The present study has been conducted to develop a heat pipe heat exchanger for middle-high temperature ranged from 300 to $600^{\circ}C$. Heat transfer rate, overall heat transfer coefficient and temperature effectiveness were investigated using a heat pipe heat exchanger with Dowtherm A as working fluid. Theoretical analysis was also conducted, and the followings were obtained: (1) Heat exchange rate increased as waste gas temperature supplied to evaporator and frontal velocity in condenser increased, (2) Overall heat transfer coefficient increased by $3{\sim}7\%$ as frontal velocity in evaporator and condenser increased, (3) Temperature effectiveness was about $30\%$ in evaporator and was about $40\%$ in condenser, (4) Heat recovery rate was about $38\%$, (5) Pressure drop did not exceed $8\;mmH_{2}O$ under the running condition of $1{\sim}3Nm/s$, (6) Simulation results were corresponded with experimental results.
The paper presents the results of identification, monotonous and cyclic triaxial tests on a potentially liquefiable soil from the Guadeloupe island. The material is a very soft clayey soil whose susceptibility to liquefaction is not clear when referring to index properties such as grain size distribution, plasticity, etc. The classifications found in the literature indicate that the material has rather a "clay-like" behaviour, i.e., is not very susceptible to liquefaction, but its properties are very close to the threshold values given by the authors. Cyclic triaxial tests carried out on the material under different conditions show that liquefaction is possible for a relatively important level of cyclic deviator or number of cycles. The second part of the paper is devoted to the study of the recovery of the soil after liquefaction and possibly reconsolidation. For the specimens tested without reconsolidation, that simulated the soil immediately after an earthquake, the recovery is nearly non-existent but the drop in pore pressure during extension results in a small available strength. On the contrary, after reconsolidation, the increase in strength of the liquefied specimens is quite large, compared to the initial state, but with unchanged failure envelopes.

In order to control indoor air quality and save energy, it is needed to install a suitable ventilation system equipped with heat exchanger for heat recovery. Paper heat exchanger can recover $50{\sim}70%$ of the enthalpy difference between supply and exhaust air. The purpose of this research is to obtain the experimental correlations for the friction factor, heat transfer coefficient, mass transfer coefficient and permeance of paper heat exchanger, which can be used to predict the performance of the paper heat exchanger. Pressure drops at various velocities, and sensible and latent heat transfer rates at various dry-bulb temperatures, relative humidities and specific humidities are measured to derive experimental correlations. The results of prediction using correlations show fairly good agreement with the experimental data obtained in the actual operating conditions.
Processing and smelting of copper containing sulphide concentrates result in the accumulation of impurities into various process streams. All primary copper smelters and refineries around the world produce significant amounts of slag, dust, sludge, residues and others, which contain copper and precious metals. The recovery of these valuable metals is essential to the overall economics of the smelting process. Physical, chemical and mineralogical characterization of particular slag and Cottrell dusts from primary smelters and $Dor\'{e}$ furnace (TBRC) slag and Pressure Leached Anode slimes from a copper refinery have been carried out to understand the basic behind the recovery processes. Various process options have been evaluated and adapted for the treatment of slag from different smelting furnaces and Cottrell dusts as well as the intermediate products from copper refineries. Besides the hydro- or pyro-metallurgical treatments, the above mentioned physical separation options such as magnetic, gravity separation, flotation and precipitation flotation processes have been successfully identified and adapted as the possible process options to produce a Cu-rich or precious metal-rich concentrates for in-house recycling and other valued by-product for further treatment. The results of laboratory, pilot plant and production operations are presented, and incorporation of several alternative flowsheet is discussed in this paper.

A method of optimum design of an axial rotary sensible heat exchanger for the heat recovery of exhaust gas from the air conditioning space was developed in consideration of economics of investment cost and profit according to the installation of heat exchangers. Leakage rate of exhaust gas was calculated and the correlation for the pressure drop due to leakage of exhaust gas was proposed. Heat transfer between the matrix and exhaust and intake gas was analysed to calculate the effectiveness of heat exchanger, which was used for the optimum design of rotary heat exchanger. The results show that optimum rotational speed increases as the length of rotor increases and there exists optimum NTU which maximizes the gain of total cost according to the installation of rotary heat exchanger.

This paper discusses the reduction and subsequent recovery and increase of shear strength of clay in the vicinity of soil-cement column. Laboratory and field tests were conducted to investigate the effects on surrounding clay during and after soil-cement column installation in soft Ariake clay. Discussions were made on the mechanism of strength changes of clay by considering the thixotropic recovery, reconsolidation effect, penetration of cement slurry and diffusion of exchangeable cations. On the basis of field and laboratory observations, 10 days after column installation, the decreased shear strength of surrounding clay during mixing was recovered and 30 days later, shear strength of surrounding clay increased 30% by average. Therefore, it is recommended that the increase of shear strength of clay can be taken into consideration in the bearing capacity and stability analysis of the composite ground.
Using an isolated rat heart preparation under both aerobic and ischemic condition, we observed the myocardial protective effect of verapamil cardioplegia. Isolated working hearts were subjected to global ischemia at 25oC. Before ischemic arrest, rat hearts were treated with cold potassium cardioplegic solution [K=30 mEq/L] in control group and cold potassium cardioplegic solution added with verapamil [1 mg/L] in other group. After 30 min. of ischemia, hemodynamic parameters and creatine kinase leakage in coronary effluent were observed. Verapamil group exhibited greater percent of recovery in aortic pressure [p<0.01], aortic flow [p<0.01], and stroke volume [p<0.05]. Although there were no significant difference in creatine kinase leakage and the percent recovery of cardiac output between verapamil and control group, verapamil group showed better myocardial function. But the time to recover regular sinus rhythm was significantly [p<0.001] prolonged in verapamil group.

Frictional sound of 13 vapor permeable water repellent fabric by sound generator were recorded and analysed through FFT analysis. The frictional Sounds were quantified by calculating total sound pressure(LPT), the level range ΔL and the frequency difference Δf. Mechanical properties were measured by KES-FB. LPT values of specimens finished wet coating were higher than those of dry coating. Values for bending rigidity, shear stiffness, surface roughness and compressional recovery of polyurethane fabrics increased compared with the cire finished fabrics. Laminated fabrics had high values of frictional coefficient and low values of surface roughness. LPT showed significant correlation with compressional energy, weight and thickness. (ΔL) was highly correlated with compressional linearity, frictional coefficient, compressional recovery, and (Δf) with tensile linearity, compressional energy, thickness, and weight.
A compact air-preheating type heat exchanger was developed and tested for the ultra-high temperature heat recovery applications. For the direct use of exhaust gases up to $1200^{\circ}C$, the heat exchanger adopted a ceramic core with high strength and low thermal expansion coefficient less than $1{\times}10^{-6}^{\circ}C^{-1}$. The ceramic core was fabricated by special extrusion and bonding techniques. To minimize thermal stresses in the core, spring-loaded sealing mechanism was designed and successfully installed. 1-pass air flow scheme was adopted for the compactness and cost-savings. The pressure test for the ceramic core showed no failure under 35 kPa and less than 3% leak under 7 kPa. Flue gas simulation system was developed to investigate the performance of the heat exchanger. The test results showed normal operations of the heat exchanger up to $1200^{\circ}C$ of exhaust gases and relatively high heat recovery efficiencies of 31~39% depending upon exhaust gas temperatures..
