  • The probability density functions (PDF) of temperature were measured by coherent anti-Stokes Raman Spectroscopy (CARS) in flames of gas turbine combustor sector rig of an aero-engine. The combustor was operated at simulated ground idle conditions with standard kerosene fuel. Temperature PDFs had been measured near fuel nozzle with change of rotation of a swirler and existence of a prefilmer. The characteristic features of temperature PDFs showed the variation of combustion configurations at four experimental conditions. Without a prefilmer, large recirculation of high temperature gas was expected in the co-flow condition and un vaporized fuel fragments were detected in the counter-flow condition. With a prefilmer, the enhanced mixing increased combustion intensity near fuel nozzle in the counter-flow condition and the flame was attached far from the fuel nozzle in the co-flow condition.

  • In this paper, the test and result of flow and combustion for 21AFR lean fuel models are described. The necessity to develop the low emission combustor has been issued from the concern on the increase of green house and the destruction of ozone layer. To evaluate the flow and combustion performance of new designed 21AFR lean modules, the hydraulic tests in stereo lithographic airflows models, the low pressure combustion tests in three injectors model for weak extinction and ignition and the high pressure combustion tests in single sector for NOx, SAE and efficiency are performed. The low pressure tests reveal that the governing parameters in weak extinction and ignition at atmospheric condition are prefilmer length, swirl flow rotation direction, secondary swirl angle and flow split. As a results of combustion test at high pressure, the efficiency and smoke level are satisfied with performance targets, but EINOx of 17.8 is higher than target value of 13.1. The high pressure tests show that the main parameters influenced on NOx are primary swirl angle, swirl flow rotation direction, heatshield exit angle and liner mixing hole location.

  • Numerical study of air-blast type injector for low emission aircraft engines was conducted. Volume-of-fluids approach was used to track interface of fuel and air. Primary atomization of fuel stream was visualized, and thickness and mean velocity at the injector exit was calculated. Liquid fuel injected from fuel slots joined together as a thin film on preflimer surface, and interacted with swirling air. As instability on the fuel surface increased, separation of fuel as ligaments and droplets occured. The film thickness and velocity were used to as fuel injection boundary condition for reactive flow simulation. Primary reaction zone was formed in vicinity of the fuel nozzle, creating a stable flame inside the combustor.

  • Performance of a gas turbine combustor installed in a test facility has been studied by measuring spatially- and temporally-resolved temperature distributions using multiplex CARS technique. 500 CARS temperatures were determined at each measuring point to obtain a histogram of temperature distribution. Experiments were carried out in the aero-engine combustor sector rig burning standard kerosene fuel. The histograms were obtained around a triple-sector double annular rig running in ground idle conditions, showing features of flow mixing within the rig. The temperature histograms that prove the existence of high temperatures above 1900 K provide us valuable information to improve the design of the combustor structure suppressing NOx generation in turbulent combustion processes. The effects of swirl direction and pre-filmer on gas turbine combustion were investigated. When we installed radial swirls, a large recirculation zone was formed by the fuel module regardless of swirl directions and the pre-filmer installation. It is found that the swirl direction affects the shape of the reverse flow zone, however. Also, an attempt to estimate the flow field and flame structure is made using the histogram of temperature determined with the CARS technique.
