This study utilizes PhotoVoice, a qualitative research method, to explore the life experiences of retirees by age in depth and derive the social welfare implications required for successful aging of retirees. Two participants in the study were selected in their 70s, 60s, and 50s, and 24 photos, explanations, 44 stories, and 92 data collected through group activities and personal interviews were analyzed. With the perception of successful aging, those in their 70s were "Preparing for a High Level of Social Responsibility and Dignity," those in their 60s were "Life of Social Responsibility and Service with Embarrassment and Boeun," and those in their 50s were "Life of Self-reliance with Economic Stability and Consideration." In order to prevent social problems for retirees with longer old age, research and social welfare policy support for their social jobs and volunteer positions are urgently needed, and the sooner the preparatory education is implemented so that they can prepare enough. This study is significant in that it played an important role in presenting basic data for the preparation of social welfare alternatives for retirees.
This study aims to verify the effects of the life redesign educational program based on the baby boomer (11 members of experimental group, 12 members of control group). The program was conducted for two hours two times in a week in the area of Chungnam (Total 8weeks 16sessions). First, in the result of the Wilcoxon's pairs signed-ranks test between the pre-post tests for the analysis on the program effectiveness of the experimental group of baby boomer, the baby boomer of experimental group showed an improved perception of preparing the volunteer work in the perception of preparing their old age, and there was no pre-post significant differences in the control group. In case of the experimental group, perception of the post-retirement preparation, such as a physical preparation, emotional preparation, financial preparation, volunteer work preparation and leisure activities preparation increased in average. Second, the satisfaction for the program's educational process, educational contents, educational data, educational method, instructor and the educational environment were shown to be more than 3.5 points out of 5 points in full.
For the purpose of preparing the basic data for further cancer epidemiologic study and cancer patients control, we conducted the analysis on the degree and structure of deaths from cancer in metropolitan areas of Korea with 7,934 certified cancer deaths records of Seoul, Pusan, Taegu and Incheon in 1982. The analyzed results were as follows: 1) The total number of cancer deaths in metropolitan areas were 7,934 (male: 4,749, female: 3,185) as 14.1% of deaths from all causes in the same area. 2) The rate of physician's certification on cancer deaths was 77.4% and most of cancer deaths (84.4%) occured at their home. 3) Cancer specific death rate was 51.7 per 100.000 population (male: 62.9, female: 41.9) and age-adjusted cancer death rate was 82.4 in male and 51.6 in female per 100,000 population. And the difference was statistically significant (p< 0.01). 4) Age-specific cancer death rate was generally increased with age and most of cancer deaths (male: 75% , female: 65%) occurred from 45 to 74 years old. 5) The first three orders of cancer site were stomach (32.7%), liver (28.8%), lung (11.7%) in male and stomach (30.6%), uterus (18.4%), liver (13.8%) in female. And the relative frequency of these three cancer sites among total cancer deaths was corresponded to 73.2% in male and 62.8% in female. 6) The ratio of male to female cancer death rate was 1.5:1. And the ratio was aboye 3.0 in esophagus, liver, larynx, bladder cancer and the ratio was similar to 1.0 in stomach, pancreas, leukemia, brain, colon cancer, but the ratio was reversed in gall bladder and bile duct, and thyroid cancer.
In 1968, Carpentier and his associates introduced glutaraldehyde as a compound for preparing cardiac tissue valve, and this technique has provided a considerably more suitable and durable tissue valve substitute. To increase further durability of valve tissue, Reis and his colleagues designed a flexible stent to reduce the stress on the heterogeneous tissue valve mounted. However with the advent of more innovative mechanical valve currently, many bioprosthetic valves are being substituted by mechanical valves at our department of cardiothoracic surgery because of bioprosthetic valve failure. Main cause of bioprosthetic valves failure were calcification or/and tear of tissue valves. The purpose of this retrospective study is to clarify the relationship between the patients clinical profile during implantation of tissue valves and pathologic features of the failed bioprosthetic valve. From March, 1982 through June, 1988, 53 bioprosthetic heart valves that had been ex-planted from 45 patients at the department of cardiac surgery of Yonsei University Hospital were subjected to this study. The patients were 10 to 65 year-old [mean age: 30.3 yr] with 17 males and 28 females. Re-replacements of prosthetic valves were carried out twenty nine in mitral position, eight in aortic position and eight in both aortic and mitral position simultaneously. The grading and location for calcification of valves were verified by radiograms. The calcification of the explanted valves leaflets was graded from 0 to 4 plus according to Cipriano and associates method. The types of tear and perforation of leaflet were classified into four types as Ishihara has adopted initially in 1981. In younger age group under thirty three years, explanted tissue valves were significantly more affected in terms of grades of severity of valve calcification as compared with older age group [p < 0.035]. Valve calcification appeared more severe in male as compared to female [p< 0.002]. Ionescu-Shiley bovine pericardial bioprosthetic valves showed more severe calcification than Hancock porcine tissue valves [p< 0.035]. Calcium deposit was found very prevalent at the area of commissural attachment [86 % of all]. Type I of valve rupture was shown to be related with simultaneous calcification. However, the relation of explanted valve position, duration of implanted prosthetic valve, atrial fibrillation and anticoagulant therapy to the severity of bioprosthetic valve calcification were not significantly clear statistically [p > 0.05].

This study focused on the generational change of elderly people in the future based on the changes of aging background and household structure. After 2025, when the growth rate of aging rapidly becomes prominent, the generation born before 1961, the baby boomers who were in their youth after the country's liberation, will replace the current elderly generation. This means that the characteristics and values of living of the elderly will change and not pass on to the future, and that the demand for housing will also be different. The purpose of this study is to predict the future elderly housing demand and to find out the issues of housing support for elderly people and necessary institutional support items. For this purpose, the preliminary elderly people are surveyed and analyzed for their present housing condition, perception of old age, housing plan, welfare facilities and demand for living services. The results of this study are meaningful in laying the groundwork for predicting the demand for housing and living support of the elderly in the future and proposing suggestions and preparing related systems.
The need for preparation for old life has been further increased due to the increase of the elderly population and changes in economic conditions today. The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between income instability and the degree of preparation for old life and satisfaction of current life. The key variables were extracted through prior study review. And the data collected through the survey were statistically analyzed with a structural equation model. The analysis found that the indirect effect of the current income risk on the satisfaction of current life through the preparation for old life had a significant negative effect under the statistically significant level of 0.05. However, it was found that the direct effects of current income risk on the satisfaction of current life were not statistically significant. An additional analysis was conducted by dividing the age, the number of dependents by two groups respectively. To summarize the results, preparation for old life played a significant role as a prerequisite for improving the satisfaction of current life. And the variability(risk) of current income played an important role in preparing for old life. At this time, the degree of relevance between the factors(potential variables) differed somewhat between the two groups. The results of this analysis will be meaningful in providing basic source of data to prepare for a satisfactory life in each individual's current situation. This study, meanwhile, has limitations that have only been done with cross-sectional analysis and would like to analyze time-series changes in the future.
Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the relationship between the number of remaining teeth and bone health status among adults over 65 years old. Methods: The study subjects were 1,843 adults over 65 years old drawn from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) in 2008-2010. Oral health status included the number of remaining teeth, and prosthetic appliance status. Bone health statuses were assessed using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). Bone health statuses were classified into normal (T-score ${\geq}-1.0$), osteopenia (-2.5 < T-score < -1.0), and osteoporosis (T-score ${\leq}-2.5$). Complex samples chi-square test was used to estimate the relationship between the number of remaining teeth and bone health status, and related factors included in the model were analyzed with the complex samples logistic regression analysis. Results: Using the multinomial logistic regression analytic method, the elderly having 20 or more remaining teeth and those having less than 20 remaining teeth with prosthesis were compared. The latter group had 1.89 times higher rate of being diagnosed as having osteoporosis. Conclusions: This study suggests that oral health is an important factor for geriatric osteoporosis. Therefore, in order to prevent fractures due to osteoporosis and osteoporosis in old age, it is necessary to be aware of the relationship between oral health and osteoporosis, and oral health should be considered when preparing preventive management strategies.
The objectives of this study were to determine the consumption pattern and importance of Kimchi in our meals, and the preference of Kimchi. The 77.0% of the housewife respondents were preparing Kimchi at home. The reasons for not making Kimchi were ‘don't have time’(39.4%), ‘don't know how to make Kimchi’(18.2%) and ‘don't eat much’(18.2%). The amounts of daily Kimchi intake of the respondents were ‘less than 50g’(42.3%) or ‘50-100g’(29.8%). They are Kimchi because it was ‘delicious’(48.4%) or ‘habitual’(39.5%). The 70.0% of the respondents answered that Kimchi was important in each meal. The most respondents favored ‘moderate’ in the degree of fermentation(48.1%), hot taste(65.0%) and salty taste(72.4%). As the age of the respondents increased, they favored less sour, less hot and less salty taste. Baechu Kimchi(4.15), Chonggak Kimchi(3.89), Dongchimi(3.85), Kkaktugi(3.74), water Kimchi(3.67) were preferred by the respondents. The 73.97% of the respondents preferred Kimchi Jjigye. The 10- to 19-years old respondents preferred Kimchi Jjigye(52.8%), Kimchi pan cake(24.5%) and fried rice with Kimchi(17.0%).
This study focused on real estate rental income, which is being interested as a means of preparing for old age in the age of low growth and aging. Rental income is seen to function as a safety net of society at a time when it is necessary to live a difficult old age due to the disconnection of income and the extension of the average life span. Therefore, this study conducted the following study on 1,025 households that own rental real estate nationwide. First, the relationship between the characteristics of the household of the rental real estate owner and the real estate rental income was analyzed, and second, it examined whether there is a difference in rental income between the group that engages in income activities other than rental income and the group that only has rental income without income activities. As a result of the analysis, among the demographic and sociological characteristics, gender and spouse were identified as significant variables in rental income. Among the economic characteristics, income and total debt were found to be significant variables. In the case of income activities, rental income was low, and rental income was high when the total debt was high. However, if interest rates rise and the economic recession is prolonged due to unpredictable causes, the owner may suffer from double-use. In preparation for this, it is necessary to review real estate policy alternatives such as easing the period of real estate holdings.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the physical characteristics and instrumental activities of daily living(IADL) of the elderly (85+). The subjects were three-hundred elderly people over the age of 85, living in Kyungpook Sung-Ju area who have no problems in daily living. The survey on anthropometric measures and IADL were carried out by individual measurement and interviews using measuring devices and questionnaires. The subject group of the study was composed of 27% males and 73% females, the average age being 87 years old. Notable physical features of the subjects include considerably short statues and small physiques compared to the average Korean elder. The mean Body Mass Index(BMI) was 20.9. The average percentage of body fat in male and female was 21.7% and 29.5% respectively, and the average waist/hip ratio(WHR) was 0.9 and 0.85 respectively. The percentage of the subjects who were able to perform all the IADL was 51% in males and 25% in females. The male subjects were more capable than the females in all the IADL except for preparing meals. BMI showed positive correlations withy weight(r=699), WHR(r=0.157), body fat percentage(r=0.57), lean body mass(r=0368) and total body water(r=0.368). WHR also had positive correlation with weight(r=0.184), BMI(r=0.157), lean body mass(r=0.149) and total body water (r=0.148). Body fat percentage had a positive correlation with weight(r=0.147) and BMI(r=0.265) and total body water(r=0.265). In summary, the elderly(85+) in the Sung-Ju area had considerably smaller physiques than the average Korean elderly and showed a normal range of BMI in average. The IADL of the elderly(85+) appeared to have a positive correlation with lean body mass and total body water and a negative correlation with body fat percentage.
