SMALL AMPLITUDE WAVE IN SHALLOW WATER OVER LINEAR AND QUADRATIC SLOPING BEDS

  • Here we present a study of small-amplitude, shallow water waves on sloping beds. The beds considered in this analysis are linear and quadratic in nature. First we start with stating the relevant governing equations and boundary conditions for the theory of water waves. Once the complete prescription of the water-wave problem is available based on some assumptions (like inviscid, irrotational flow), we normalize it by introducing a suitable set of non-dimensional variables and then we scale the variables with respect to the amplitude parameter. This helps us to characterize the various types of approximation. In the process, a summary of equations that represent different approximations of the water-wave problem is stated. All the relevant equations are presented in rectangular Cartesian coordinates. Then we derive the equations and boundary conditions for small-amplitude and shallow water waves. Two specific types of bed are considered for our calculations. One is a bed with constant slope and the other bed has a quadratic form of surface. These are solved by using separation of variables method.

  • More complex radiotherapy techniques using multi leaf collimation(MLC) such as intensity-modulated radiation therapy(IMRT) has been increasing the significance of verification of leaf position and motion. Due to the reliability and robustness, quality assurance(QA) of MLC is usually performed with portal films. However, the advantage of ease of use and capability of providing digital data of electronic portal imaging devices(EPIDs) have attracted many attentions as alternatives of films for routine quality assurance in spite of the concerns about their clinical feasibility, efficacy, and the cost to benefit ratio. In our work, the method of routine QA of MLC using electronic portal imaging(EPI) was developed. The verification of availability of EPI images for routine QA was performed by comparison with those of the portal films which were simultaneously obtained when radiation was delivered and known prescription input to MLC controller. Specially designed test patterns of dynamic MLC were applied to image acquisition. Quantitative off-line analysis using edge detection algorithm enhanced the verification procedure in addition to on-line qualitative visual assessment. In conclusion, the EPI is available enough for routine QA with the accuracy of portal films.

제 2형 당뇨환자에서 지질이상 유형 및 관리 (Pattern and Management of Dyslipidemia in Type 2 Diabetes Patients in Korea)

  • Dyslipidemia is an important CHD risk factor in diabetic patients. We conducted this study to assess the pattern of dyslipidemia in type 2 diabetes patients, to examine the demographic and clinical factors associated with dyslipidemia and to evaluate attaining within the lipid target goals and treatment strategies. A retrospective analysis was conducted among patents diagnosed type 2 diabetes at outpatient clinic in endocrinology between January 2003 and December 2004. Clinical history and physical examination were reviewed and laboratory data including blood glucose, HbAlc, lipid levels were recorded sequentially at least 1 year. In 882 patients with type 2 diabetes, 437 patients (49.6%) have dyslipidemia and 73% of them (319 patients) received lipid-lowering agents. 244 patients (94 males, 150 females, mean age 60 years old) were susceptible to analyses. The most frequent pattern of dyslipidemia is high LDL level and high TG levels (28%). Metabolic syndrome and macrovascular complication were significant negative independent association with lipid levels within the target goals (p<0.05). Only 15.2% (19 males, 18 females) attained within the lipid tar- get goals. Patients with diabetic dyslipidemia need maximization of lipid-lowering agents, increasing the fibric acid derivatives prescription and the effort to correction of low HDL and/or high TG.

Study on the Effects of Tetrax®-based Combined Rehabilitation Exercise on Chronic Back Pain Cases

  • The purpose of this research is to utilizing the Tetrax$^{(R)}$ balance measuring instrument in order to analyze the postural balance of males and females in their 30 s diagnosed with chronic lower back pain who have followed a 12-week rehabilitation exercise program. The research also examines the effects on any change in back pain level. In terms of the variables in this research, postural balance (left/right, front/back, postural balance) and pain level change (0~100 mm) were measured. Pre-/post-experimental differences were assessed using the paired-t test. In addition, to identify any gender gap, we set the preliminary scores as a covariate and ran the Analysis of Covariance. Statistical significance (a) herein was set at 0.05. As a result of this research experiment, the left/right, front/back, and overall postural balance were found to increase in both the male and female cases, but with no statistical significance or gender gap. However, both males and females showed a significant decrease in their back pain levels. These findings demonstrate the necessity of continuing clinical research based on the Tetrax$^{(R)}$ equipment for scientific evaluation of the effects of rehabilitation exercises on chronic lower back pain patients and their balancing ability.

Curcumin Inhibits Human Non-small Cell Lung Cancer A549 Cell Proliferation Through Regulation of Bcl-2/Bax and Cytochrome C

  • We intended to study the mechanism of the inhibitory action of curcumin on human non-small cell lung cancer A549 cell. The cell growth was determined by CCK-8 assay, and the results indicated that curcumin inhibited the cell proliferation in a concentration dependent manner. And to further confirm the relative anti-cancer mechanism of curcumin, RT-PCR was carried out to analysis the expression of relative apoptotic proteins Bax, Bcl-2. We found that curcumin could up-regulate the expression of Bax but down-regulate the expression of Bcl-2 in A549 cells. In addition, curcumin affect the mitochondrial apoptosis pathway. These results suggested that curcumin inhibited cancer cell growth through the regulation of Bcl-2/Bax and affect the mitochondrial apoptosis pathway.

삼강정립(三網鼎立) 논쟁(論爭)에 대한 소고 (Review on Argument about Three planks of the Triangular position(三網鼎立))

  • Three planks of the Triangular position theory was first introduced by Sanghallon(傷寒論) authored by Jang Gi. It is the regulation for the matter of diagnosis of three different clinical symptoms in the causes of exogenous disease. It brought two questions to the scientists. First question is what are the Wind stroke(中風), Affection by cold(傷寒) and the complex form of Wind stroke(中風) and Affection by cold(傷寒) mentioned in Sanghallon. It is related to the theoretical analysis of the causes for the outbreaks of exogenous disease. Second question is what are the characteristics of symptoms to use Gyejitang, Mahwangtang, Daecheongnyongtang according to Sanghallon? It is the matter of clinical skills for dispensing a prescription. Through the theoretically and empirically deepening processes for last two millenniums, those two questions brought us two more problems further. That is, how and by what processes the Six vital substances for humal life outbreaks disease as a energy transformation? And, how the individual peculiarities of human body as a disease container should be treated? In conclusion, it is also a matter of the existence of dialectic medical science.

멀티 스펙트럴 이미지 센서를 이용한 감자의 생육정보 예측 (Estimation of the Potato Growth Information Using Multi-Spectral Image Sensor)

  • The objective of this research was to establish the estimation method of growth information on potato using Multi-Spectral Image Sensor (MSIS) and Global Positioning System (GPS). And growth estimation map for determining a prescription map over the entire field was generated. To determine the growth model, 10 ground-truth points of areas of $4m^2$ each were selected and investigated. The growth information included stem number, crop height and SPAD value. In addition, images information involving the ground-truth points were also taken by an unmanned helicopter, and reflectance value of Green, Red, and NIR bands were calculated with image processing. Then, growth status of potato was modeled by multi-regression analysis using these reflectance value of Green, Red, and NIR. As a result, potato growth information could be detected by analyzing Green, Red, and NIR images. Stem number, crop height and SPAD value could be estimated with $R^2$ values of 0.600, 0.657 and 0.747 respectively. The generated GIS map would describe variability of the potato growth in a whole field.

Isolation and Characterization of Intestinal Immune System Modulating and Anticancer Active Fractions from the Herbal Prescriptions

  • The prescriptions (DB-1-DB-5) were prepared with the active herbal medicines, Acanthopanax senticosus, Glycyrrhiza uralensis, Polygonatum odoratum, and Cichorium intybus. The most active crude polysaccharide fraction (DB-2-3), which was isolated through the fractionation of hot-water extract from DB-2, was significantly reduced by periodate oxidation (52.7 and 63.7%) on intestinal immune system modulating and anticancer activity. When DB-2-3 was further fractionated by column chromatographies, DB-2-3IIc-2 showed the most potent activities. In addition, DB-2-3IIc stimulated the proliferation of bone marrow cells via Peyer's patch in dose-dependent pattern by oral administration. The metastasis of colon 26-M3.1 lung carcinoma had significantly inhibited in mice fed DB-2-3IIc at 1 mg/mouse (43.8%). DB-2-3IIc-2 mainly contained uronic acid (46.1%) and 42.5% of neutral sugar with a small amount of protein (7.6%), and component sugar analysis also showed that DB-2-3IIc-2 was composed Ara, Gal, and GalA (molar ratio; 0.50:0.63:1.00). It may be suggested that activities of DB-2-3IIc-2 are resulted from pectic polysaccharides containing a polygalacturonan moiety with side chain of neutral sugars, such as Ara and Gal.

항생제에 대한 지식이 소비자의 항생제 사용행태에 미치는 영향 (The Association Between Consumers' Knowledge and Behavior on Antibiotics Use for Common Cold)

  • The objective of this study is to examine the association between the knowledge and behavior of consumers on antibiotics use for common cold. Consumers' knowledge about antibiotics was measured by a questionnaire consisting of six items related to the effect of antibiotics and another three items about use of antibiotics. Telephone interview was conducted during the days between June 24 and July 2, 2009, and 1,015 persons responded the interview. Final analysis included 896 persons without missing data. Thirty six percent of respondents answered that they checked their prescriptions to ensure that antibiotics was prescribed for common cold. About 6% asked their doctors to prescribe antibiotics for common cold, and 9.7% asked them not to. More than a quarter of respondents answered that they used to take antibiotics leftover from a previous illness. Patients who knew better about the effect of antibiotics on common cold were more likely to ask doctors not to prescribe antibiotics (OR 2.30, 95% CI 1.45~3.65), or to check prescriptions (OR 1.86, 95% CI 1.40~2.46). Higher knowledge about use of antibiotics was related to low probability of asking doctors to prescribe antibiotics. This result suggests that consumers' knowledge about antibiotics can influence doctor's prescription of antibiotics for common cold.

입원 노인환자의 부적절 약물사용현황 및 용량적절성 평가 (Assessment of Inappropriate Medication Use and Dosage in Elderly Patients)

  • This study aimed to evaluate the patterns of inappropriate medication use and inappropriate dosage in elderly patients in Korea. A retrospective study was performed for the elderly 65 years or older admitted from January 2007 to December 2007 in a medical center, Seoul, Korea. Potentially inappropriate medication (PIM) use in the elderly was evaluated using Beers criteria. Eighteen drugs out of Beers criteria were included in the formulary of the institute. Inappropriate dosage was set using Beers criteria, CMS (the Centers for Medicare& Medicaid Services) guideline, Geriatric Dosage Handbook. As results, the patients with PIM were 2,172 during the study period. The commonly used inappropriate medications were drugs for the nervous system (n=1237, 44.78%), the alimentary System (n=663, 24.54%) and the cardiovascular system (n=494, 18.28%). The elderly patients with prescription of inappropriate dosage were 10% out of patients with PIMs. The commonly inappropriate dosage drugs were digoxin (n=75, 27.27%), diazepam (n=70, 22.55%) and ferrous sulfate (n=66, 24.00%). Logistic regression analysis showed the number of PIM, days of hospital stay as predictors related to inappropriate dosage use. In conclusion, CNS drugs were frequently prescribed as PIM and inappropriate dosages were identified. It is needed to develop a means of decreasing adverse drug events in elderly.
