The scroll compressor used for heat pump has a wide range of operation condition. To cover both heating and cooling modes, the operating Pressure ratio ranges from 1.5 to 6.8. Since the scroll compressor, however, is a type of compressor whose pressure ratio is fixed, some loss in the compression work is caused by the operation at the pressure ratio different from the built-in pressure ratio. A way of avoiding this problem is to introduce by-Pass holes in compression chambers, so that the compressed gas of pressure higher than the discharge pressure, yet not reached to the discharge port can be released earlier through the by-Pass holes. In this paper, an optimum Positioning of the by-Pass hole and the effect of the by-pass valve on the compressor performance are studied.

A cylindrical constant volume combustion bomb is used to investigate the combustion characteristics and to analyze the heat quantity of homogeneous charge methane-air mixture under various initial pressures, excess air ratios and ignition times. As the overall pressure increase, the values of maximum combustion pressure, maximum heat release rate and cumulative heat release have been increased. But it is not very meaningful to compare with some values such as maximum combustion pressure, maximum heat release rate and cumulative heat release for different overall pressure due to the different heat energy of supplied fuel. So the each value is needed to be compared with normalized value, which is divided by the entered fuel energy. To analyze the heat quantity, some definitions including the CHR ratio, the UHC ratio and the HL ratio are needed and are calculated. As the overall pressure increase, the CHR ratios and the UHC ratios have been decreased, while the HL ratios have been increased. The CHR ratio of 300 ms has the higher value than that of 10000ms, and the HL ratios of 300 ms have a lower value.

In order to investigate the effectiveness of an orifice system in producing pressure drops and the effect of compressibility on the Pressure drop, computations using the mass-averaged implicit Wavier-Stokes equations were applied to the axisymmetric pipe flows with the operating pressure ratio from 1.5 to 20.0. The standard k-e turbulence model was employed to close the governing equations. Numerical calculations were carried out for some combinations of the multiple orifice configurations. The present CFD data showed that the orifice systems, which have been applied to incompressible flow regime to date, can not be used for the hint operating Pressure ratio flows. The orifice interval did not strongly affect the total pressure drop but the orifice area ratio more than 2.5 led to high pressure drops. The total pressure drop rapidly increased in the range of the operating pressure ratio from 1.5 to 4.0, but it did not depend on the operating pressure ratio over 4.0.
Compressible gas flow through a convergent-divergent nozzle is choked at the nozzle throat under a certain critical pressure ratio, and then being no longer dependent on the pressure change in the downstream flow field. In practical, the flow field at the divergent part of the critical nozzle can affect the effective critical pressure ratio. In order to investigate details of flow field through a critical nozzle, the present study solves the axisymmetric, compressible, Wavier-Stokes equations. The diameter of the nozzle throat is D=8.26mm and the half angle of the diffuser is changed between $2^{\circ}\;and\;10^{\circ}$ Computational results are compared with the previous experimental ones. The results obtained show that the divergence angle is significantly influences the critical pressure ratio and the present computations predict the experimented discharge coefficient and critical pressure ratio with a good accuracy. It is also found that a nozzle with the half angle of $4^{\circ}$ nearly predicts the theoretical critical pressure ratio.

A study on the combustion characteristics by using Emulsion Fuel in Diesel Engine is performed experimentally. In this paper, the experiments are performed at engine speed 1800rpm, emulsion fuel ratio is 0%, 10%, 20%, and main measured items are specific fuel consumption, pressure, ratio of pressure rise, rate of heat release etc. The obtained conclusions are as follows. 1) Specific fuel consumption increase maximum 19.8% at low load, but is not effected at full load. 2) Ratio of pressure rise and rate of heat release are about the same in the case of 10% and 20% of emulsion fuel ratio. 3) Cylinder Pressure increase 11.7%, ratio of pressure rise increase 60.4% in case of emulsion fuel ratio 20% at full load. 4) Rate of heat release increase 76.9% in case of emulsion fuel ratio 20% at full load.

In order to understand the phenomena of combustion instability, an experimental study was conducted at the moderate pressure and ambient temperature conditions. The flame behavior and the pressure fluctuations were measured in a dump combustor. Various types of combustion modes occurred in accordance with the equivalence ratio and the fuel supplying conditions. The fluctuation of pressure, heat release and equivalence ratio were measured by piezoelectric pressure sensor, high speed Intensified Charge Coupled Device (HICCD) camera and gas chromatography respectively. Two representative modes were self-excited pressure oscillations at the resonance of combustion chamber (200Hz) and instabilities related to the modulated fuel flow rate through the fuel holes (10Hz). It is found that, especially in an unchoked fuel flow condition, the modulation of the fuel flow rate affects the characteristics of flame behavior and pressure fluctuations in a lean premixed flame.
Dynamic earth pressure is considered an important parameter in the design of embedded structures. In current engineering design simplified methods developed either for yielding or non-yielding structures are utilized to predict resultant dynamic pressure. The applicability of these equations to embedded structures have not yet been reported. In this study we perform a suite of equivalent linear time history analysis for a range of embedded structure configurations. Numerically calculated dynamic pressure is shown to depend on the flexibility ratio (F), aspect ratio (L/H) of the embedded structure, and ground motion. Increase in L/H and intensity increases the magnitude of dynamic pressure. An increase in F decreases the dynamic pressure. Overall, the trends highlight the need for development of new method that accounts for F and L/H to calculate the dynamic pressure for the performance-based design of embedded structures.
It has been observed in experiments that combustion instability of low frequency (${\sim}$ 10Hz) results form the modulation of equivalence ratio at fuel injection hole when a pressure fluctuation propagates upwards along the channel of the burner under an unchoked fuel flow condition. In this study, a commercial program was used to determine how the fuel flow rate changed with respect to the pressure, velocity of the fuel flow and the mass fraction in a choked and an unchoked condition. The calculation focus on the upstream of the dump plane to know how the forced pressure with the fuel injection conditions affects the modulation of the equivalence ratio. Therefore, it is found that pressure fluctuation leads to oscillation of mass flow rate and then results in equivalence ratio modulation under the unchoked fuel flow condition.

This study is theoretically examined the influences on the performance of diesel engine super¬charged by exhaust gas turbine with the change of excess air factor, admission ratio, total efficien¬cy of turbine and compressor, scavenging pressure ratio, and scavenging temperature. In this study, all calculations are carried out by computer, and the theoretical engine performance is com¬pared with the actual engine performance which is offered from engine manufacturer. Following results are acquired by this study. The mean effective pressure is increased with decrease of excess air factor or increase of scavenging pressure ratio. As the admission ratio or total efficiency of tur¬bine is increased, the mean effective pressure is increased but the specific fuel consumption is decreased. Mean calculation error compared with the actual engine performance is under 5 per¬cents, therefore, this calculation method can be used in the design of diesel engine.
Computational study is performed to understand the fluidic thrust vectoring control of an axisymmetric nozzle, in which secondary gas injection is made in the divergent section of the nozzle. The nozzle has a design Mach number of 2.0, and the operation pressure ratio is varied to obtain the different flow features in the nozzle flow. The injection flow rate is varied by means of the injection port pressure. Test conditions are in the range of the nozzle pressure ratio from 3.0 to 8.26 and the injection pressure ratio from 0 to 1.0. The present computational results show that, for a given nozzle pressure ratio, an increase of the injection pressure ratio produces increased thrust vector angle, but decreases the thrust efficiency.
