  • The various film cooling hole shapes have been proposed for effective external cooling of gas turbine blade. In this study, the film cooling effectiveness by three different hole shapes (cylindrical hole, $15^{\circ}$ angle anti-vortex hole, 30-7-7 fan-shaped hole) were examined experimentally. Pressure Sensitive Paint (PSP) technique was used to measure the film cooling effectiveness. The coolant to mainstream density ratio was 1.0 and three blowing ratios of 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 were considered. Results clearly showed that the effect of hole shape on the distribution of film cooling effectiveness. For the cylindrical hole case, the film cooling effectiveness decreased remarkably as the blowing ratio increased due to the jet lift off. Because of large hole exit area and low coolant momentum, the 30-7-7 fan-shaped hole case showed the highest film cooling effectiveness at all blowing ratio, followed by the anti-vortex hole case.

  • A Superconducting Fault Current Limiter is an electric power device which limits the fault current immediately in a power grid. The SFCL must be cooled to below the critical temperature of high temperature superconductor modules. In general, they are submerged in sub-cooled liquid nitrogen for their stable thermal characteristics. To cool and maintain the target temperature and pressure of the sub-cooled liquid nitrogen, the cryogenic cooling system should be designed well with a cryocooler and coolant circulation devices. The pressure of the cryostat for the SFCL should be pressurized to suppress the generation of nitrogen bubbles in quench mode of the SFCL. In this study, we tested the performance of the cooling system for the prototype 154 kV SFCL, which consist of a Stirling cryocooler, a subcooling cryostat, a pressure builder and a main cryostat for the SFCL module, to verify the design of the cooling system and the electric performance of the SFCL. The normal operation condition of the main cryostat is 71 K and 500 kPa. This paper presents tests results of the overall cooling system.

  • The structural analysis and water pressure tests are performed for liquid rocket thrust chamber regenerative cooling channel specimens at room temperature condition. Material properties of copper alloy to be used in the elastic-plastic structural analysis are obtained by uniaxial tension test at room temperature. The plate-type cooling channel specimens are manufactured and performed water pressure test to verify the analysis results. The results of elastic-plastic structural analysis and water pressure test show resonable agreements though with minor differences and it is revealed that structural stability of regenerative cooling channel is highly affected by the manufacturing tolerances due to very thin cross-sectional thickness of the cooling channel.

  • This paper is related to a design of high pressure sub-scale combustor with regenerative reeling. As a previous step for the evaluation of thermal heat flux, a similar combustor with cooling water was manufactured. Design conditions with high combustion efficiency and cooling performance were verified through the hot firing tests of the water-cooled high pressure combustor. Finally the regeneratively cooled high pressure combustor has been designed based on these data. After manufacturing it, its practical utility will be tested and verified through hot firing tests.

  • Periodic pulsations in the static pressure near turbine surfaces as blade rows move relative to each other is one of the important sources of turbine unsteadiness. The present experiment aims to investigate the effect of the static pressure pulsations on the interaction of film coolant flows from two rows of staggered holes with mainstream and its effect on film cooling heat transfer. Potential flow pulsations are generated by the rotating shutter mechanism installed downstream of the test section, The free-stream Strouhal number based on the boundary layer thickness is in the range of 0.033 - 0.33, and the amplitude of about 10-20%. Measured are time-averaged and phase-averaged velocity variations, pressure variations and temperature distributions of the flow field. Experimental conditions are identified by boundary layer measurements. Injectant behavior is characterized by the measurements of unsteady pressure in the plenum chamber and free-stream static pressure. The film cooling effectiveness is evaluated from the insulated wall temperature measurement. It has been found that bulk flow pulsation provides very large diffusion of the injectants and the effectiveness is significantly reduced by the flow pulsations.

  • The film cooling effectiveness on a flat plate measured by pressure sensitive paint technique. Six film cooling hole were fabricated on a flat plate with 30 degree angle with respect to the surface and three blowing ratios of 0.5, 1, and 2 were tested. Results showed that PSP technique successfully evaluated the distribution of film cooling effectiveness and showed similar results with references. The film cooling effectiveness near the film cooling holes was higher for lower blowing ratio case. As the blowing ratio was increased, the film cooling effectiveness near the film cooling hole decreased due to the lift off of the coolant. At far downstream, the film cooling effectiveness for higher blowing ratio was higher due to the coolant reattachment.

  • Two phase thermosyphone loop for electronics cooling are designed and manufactured to test its performance under the partial load and low environment temperature conditions. The thermosyphone device has six evaporators connected parallel for the purpose of cooling six power amplifier units (PAU) independently. The heater modules for simulating PAUs are adhered with thermal pad to the evaporator plates to reduce the contact resistance. There are unbalanced distributions of liquid refrigerant in the differently heated evaporators due to the vapor pressure difference. To reduce the vapor pressure differences caused by partial heating, two evaporators are connected each other using the copper tube. The pressure regulation tube successfully reduces these unbalances and it is good candidates for a field distributed systems. Under the low environment temperature operating condition, such as $-30^{\circ}C$, there may be unexpected subcooling in condenser. It leads the very low saturation pressure, and under this condition there exists explosive boiling in evaporator. The abrupt pressure rise due to the explosive boiling inhibits the supplement of liquid refrigerant to the evaporator for continuous cooling. Finally the cooling cycle will be broken. For the normal circulation of refrigerant there may be an optimum cooling air flow rate in condenser to adjust the given heat load.

  • The cooling water system for the PEFP 20 MeV proton accelerator was established and tested to obtain the precise resonance frequency of DTL through the temperature control of cooling water. The water temperature in the main flow loop was manipulated by adjusting the proportion of hot water returning from the DTL structures through the heat exchanger loop. Due to low duty factor operation and insufficient cooling loop installation of the DTL tanks, the manual mode operation was applied to maintain the DTL temperatures close to their resonance temperatures. The optimized process conditions with flow balancing and pressure drop in the DTL cooling systems are reported.

  • The present study investigates to improve the film cooling performance on the vane endwall. Numerical simulation was conducted to analyze film cooling characteristics on the vane endwall. Six different hole arrangements were designed considering flow characteristics on the endwall. The results showed that the film cooling effectiveness was low on the pressure side and nozzle throat in the base case, because coolant was deflected from the pressure side to the suction side. On the other hand, when the holes were installed near the pressure side, the film cooling effectiveness was enhanced on the pressure side and nozzle throat, because the coolant was less affected by cross flow. Therefore, the film cooling effectiveness increases about 16% compared to the base hole arrangement.

  • Hyperbolic thin-shell cooling towers have complicated vibration modes, and are very sensitive to the effects of group towers and wind-induced vibrations. Traditional aero-elastic models of cooling towers are usually designed based on the method of stiffness simulation by continuous medium thin shell materials. However, the method has some shortages in actual engineering applications, so the so-called "equivalent beam-net design method" of aero-elastic models of cooling towers is proposed in the paper and an aero-elastic model with a proportion of 1: 200 based on the method above with integrated pressure measurements and vibration measurements has been designed and carried out in TJ-3 wind tunnel of Tongji university. According to the wind tunnel test, this paper discusses the impacts of self-excited force effect on the surface wind pressure of a large-scale cooling tower and the results show that the impact of self-excited force on the distribution characteristics of average surface wind pressure is very small, but the impact on the form of distribution and numerical value of fluctuating wind pressure is relatively large. Combing with the Complete Quadratic Combination method (hereafter referred to as CQC method), the paper further studies the numerical sizes and distribution characteristics of background components, resonant components, cross-term components and total fluctuating wind-induced vibration responses of some typical nodes which indicate that the resonance response is dominant in the fluctuating wind-induced vibration response and cross-term components are not negligible for wind-induced vibration responses of super-large cooling towers.
