For the non-premixed interacting jet flames, it has been reported that if eight small nozzles are arranged along the circle of $40{\sim}72$ times the diameter of single jet, the flames are not extinguished even in 200m/s. In this research, experiments were extended to the partially premixed cases to reduce both flame temperature and NOx emission. Nine nozzles were used- eight was evenly located along the perimeter of the imaginary circle and one at the geometric centre. The space between nozzles, S, the equivalence ratio, ${\phi}$, the exit velocity and the role of the jet from the centre nozzle were considered. Normally, flame was lifted and flame base was located inside the imaginary circle made by the nozzle. As nozzles went away from each other, blowout velocity increased and then decreased. The maximum blowout velocity diminished with the addition of air to the fuel stream. When the fuel and/or oxidizer were not fed through the centre nozzle, the maximum blowout velocity obtained by varying S and ${\phi}$ was around 160m/s. Optimum nozzle separation distance at which peak blowout velocity obtained also decreased with ${\phi}$ decrease. Flame base became leaner as approaching to the blowout. It seemed that lots of air was supplied to the flame stabilizing region by the entrainment and partially premixing. To approve this idea and to enhance the blowout velocity, fuel was supplied to the centre region. With the small amount of fuel through the centre nozzle, partially premixed flame could be sustained till sonic velocities. It seemed that the stabilizing mechanism in partially premixed interacting flame was different from that of non-premixed case because one was stabilized by the fuel supply through the centre nozzle but the other destabilized.
The effects of EGR and premixedness on NO formation have been numerically investigated. The flame structure is classified into three categories; premixed flame($=1)$, rich/lean premixed flame(${\alpha}=0.6$ and 0.8) and diffusion flame(${\alpha}=0$). NO formation/destruction mechanisms are assorted to thermal, reburn and Fenimore mechanisms. The temperature of unburned gas is arranged to 298 and 500 K to have access to the condition in a real internal combustion engine. The results show that all three NO formation/destruction reaction rates in the fuel rich flame zone could be decreased by EGR for rich/lean premixed flames, while those in the fuel lean flame zone are not significantly changed. Near the stagnation plane, however, only the thermal NO reaction rate is decreased. The contribution of reburn and Fenimore mechanisms for the net NO production becomes less significant as the premixedness of a flame increases. The larger amount of NO reduction with EGR is expected under the higher temperature and/or higher fuel/air premixedness conditions due to the increased contribution of the thermal mechanism. The role of Fenimore and reburn mechanisms could be important for rich premixed and diffusion flames; therefore, the effect of EGR on NO reduction could vary with fuel/air premixedness. The premixedness of a partially premixed flame changes the flame structure and could affect the NO production characteristics.
Adding small amounts of air to the fuel is used in many commercial combustors to avoid sooty flame. But partially premixed jet flame has lower blowout velocity, $u_{b.o}$, than nonpremixed one. Increasing blowout limit would be one of the key factors to develope highly intense compact combustion devices. Swirling flow enhances fuel and air mixing and induces a highly turbulent recirculation zone, which helps flame stabilization. It was known that NOx emission decreases with swirl on the proper range of swirl number. And it was shown that the flame interaction in multiple jets also increases $u_{b.o}$ owing to the internal recirculation and reduces NO emission. If the effects of swirl and flame interaction are combined together in partially premixed flame, both $u_{b.o}$ increasement and NOx emission reduction could be achieved. Blowout limits of partially premixed interacting propane flame in the swirling air coflow are investigated experimentally. The results show that the flame is not extinguished up to the experimental limits, 210 m/s, at the swirl number of 0.32 and $X_{F,o}$ = 0.46.
Important role of chemical interaction in flame extinction was numerically investigated in downstream interaction among lean(rich) and lean(rich) premixed as well as partially premixed $H_2$-air and CO-air flames. The strain rate varied from 30 to $5917s^{-1}$ until interacting flame could not be sustained anymore. Flame stability diagrams mapping lower and upper limit fuel concentrations for flame extinction as a function of strain rate are presented. Highly stretched interacting flames were survived only within two islands in the flame stability map where partially premixed mixture consisted of rich $H_2$-air flame, extremely lean CO-air flame, and a diffusion flame. Further increase in strain rate finally converges to two points. Appreciable amount of hydrogen in the side of lean $H_2$-air flame also oxidized the CO penetrated from CO-air flame, and this reduced flame speed of the $H_2$-air flame, leading to flame extinction. At extremely high strain rates, interacting flames were survived only by a partially premixed flame such that it consisted of a very rich $H_2$-air flame, an extremely lean CO-air flame, and a diffusion flame. In such a situation, both the weaker $H_2$-air and CO-air flames were parasite on the stronger diffusion flame such that it could lead to flame extinction in the situation of weakening the stronger diffusion flame. Particular concerns are focused on important role of chemical interaction in flame extinction was also discussed in detail.

An experimental study of the flame response in a turbulent premixed combustor has been conducted with room temperature, atmospheric pressure inlet conditions using premixed natural gas. The fuel is premixed with the air upstream of a choked inlet to avoid equivalence ratio fluctuations. Therefore the observed flame response is only the result of the imposed velocity fluctuations, which are produced using a variable speed siren. Measurements are made of the velocity fluctuation in the nozzle using hot wire anemometry and of the heat release fluctuation in the combustor using chemiluminescence emission. The results are analyzed to determine the phase and gain of the flame transfer function as a function of the modulation frequency. Of particular interest is the effect of flame structure on the flame response predictions and measurements. The results show that both the gain and the phase of flame transfer function are closely associated with the flame length and structure, which is dependent upon the upstream flow perturbation as well as equivalence ratio in the current study.
Structure of edge flame established in a mixing layer, formed between two uniformly flowing pure $CH_4$ and pure $O_2$ streams, is numerically investigated by employing a detailed methane-oxidation mechanism. The numerical results exhibited the most outstanding distinction of using pure oxygen in the fuel-rich premixed-flame front, through which the carbon-containing compound is found to leak mainly in the form of CO instead of HC compounds, contrary to the rich $CH_4-air$ premixed flames in which $CH_4$ as well as $C_2H_m$ leakage can occur. Moreover, while passing through the rich premixed flame, a major route for CO production, in addition to the direct $CH_4$ decomposition, is found to be $C_2H_m$ compound formation followed by their decomposition into CO. Beyond the rich premixed flame front, CO is further oxidized into $CO_2$ in a broad diffusion-flame-like reaction zone located around moderately fuel-rich side of the stoichiometric mixture by the OH radical from the fuel-lean premixed-flame front. Since the secondary CO production through $C_2H_m$ decomposition has a relatively strong reaction intensity, an additional heat-release branch appears and the resulting heat-release profile can no longer be seen as a tribrachial structure.

An experimental study on flame lift-off characteristics of propane jet flame highly diluted with nitrogen has been conducted introducing acoustic forcing with a tube resonant frequency. A flame stability curve is attained according to forcing strength and nozzle exit velocity for $N_2$ diluted flames. Flame lift-off behavior with forcing strength and nozzle exit velocity is globally categorized into three; a well premixed behavior caused by a collapsible mixing for large forcing strength, a coexistent behavior of well-premixed and edge flames interacting with well-organized inner fuel vortices for moderate forcing strengths, and edge flame behavior for small forcing strengths. Special focus is concentrated on the coexistent behavior of the flame base in lifted flame since this may give a hint to a possibility which the flame base behaves like a well-mixed premixed flame in highly turbulent lifted flames. It is also shown that the acoustic forcing to self-pulsating laminar lifted flame affects flame lift-off behavior considerably which is closely related to downstream flow velocity, mixture strength, effective fuel Lewis number, and flame stretch.
Recent studies of a triple flame suggested that the presence of triple point (triple line in this planar configuration) could explain the mechanisms of stable fuel-lean premixed flames with equivalence ratio lower than the flammability limit. In the present study, for better understanding of the stability mechanisms of fuel rich-lean premixed flames, the fuel-rich flames were replaced with hot coils that will provide heat flux into the fuel-lean flames. It is found that the fuel-lean premixed flames could be stabilized without any triple point (triple line): however, the equivalence ratio limit for stable fuel-lean flame in this case is higher than that of the present work with the presence of fuel-rich flames. These results demonstrate that heat flux coming from fuel-rich flames should be considered in order to properly understand the roll of a triple flame for stable fuel rich-lean flames.
Flame characteristics in a double concentric burner has been studied experimentally. Air is supplied through a central nozzle, methane/air premixture is supplied in a inner annular part, and coflowing shield air is supplied to minimize outside disturbances. Depending on flow rate and concentration, various flame shapes can be observed. As the flow rate difference between central air jet and annular premixed jet is varied, several distinctive flames are observed. Conditions of partially premixed flames are further investigated; nozzle attached rich premixed flame, inner lifted flame, and outer lifted flame. Using the Abel transformation of digitized images of flames, cross- sectional images of flames can be obtained, from which overall structure of flames can be identified. PLIF measurement of OR radical was also conducted. OR radicals were mainly distributed in diffusion flame region. From the difference of OR distribution between nozzle attached and lifted flames, similarity of OR distribution between tribrachial flame and lifted flames in this study are observed.
