipelines is performed, but it is very rare to evaluate hydraulic vibration characteristics by analysing everything from hydraulic pumps to valves comprehensively. In this study, we proposed an experimental circuit that can predict the performance of the prefill valve. The study also analysed the pressure-flow pulsation that is transmitted to the valve through the pipeline, and how the transmitted pressure-flow pulsation affects the valve vibration.

  • The blowdown transient pipe flows resulting from the actuation of the safety/relief valve (SRV) under valve opening conditions have been analyzed. The analytical model has been developed for a uniform pipe with friction through which the flow is discharged into a suppression pool in case of a sudden opening of the SRV The piping flow characteristics and dynamic loads are calculated. Effects of system pressure, pipe length and submergence depth are included.

  • In this study, the sliding wear in spur gears, using Archard's wear model, is analyzed. Formulas of tooth sliding wear depth along the line of action are derived. The tooth profile is modified Id make a smooth transmission of the normal loads and the cylinder profile for reducing the pressure spike is suggested. The sliding wear rate is calculated with these profiling results. We expect these modification methods to contribute to the reduction of sliding wear not only in the root, but the tip of tooth and tooth edge.

  • By way of driving a 2-way on/off solenoid hydraulic valve with a pulse width modulation (PWM) signal, control of the pressure in a certain volume is frequently used in various applications. However, the pressure built-up according to the duty ratio and carrier frequency of the PWM signal is not so well understood. In order to clarify the characteristics of 2-way valve hydraulic pressure control systems, in this paper two formula fur the mean and ripple of the load pressure were derived through theoretical analysis. And the accuracy of the derived formula were verified by comparison with the experimental test result. Generally 2-way valve systems are constructed as a bleed-off circuit, while 3-way valves are used as a control element in a meter-in circuit pressure control system. In a bleed-off circuit, the system supply pressure from a hydraulic power pack does not remain constant, but changes according to their external load. In turn, the relief valve in the hydraulic power pack reacts accordingly showing complicated dynamic behavior, which makes an analytical study difficult. In order to resolve the problem, simple but accurate empirical dynamic models fer a bleed-off system were used in the course of formula derivation. As the result, selection criteria for two major control parameters of the driving signal is established and the basic strategy to suppress the unnecessary pressure fluctuation can be provided for a hydraulic pressure control system using a 2-way on/off solenoid valve.

  • PJB(Prefabricated Joint Box) is consisted of three major components ; an epoxy unit, a stress relief cone and a spring unit. The insulation structure of PJB is maintained by the interfacial pressure, and the dielectric performance at the interface depends on the interfacial pressure which is regarded as the most important factor for preventing breakdown failure. This experiment was performed to investigate breakdown voltage characteristic and partial discharge patterns under the controlled pressure conditions at the simulated interface. Finally, this paper presents the optimal pressure conditions at the interface by analyasing the PD patterns.
