Methodology based on the elastic-plastic fracture mechanics has been widely accepted in predicting the critical crack length(CCL) of pressure tubes of CANDU nuclear plants. A conservative estimate of CCL is obtained by employing the J-resistance curves measured with the specimens satisfying plane strain condition as suggested in the ASTM standard. Due to limited thickness of the pressure tubes the curved compact tension(CT) specimens taken out from tile pressure tube have been used in obtaining J-resistance curves. The curved CT specimen inevitably introduce slant fatigue crack during precracking. Hence, effect of specimen geometry and slant crack on J-resistance curve should be explored. In this study, the difference of J integral values between the standard CT specimens satisfying plane strain condition and the nonstandard curved CT with limited thickness (4.2mm) is estimated using finite element analysis. The fracture resistance curves of Zr-2.5Nb obtained previously by other authors are critically discussed. Various finite element analysis were conducted such as 2D analysis under plane stress and plane strain conditions and 3D analysis for flat CT, curved CT with straight crack and curved CT with slant crack front. J-integral values were determined by local contour integration near the crack tip, which was considered as accurate J-values. J value was also determined from the load versus load line displacement curve and the J estimation equation in the ASTM standard. Discrepancies between the two values were shown and suggestion was made for obtaining accurate J values from the load line displacement curves obtained by the curved CT specimens.

We have isolated numerous cold deep-sea adapted microorganisms (piezophilic, formerly referred to as "barophilic" bacteria) using deep-sea research submersibles. Many of the isolates are novel psychrophilic bacteria, and we have identified several new piezophilic species, i.e., Photobacterium profundum, Shewanella violacea, Moritella japonica, Moritella yayanosii, Psychromonas kaikoi, and Colwellia piezophila. These piezophiles are involving to five genera in gamma-Proteobacteria subgroup and produce significant amounts of unsaturated fatty acids in their cell membrane fractions to maintain the membrane fluidity in cold and high-pressure environments. Piezophilic microorganisms have been identified in many deep-sea bottoms of many of the world oceans. Therefore, these microbes are well distributed on our planet. One of the isolated deep-sea piezophiles, Shewanella violacea strain DSS12 is a psychrophilic, moderately piezophilic bacterium from a sediment sample collected at the Ryukyu Trench (depth: 5,110 m), which grows optimally at 30 MPa and $8^{\circ}C$ but also grows at atmospheric pressure (0.1 MPa) and $8^{\circ}C$. We have examined this strain to elucidate the molecular basis for gene regulation at different pressure conditions because this strain is useful as a model bacterium for comparing the various features of bacterial physiology under pressure conditions. In addition, we completed the sequencing of the entire genome of this piezophilic bacterium and we expect that many biotechnologically useful genes will be identified from the genome information.
Gastrodia elata Bl. (GE) is a traditional herbal medicine used for the treatment hypertension and cerebrovascular disease. The purpose of this study was to investigate the antioxidant effect and blood pressure control ability of the GABA containing fermented Gastrodia elata Blume. The fermentation strain provided by Dr. Gi in Seoul National University is L. brevis GABA100, excellent strain of GABA production, which is involved in the ability to degrade gastrodin glycosides and activation of brain function. The Gastrodia elata Blume fermented by Lactobacillus brevis GABA 100 showed antioxidant activity (total phenolic contents, DPPH radical and ABTS anion scavenging activities) than unfermented Gastrodia elata Blume. In the spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR), the concentration of fermented Gastrodia elata Blume was administered at 500, 1,000, and 2,000 mg/kg for 8 weeks. Systolic blood pressure decreased statistically significantly (p<0.05), especially 2 weeks after feeding fermented Gastrodia elata Blume. Also, it showed a significant decrease in low, medium, and high concentrations of fermented Gastrodia elata Blume at 4 weeks and 8 weeks. These results indicated that Gastrodia elata Blume fermented by the excellent strain of GABA production L. brevis GABA100 shows the antioxidant function and the effect of suppressing the increase in blood pressure.
In this paper, the contact stress and strain distributions in elastomer O-ring seals have been analyzed using a non-linear finite element method. The stress behavior of PTFE materials is assumed as Odgen model because the sealing clearance between the flange and the surface of the O-ring is not small and the sealing pressure of working fluids covers from the atmospheric pressure to high pressure of 15MPa. The contact normal force and stress in wavy O-rings in which is developed for this analysis are uniformly distributed along the flange and the wall of the rectangular groove. And the normal sealing forces are also kept high compared to other contact sealing models such as the conventional O-ring and X-ring, Thus, the FEM computed results indicate that the sealing characteristic of wavy O-rings is food compared with other contact seals.
This study aimed to develop upper and lower bounds to predict the tunnel support pressure under the pile tip during the circular tunnel excavation. Most previous studies on the upper and lower bound methods were carried out for the single ground structures, e.g., retaining wall, foundation, ground anchor and tunnel, in the homogeneous ground conditions, since the pile-soil-tunnel interaction problem is very complicated and sophisticated to solve using those bound methods. Therefore, in the lower bound approach two appropriate stress fields were proposed for single pile and tunnel respectively, and then they were superimposed. In addition, based on the superimposition several failure mechanisms were proposed for the upper bound solution. Finally, these upper bound mechanisms were examined by shear strain data from the laboratory model test and numerical analysis using finite element method.
The study is concerned with the theoretical and experimental investigation of axisymmetric fluid pressure-drive hydronforming of sheet metal by forming over the die cavity. The rigid-plastic finite element method is employed to calculate the stress and strain distribution The effect of blank size and die radius is also studied in the finite element analysis. Experiments are carried out for hydroforming of cold rolled steel sheets under various process conditions. The computational results are compared with the experimental results for the forming pressure vs. pole displacement relations and strain distributions. Comparison has shown that theoretical predictions by the finite element method are in good agreement with the experimental observations. Thus, it is shown that the rigid-plastic finite element method is effectively used in the analysis of axisymmetric fluid pressure-driven hydroforming process.
This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the wedge slamming impact problem, including the fluid-structure interaction. A free drop test was performed to estimate the hydroelasticity. Three wedges were fabricated of 5 mm thick steel plate. The deadrise angles were $15^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$, and $25^{\circ}$. Plate thicknesses of 2 mm and 3 mm were used to determine the effect of the structural rigidity. The drop heights were 25 cm, 50 cm, 75 cm, and 100 cm. The pressure on a rigid part of the wedge and strain of the elastic plate were measured at four different locations. The pressure was compared using the Wagner theory and generalized Wagner theory.
This paper reports on the fabrication process and characteristics of a ceramic thin-film pressure sensor based on Ta-N strain-gauges for harsh environment applications. The Ta-N thin-film strain-gauges are sputter-deposited on a thermally oxidized micromachined Si diaphragms with buried cavities for overpressure tolerance. The proposed device takes advantage of the good mechanical properties of single-crystalline Si as a diaphragm fabricated by SDB and electrochemical etch-stop technology, and in order to extend the temperature range, it has relatively higher resistance, stability and gauge factor of Ta-N thin-films more than other gauges. The fabricated pressure sensor presents a low temperature coefficient of resistance, high-sensitivity, low non-linearity and excellent temperature stability. The sensitivity is 1.21 ~ 1.097 mV/V.kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ in temperature ranges of 25~ $200^{\circ}C$ and a maximum non-linearity is 0.43 %FS.
