민감도 해석을 통해 열손실율이 증가함에 따라 Thermal NO 기구와 Re-burning NO 기구는 NOx 저감에 크게 기여하는 반면, Prompt NO 기구와 $N_2O$-경유 NO 기구는 오히려 NOx 증가에 기여함을 확인하였다.

  • Numerical simulations of freely propagating flames burning stoichiometric CH$_4$/O$_2$/$N_2$mixtures are performed at atmospheric pressure in order to understand the effect of the $O_2$enrichment level on CH$_4$/Air flame. A chemical kinetic mechanism is employed, the adopted scheme involving 54 gas-phase species and 632 forward reactions. The calculated flame speeds are compared with the experiments for the flames established at several $O_2$enrichment level, the results of which is in excellent agreement. As a result of the increased $O_2$enrichment level from 0.21 to 1, the mole fraction of CO in the burred gas is increased. The flame speed and the temperature in the burned gas are also increased, but the thickness of the flame is severely shrunken in the preheat region. The maximum of the calculated EINO is obtained around 0.6 and 0.7 of the $O_2$enrichment level in cases of flames for fuel-lean mixtures.

  • The NOx emission characteristics of DME in laminar coaxial jet and counterflow nonpremixed flames were investigated using experimental and numerical approaches, respectively. The flame structure and NOx emission of DME were compared with those of $C_2H_6$ and $C_3H_8$. The DME flame was calculated using the Kaiser's mechanism, while the $C_2H_6$ and $C_3H_8$ flames were calculated using the $C_3$ mechanism. These mechanisms were combined with the modified Miller-Bowman mechanism for the analysis of NOx. Experimental results show in coaxial jet flame that DME flame has the characteristics of partial premixed flame and the flame length decreases up to 1/3 than that of $C_3H_8$ in the same condition of fuel mass flowrate. Then, the NOx emission of DME decreases to 40% approximately, comparing with that of $C_3H_8$. In the calculated results of counterflow nonpremixed flame, DME flame shows the $EI_{NO}$ decreases up to 50% approximately than those of$ C_2H_6$ and $C_3H_8$ flames when the equivalent fuels are consumed per unit mass and time. Although the overall NOx reaction path of DME is similar with other hydrocarbon fuels, it can be identified that DME flame has a distinct NO reduction mechanism due to the reburning NO chemistry in fuel rich region. From these results, we can conclude that the different NOx emission characteristics of DME flame with other hydrocarbon fuels are attributed to not the temperature increase and the activation of NO reactions due to O atom in DME fuel but the rapid processes of pyrolysis/oxidation.

  • Influence of fuel concentration gradient was investigated near flame extinction limit in buoyancy-suppressed non-premixed counterflow flame with triple co-flow burner. The use of He curtain flow produced a microgravity level of $10^{-2}-10^{-3}g$ in He-diluted non-premixed counter triple co-flow flame experiments. Flame stability map was presented based on flame extinction and oscillation near extinction limit. The stability map via critical diluent mole fraction with global strain rate was represented by varying outer and inner He-diluted mole fractions. The flame extinction modes could be classified into five: an extinction through the shrinkage of the outmost edge flame forward the flame center with and without self-excitation, respectively ((I) and (II)), an extinction via the rapid expansion of a flame hole while the outmost edge flame is stationary (III), both the outermost and the center edge flames oscillate, and then a donut shaped flame is formed or the flame is entirely extinguished (IV), a shrinkage of the outermost edge flame without self-excitation followed by shrinking or sustain the inner flame (V).

  • Usually, we use the flame thickness and turbulence scale to classify the flame structure on a phase diagram of turbulent combustion. The flame structure in turbulence is still in debate, and many studies have been done. Since the flame motion is rapid and its reaction zone thickness is very thin, it is difficult to estimate the flame thickness. Here, we propose a new approach to determine the reaction zone thickness based on ion current signals obtained by an electrostatic probe, which has enough time and space resolution to detect flame fluctuation. Since the signal depends on the flow condition and flame curvature, it may be difficult to analyze directly these signals and examine the flame characteristics. However, ion concentration is high only in the region where hydrocarbon-oxygen reactions occur, and we can specify the reaction zone. Based on the reaction zone existing, we estimate the reaction zone thickness. We obtain the thickness of flames both in the cyclone-jet combustor and on a Bunsen burner, compared with theoretically predicted value, the Zeldovich thickness. Results show that the experimentally obtained thickness is almost the same as the Zeldovich thickness. It is concluded that this approach can be used to obtain the local flame structure for modeling turbulent combustion.

  • A constant-volume combustion chamber is developed to measure the burnt gas temperature over the wide ranges of equivalence ratio from 1.5 to 2.7 and pressure from 0.1 to 2.7 and pressure from 0.1 to 6 MPa by two-color method. The combustion temperature is also calculated by the conventional two-region model. The premixed fuel rich propane-oxygen-inert gas mixtures under high pressures are simultaneously ignited by eight spark plugs located on the circumference of combustion chamber with 45 degree intervals. The eight converging flames compress the end gases to high pressures. The transmissiv-ity in the chamber center during the final stage of combustion at the highest pressure is measured by in situ laser extinction method. Comparisons are made with the combustion temperatures between two-color method and two-region model. It is found that the burnt gas temperature mea-sured by two-color method is higher than that calculated by two-region model because of being the negative temperature gradient on the calculation and the temperature distribution of light path-length on the measurement and the burnt gas temperature for the turbulent combustion is higher than that of the laminar combustion under the same conditions because the heat loss for turbulent combustion is lower due to the shorter combustion period.

  • We investigated a uniform temperature zone, produced by double flame structure of a co flow CH4/air partially premixed flame, to be used as a temperature calibration source for laser diagnostics. A broadband N2 CARS(coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy) system with a modeless laser was used for temperature measurement. When the stoichiometric ratio was 1.5, we found the uniform temperature zone in radial direction of the flame of which the averaged temperature was 2110 K with standard deviation 24 K. In the stoichiometric ratio range between 2.0 and 2.5, we found very stable temperature-varying zones in vertical direction at the center of the flame. The size of the zone was approximately 15 mm and it covered a temperature range from 300 K to 1900 K. We also suggest that this zone can be used as a calibration source for 2-D PLIF(planar laser induced flurescence) temperature measurement.

  • The effects of equivalence ratio and pressure on burnt gas temperature in premixed fuel rich propane-oxygen-inert gas combustion are investigated over the wide ranges of equivalence ration from 1.5 to 2.7 and pressure from 0.1 to 7 MPa by using a specially designed disk -type constant-voume combustion chamber, The premixtures are simultaneously ignited by eight spark plugs located on the circumference of combustion chamber with 45 degree interals. The eight converging flames compress the end gases to high pressures. The burnt gas temperature is meausured by the nmodifie dtow-colr pyrometry method. The transmissivity in the chamber center during the final stage of combustion at the hightest pressure is meausred by in situ laser extinction method. It is found that a temperature difference between the burnt gas temperature measured by mofidied and conventrational two-color method is 10 to 20 K, but the accuracy of the modified two-color methdo is higher if the local transmissivity in observed region is uniform , and the combustion at higher pressures results gas density conditions and the burnt gas temperature increases as the volume fraction of argon is increased because the specific heat of argon is lower compared to that of nitrogen with a constant equivalence ratio.

  • The temperature field of a counterflow non-premixed flame is investigated using thermocouples of two sizes. A thermal balance is performed on the thermocouple in order to calculate the magnitude of the radiation corrections involved. Both the thermocouple wire and bead are separately considered to be the relevant thermal surface to which convective heat transfer takes place, and from which radiation lasses occur. The flame is also simulated by using a detailed chemical kinetic mechanism in a previously developed computer code. The local thermo-physical properties of the gas mixture, required to calculate the corrections, are determined both from the simulation, and by approximating the properties of the mixture as those of molecular nitrogen at the measured temperatures. It is concluded that the thermocouple wire is the appropriate thermal surface to which radiation corrections apply, in the absence of information about the gas mixture, its properties can be reasonably approximated by those of nitrogen rm ($N_2$), and the radiation corrections are very sensitive to misalignments in the temperature and velocity fields.

  • In gas turbines, excess air for combustion is available and therefore lean premixed combustion is the most promising approach to the significant reduction of thermal NOx emissions. At lean conditions, however, flame stability is inherently worse and hence combustion tends to be incomplete. Efforts have been devoted toward extending the operating range of complete combustion at leaner conditions. One of them is the lean-lean two-stage combustion where lean to ultra-lean secondary mixtures are mixed with the hot burned gas from the primary stage. Conventional flame combustion or flameless reaction are initiated depending on the conditions of the secondary zone. In the first part of the present study, the effects of fuel injection on the emissions and flame stability were investigated for a single tubular flame, In the second part, the emissions and flame stability were studied for a two-stage combustor with secondary mixture injected through the tangential slots on a cylindrical combustor wall. The effects of the ratio of air flow rates to the primary and secondary zones on the emissions and combustion characteristics were investigate.
