Fault diagnosis using multiple PI observers

  • Fault diagnosis problem is currently the subject of extensive research and numerous survey paper can be found. Although several works are studied on the fault detection and isolation observers and the residual generators, those are concerned with only the detection of actuator failures or sensor failures. So, the perfect detection and isolation is strongly required for practical applications. In this paper, a, strategy of fault diagnosis using multiple proportional integral (PI) observers including the magnitude of actuator failures is provided. It is shown that actuator failures are detected and isolated perfectly by monitoring the integrated error between actual output and estimated output by a PI observer. Also in presence of complex actuator and sensor failures, these failures are detected and isolated by multiple PI observers.

  • In shuttle vans designed to transport children, the recognition of a child's approach and departure is very important. Ultrasonic sensors are generally used for a short distance around a vehicle. Although ultrasonic sensors are cheaper than other ADAS sensors, the number of sensors installed in a van should be optimized. In order to recognize the presence of a child around a shuttle van, this paper proposes the placement of ultrasonic sensors in the van. Considering the turning radius of the van and the distance from each sensor to a child, collision risk is classified as 'safe', 'warning', and 'danger'. The sensor placement and the recognition algorithm are verified in a virtual driving environment.

Active vibration control of smart composite structures in hygrothermal environment

  • The composite materials may be exposed to environmental (thermal or hygral or both) condition during their service life. The effect of environmental condition is usually adverse from the point of view of design of composite structures. In the present research study the effect of hygrothermal condition on the design of laminated composite structures is investigated. The active fiber composite (AFC) which may be utilized as actuator or sensor is considered in the present analysis. The sensor layer is used to sense the level of response of the composite structures. The sensed voltage is fed back to the actuator through the controller. In this study both displacement and velocity feedback controllers are employed to reduce the response of the composite laminate within acceptable limit. The Newmark direct time integration scheme is employed along with modal superposition method to improve the computational efficiency. It is observed from the numerical study that the laminated composite structures become weak in the presence of hygrothermal load. The response of the structure can be brought to the acceptable level once the AFC layer is activated through the feedback loop.

  • This paper proposes a new robust motion deblurring filter using the inertial sensor measurements for strapdown image IR applications. With taking the PSF measurement error into account, the motion blurred image is modeled by the linear uncertain state space equation with the noise corrupted measurement matrix and the stochastic parameter uncertainty. This motivates us to solve the motion deblurring problem based on the recently developed robust least squares estimation theory. In order to suppress the ringing effect on the deblurred image, the robust least squares estimator is slightly modified by adoping the ridge-regression concept. Through the computer simulations using the actual IR scenes, it is demonstrated that the proposed algorithm shows superior and reliable motion deblurring performance even in the presence of time-varying motion artifact.

다공성 3C-SiC 기반 저항식 수소센서의 제작과 그 특성 (Fabrication of a Porous 3C-SiC Based Resistivity Hydrogen Sensor and Its Characteristics)

  • Porous 3C-SiC(pSiC) samples with different pore diameters were prepared from poly crystalline N-type 3C-SiC by electrochemical anodization. The pSiC surface was chemically modified by the sputtering of Pd and Pt nano-particles as a hydrogen catalyst. Changes in resistance were monitored with hydrogen concentrations in the range of 110 ppm - 410 ppm. The variations of the electrical resistance in the presence of hydrogen demonstrated that Pd and Pt-deposited pSiC samples have the ability to detect hydrogen at room temperature. Regardless of the catalyst, the 25 nm pore diameter samples showed good response and recovery properties. However, the 60 nm samples showed unstable and slow response. It was found that the pore size affects the catalyst reaction and consequently, results in changes of the sensitivity to hydrogen.

  • Hydrogen gas sensors were fabricated using $PdO_x$ loaded with SWNTs. The nanoparticle powders of $SWNT_s-PdO_x$ composite were deposited on Si wafer substrates by a vacuum filtering deposition method. The fabricated sensors were tested against hydrogen gas. The composition ratio that exhibited the highest response to hydrogen gases was SWNTs : $PdO_x$ = 98 : 2 in wt% ratio at operating temperature of about $150^{\circ}C$. The response and recovery times were shorter than 1.0 min. in presence of 1000 ppm hydrogen.

  • The potential use of ranging sensors for reducing the occurrence of accidents in real environment is explored by many companies and laboratories. Most of the sensors under investigation utilize the FMCW(Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave) waveforms. The automotive environment presents to the FMCW radar sensor a multitude of moving and fixed targets and the sensor must detect and track only the targets which may pose a threat of collision or passengers accident. The sensor must function accurately in the presence of background echoes generated by moving and fixed targets, ground reflections, atmospheric noises, including rains, fog, and, snow and noise generated within the receiver. False detection of the desired target in this environment may issue false alarms. That may be dangerous to the passenger and the vehicle. A high false alarm rate is totally unacceptable. The false alarm mechanism consists of noise peaks, crossing the threshold and the undesired response of the system to off lane targets which are not potentially hazardous to the radar equipped vehicle. This paper presents an improve technique safety performance for driver-less operation using FMCW radar sensors.

폴리비닐리덴플루오라이드로 코팅한 폴리아닐린센서의 메탄올에 대한 감응 특성과 장기안정도 고찰 (Sensing Behavior and Long-Term Stability of Polyaniline Sensor Coated with Poly(vinylidenefluoride) for Methanol Vapors)

  • The problem of polyaniline (PANi) sensor has been poor mechanical and chemical stability under atmosphere condition. In order to overcome these problems, the PANi sensor coated with polyvinylidenefluoride ($PVF_2$) was employed. The morphology of $PVF_2$ coated-PANi layer was showed smooth and transparent properties at 15% concentration of coating solution. The resistance of $PVF_2$ coated-PANi was kept at constant value and had a good stability at long-term periods in presence of humidity.

Nano Structured Potentiometric Sensors Based on Polyaniline Conducting Polymer for Determination of Cr (VI)

  • In this paper, a potentiometric sensor based on polyaniline conducting polymer for potentiometric determination of Cr (VI) ions is reported. Polyaniline was synthesized electrochemically (cyclic voltammetry method) onto a micro pencil graphite electrode (0.7 mm diameter) in the presence of HCl and diphenylcarbazide (termed as (PGE/PAni/DPC). Some initial experiments were performed in order to find out the optimized conditions for preparation of the introduced Cr (VI) sensor electrode. The plot of E vs. log [Cr (VI)], showed a linear response in the range from $1.0{\times}10^{-6}$ to $1.0{\times}10^{-1}$ M. High repeatability with the detection limit of $8.0{\times}10^{-7}$ M was obtained.
