  • This paper is intended to investigate the awareness of the elementary school students about the natural environment preservation. For this purpose, 21 elementary school students from the 5th grade of elementary school located in Gwangju city were selected. Especially, we focused on the students' conceptions related to 1) the environments, 2) the safe national land development activity to face several natural disasters and 3) the environmental preservation with the national land development. To evaluate the change of students' conceptions for the national land development, the students were also participated in establishing the plan of the national land development using the model of the natural environment after learning in detail about the natural environments. The results of this study showed that most of the students recognized the concept of the environments as a simple knowledge itself and pollution rather than the protection of environment. In the course of the safe national land development activity to face several natural disasters, the students expressed standardized answer indicating the knowledge based thinking of the environments. According to the results of the environmental preservation with the national land development and the hypothetical project of the national land development, the students did not have enough knowledge for the natural environment preservation although they had understanding of natural disasters and environmental preservation. Therefore, it is necessary to stress affirmative concept for the environment related to the preservation of natural environment. Also we need to develop the syllabus, which is related to the environmental studies, in the elementary educational program leading students to participate in the environmental preservation with the national land development reasonably and practically.

  • The effect of cryoprotectants and suspending solutions on the preservation of marine heterotophic bacteria was investigated. Six halotolerant and four halophilic bacterial isolates suspended in either distilled water or artificial seawater were preserved in glycerol and dimethylsulfoxide at -70$\^{C}$, respectively. After one year of preservation, the recovery rates on the appropriate agar plates were estimated. The survival rate was found to be dependent on the strain tested, regardless of the preservation conditions tested.

  • This study explores the education of historic preservation in the United States. The research examined its history and philosophical and practical approaches within the American urban context, from its historical backgrounds to evolving social perspectives. This case study is to help collegiate educators in understanding the principles of American architectural heritage conservation and why it has been developed in specific directions and, ultimately, to assist in designing preservation education programs for different local contexts. Historic preservation in the United States has been integrated into the architecture and urban planning field as a sustainable development approach incorporating physical, social, and economic matters. First, this study explored the development of the preservation profession, policies, and education since the 1930s. Second, the researchers investigated the three fundamentals of historic preservation, such as authenticity, documentation, and community engagement. Lastly, this research discussed that American preservation deals with living communities and seeks interdisciplinary approaches. The understanding of historic preservation pedagogy from these multiple perspectives would hopefully provide a guide to developing cultural heritage education programs.

  • This paper examines the issue of heritage preservation by revitalization based in Hong Kong and in particular highlighting the ways in which preservation and urban development can be complementary forces instead of in opposition. Hong Kong and its architectural history is briefly discussed, before explaining the relevant Government measures that are in place with regards to built heritage. The statutory bodies and the level of protection given to heritage buildings are key factors in establishing a basis for the notion of Hong Kong's heritage preservation policies and as such are important to consider when determining any future urban development. Successful revitalization projects will be discussed which are all direct consequences of Hong Kong's more recent change in policies towards heritage preservation.

  • We investigated body shrinkage, defined as change in standard length and body weight of juvenile chub mackerel Scomber japonicus after preservation in 70% ethyl alcohol for 1, 8, or 12 days. Standard length (SL) was decreased by 3.6% and body weight (BW) was reduced by 27.5% after 8 day of preservation. There were no significant decreases in SL and BW after 8 or 12 days preservation. Linear regression equations for estimation of original body size from the size after preservation in 70% ethyl alcohol for 12 days were expressed as: $SL_{original}=0.96SL_{preserved}+5.17$ and $BW_{original}=1.16BW_{preserved}+0.37$. These equations will be useful for improving accuracy the estimation accuracy for various size-related biological parameters in juvenile chub mackerel juvenile.

  • Recently, the community developmental enthusiasm is activated and emerged with the varied developmental plans since the localization was implemented in Korea. But the anxious view of the environmental problems has been gradually heightened in the Environmentally Sound and Sustainable Developmental(ESSD). The local autonomy should listen to the public opinions because the people's anti-developmental movement could obstruct the development project in the community level. The Environment-friendly Rural Development Plan(EFRDP) pursues the development and the environmental preservation of the community at the same time. Therefore EFRDP reflects the local developmental intention and consideration of environmental preservation at the step of planning. Throughout the planning process the opinions of development and environmental preservation should be adjusted, the people's planning ability can be enhanced, and new creative alternative ideas will come out at times.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the characters and sustainability of built heritage featured in the eight-scenery listings of Gyeonggi municipalities in South Korea. Eight scenery is a place marketing medium that reflects the community's appreciation of the selected resources. For a research method, we utilize framework analysis to understand the cultural resources in three categories: heritage value identification, preservation, and dissemination. Primary sources for data collection include the chosen eleven cities' eight-scenery webpages, the National Cultural Heritage Portal, and articles about the built heritage resources included in the eight scenery. The results of this study show the public's acknowledgment of diverse built heritage, from prestigious monuments to local heritage interpretations, and various preservation and public program development approaches. The conclusion discusses the research findings regarding historic preservation, sustainable development, and place marketing.

  • Human being have destroyed environment through rapid industrialization, so that the world is increasingly faced with golbal environmental problem such as destruction of ozone layer, global warming., acid rain, decertification and we are heading toward impending disaster of the earth. Especially, recent environmental pollution of China from rapid economic development threatens neighboring Korea and Japan. Regional development are necessary for promotion of national prosperity, but theses regional developments must have brought about environmental and preservation. Actually there are so many conflict cases; Saemankum reclamation project, construction of nuclear waste storage facility, dam construction of China etc. Here, harmony and balance between development and preservation are needed to solve these great crux. Under theses condition, the concept of ESSD(Environmentally Sound and Sustainable Development) emerged as a global issue. And staring point to solve present environmental problems is to perceive the truth that we have inherited only one earth and hence owe a debt to preserve its environment for the benefit of the future generations.
