  • Objective: The purpose of this study is to find out the reliability and validity of the newly updated Balancia 2.5 program using Wii balance board through equipment that can measure center of pressure data with the precision. Design: Cross-sectional study Methods: Twenty-seven healthy adults participated in the study. The subjects were assessed for static balance ability by Accusway, and were assessed for static balance ability on Wii balance board connected to theBalancia 2.5 program. To limit postural fluctuations due to stare, the subjects were asked to look at a 15 cm dot drawn 3 m in front of them for 30 seconds with their eyes open. Static balance ability data such as path length and sway velocity were extracted from all measurement tools.Intra-rater and inter-rater reliability and validity were extracted through intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and 95% confidence interval (CI). Results: The intra-rater reliability that the same rater shows consistent results through test-retest was a high level at ICC=0.968 (0.926~0.986), and inter-rater reliability that the requires consistent results even when measured by different raters was a high level at ICC=0.943 (0.870~0.975). The validity was a high level at ICC=0.948 (0.881~0.977), which shows whether the measurement tool is properly measuring what it is intended to measure. Conclusions: The Balancia 2.5 program, newly updated through this study, proved to be a program with high reliability and validity in evaluating static balance ability like the existingBalancia 2.0 program.

  • Purpose: This study was designed to investigate the changes of postural sway and muscle activation while standing upright and performing a dual task. Methods: Nine healthy adults were recruited and provided their written informed consent. They performed a balance task with and without a cognitive task on a force flatform (Good balance, Metitur Ltd., Filand). Postural sway was measured as medio-lateral and anterior-posterior distance and the velocity of the center of pressure and muscle activations of the ankle dorsi- and plantar-muscle was measured. The recruits completed three trials and the data was analyzed by a paired t-test. Results: There were significant differences in the medio-lateral and anterior-posterior distance and the velocity of the center of pressure, and significant increases in the muscle activities of the tibialis anterior. Conclusion: These findings revealed that performing a dual task increases postural sway and muscle activation of the ankle when simultaneously maintaining balance and performing another cognitive task. Future studies should focus on balance training with a dual task for patients.

  • An energy balance analysis is conducted for a 30 t thrust level liquid rocket engine. The relations between thrust and combustion pressure, between thrust and propellant flow rate, and between combustion pressure and fuel pump pressure rise are compared against those indicated by a published database of the existing rocket engines. A combustion pressure higher than the old design value is obtained, implying that the present design is high-performance oriented. The thrust to propellant flow rate ratio is the same as that of the existing engines, indicating that the specific impulse performance is at the usual level. The fuel pump pressure rise is found to be slightly high when the combustion pressure is considered, and it is attributed to the pressure budget of the present ground test engine not being optimized.

  • A hydrodynamic separator using natural free energy provided by bridge was operated for the treatment of stormwater runoff. The separator was automatically controlled by using electronic valve which is connected with pressure meter. Normally the separator was opened during dry days, but it was closed after the capture of first flush. The results indicated that the average pressure and the flow rate were directly affected by the rainfall intensity. The pressure was more than 3 meters as the rainfall intensity was above 5 mm/hr. The percent volume of underflow decreased as the pressure and flow rate increased, but the percent volume of overflow showed an opposite behavior. The concentration of total suspended solids (TSS) in underflow increased as a function of increasing pressure while it decreased in overflow. The TSS separation efficiency was evaluated based on mass balance. It ranged from 30% to 90% with the pressure ranging from 2 to 10 meters, and it was proportional to pressure and flow rate. The analysis of water balance indicated that around 13% of total runoff was captured by the separator as a first flush, and this runoff was separated as underflow and overflow with the respective percent volume of 29% and 71%. The pollutants budget was also examined based on mass balance. The results showed that the percent of TSS, $COD_{cr}$, TN and TP in underflow were 73%, 59%, 7.6% and 49%, respectively.

  • Counter balance valve is used as one part of hydraulic motor brake system. The function of this valve is to protect over-run or free falling of inertia load. But occasionally the brake system with counter balance valve makes some undesirable problems such as pressure surges or vibrations. These problems may hurt system safety and driver's conformability. Nevertheless, studies on dynamic characteristics of hydraulic system including counter balance valve are very rare, so further accumulation of research results are required. In this study, for the purpose of easy estimation about dynamic characteristics of hydraulic system including counter balance valve, precise formulation describing fluid dynamics and valve dynamics under various boundary conditions were made. The equations obtained in the preceding process include some parameters that must be got experimentally. Flow coefficients of valve and choke are the most significant ones among the parameters. So these parameters are obtained experimentally in this study, and experimental equations obtained from the experimental data were used for numerical calculation. The equations were analysed by numerical integration using Runge-Kutta method, because the equations contain various nonlinear terms. From the numerical analysis, it was verified that the dynamic response of counter balance valve and pressure variation at each elements can be estimated very easily. So the analysing method developed in this study enabled very easy estimating the relation between the performances of counter balance valve and various physical parameters related to the valve. Conclusively, it is said that the results obtained in this study can be used very usefully to develop a new type counter balance valve or to apply the valve to actual hydraulic system for various industrial equipments.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the short-term effects of lumbar rotational mobilization under the single-leg standing (SLS) position. Fifteen healthy individuals were recruited, and randomized to agroup of trunk rotational exercise (TRE) and lumbar rotational mobilization (LRM). Trunk twist rotational exercise was performed to the TRE group, and mobilization was applied to the LRM group on the lumbar spine. Velocity of the center of pressure (VCOP) and center of pressure (COP) for each participant were measured through SLS. COPs were not significantly increased or decreased after treatment in both groups. VCOPs also did not change considerably except on the right side when the eye was closed. There was no significant difference between COPs and VCOPs in two groups. This study suggests that trunk rotation exercise and lumbar rotation mobilization would have similar effects on balance ability.

  • In the current most tool using heat and mass balance in a coal gasifier is dependent on commercial code such as STANJAN, CHEMKIN. However, in order to keep the self-reliance technology, it is necessary to develop the original design tool available for comprehension and analysis on the spot. So in this study, its own heat and mass balance program is developed on the assumption that the process in a coal gasifier is adiabatic and quasi-equilibrium. The mass balance is calculated by using the chemical equilibrium principle. Also the heat and mass balance according to main operating factors such as temperature, pressure and O2/Coal ratio, was carried in this tool. This heat and mass balance was verified on the basis of the results simulated in STANJAN, commercial codes using similar logic.
