Streamflow prediction is a critical task in water resources management and essential for planning and decision-making purposes. However, the streamflow prediction is challenging due to the complexity and non-linear nature of hydrological processes. The transfer learning is a powerful technique that enables a model to transfer knowledge from a source domain to a target domain, improving model performance with limited data in the target domain. In this study, we apply the transfer learning using the Informer model, which is a state-of-the-art deep learning model for streamflow prediction. The model was trained on a large-scale hydrological dataset in the source basin and then fine-tuned using a smaller dataset available in the target basin to predict the streamflow in the target basin. The results demonstrate that transfer learning using the Informer model significantly outperforms the traditional machine learning models and even other deep learning models for streamflow prediction, especially when the target domain has limited data. Moreover, the results indicate the effectiveness of streamflow prediction when knowledge transfer is used to improve the generalizability of hydrologic models in data-sparse regions.
The objective of this study is to analyze uncertainties of ensemble-based streamflow prediction method for model parameters and input data. ESP (Ensemble Streamflow Prediction) and BAYES-ESP (Bayesian-ESP) based on ABCD rainfall-runoff model were selected as streamflow prediction method. GLUE (Generalized Likelihood Uncertainty Estimation) was applied for the analysis of parameter uncertainty. The analysis of input uncertainty was performed according to the duration of meteorological scenarios for ESP. The result showed that parameter uncertainty was much more significant than input uncertainty for the ensemble-based streamflow prediction. It also indicated that the duration of observed meteorological data was appropriate to using more than 20 years. And the BAYES-ESP was effective to reduce uncertainty of ESP method. It is concluded that this analysis is meaningful for elaborating characteristics of ESP method and error factors of ensemble-based streamflow prediction method.

This study attempted to improve the accuracy of streamflow and baseflow prediction of Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) by applying baselfow recession constants for each sub-watershed. This study set two different scenarios (S1 and S2) to evaluate the impact of application of baseflow recession constants for each sub-watershed on streamflow prediction. In S1, Only the baseflow recession constant obtained from the streamflow station located in the final outlet of study area was applied for whole sub-watersheds. In S2, baseflow recession constants obtained from six different streamflow stations were applied for each sub-watershed. Then, baseflow was separated form the measured streamflow data and the predicted streamflow of S1 and S2 using Web-based Hydrograph Analysis Tool (WHAT). The results showed Nash-Sutcliff efficiency (NSE) and $R^2$ of S2 were a little higher than these of S1 in both streamflow and baseflow prediction results. However, it is important that S2 reflected physical meaning of baseflow recess. Also, recession part of hydrograph in S2 was calibrated better than that of S1 compared to the measured hydrograph.
Since the majority of streamflow during dry periods is provided by groundwater storage, the streamflow depends on a basin moisture state recharged from rainfall during wet periods. This hydrologic characteristics dives good condition to predict long-term streamflow if the basin state like groundwater recharge is known in advance. The objective of this study is to examine groundwater recharge effect to monthly streamflow, and to attempt monthly streamflow prediction using estimated groundwater recharge. The ground water recharge is used as an independent variable with streamflow and precipitation to construct multiple regression models for the prediction. Correlation analysis was performed to assess the effect of groundwater carry-over to streamflow and to establish the associations among independent variables. The predicted streamflow shows that the multiple regression model involved groundwater recharge gives improved results comparing to the model only using streamflow and precipitation as independent variables. In addition, this paper shows that the prediction model with the effect of groundwater carry-over taken into account can be developed using only precipitation.

The mid-range streamflow forecast was performed using NWP(Numerical Weather Prediction) provided by KMA. The NWP consists of RDAPS for 48-hour forecast and GDAPS for 240-hour forecast. To enhance the accuracy of the NWP, QPM to downscale the original NWP and Quantile Mapping to adjust the systematic biases were applied to the original NWP output. The applicability of the suggested streamflow prediction system which was verified in Geum River basin. In the system, the streamflow simulation was computed through the long-term continuous SSARR model with the rainfall prediction input transform to the format required by SSARR. The RQPM of the 2-day rainfall prediction results for the period of Jan. 1~Jun. 20, 2006, showed reasonable predictability that the total RQPM precipitation amounts to 89.7% of the observed precipitation. The streamflow forecast associated with 2-day RQPM followed the observed hydrograph pattern with high accuracy even though there occurred missing forecast and false alarm in some rainfall events. However, predictability decrease in downstream station, e.g. Gyuam was found because of the difficulties in parameter calibration of rainfall-runoff model for controlled streamflow and reliability deduction of rating curve at gauge station with large cross section area. The 10-day precipitation prediction using GQPM shows significantly underestimation for the peak and total amounts, which affects streamflow prediction clearly. The improvement of GDAPS forecast using post-processing seems to have limitation and there needs efforts of stabilization or reform for the original NWP.
Since the accuracy of climate forecast information has improved from better understanding of the climatic system, particularly, from the better understanding of ENSO and the improvement in meteorological models, the forecasted climate information is becoming the important clue for streamflow prediction. This study investigated the available climate forecast information to improve the extended streamflow prediction in Korea, such as MIMI(Monthly Industrial Meteorological Information) and GDAPS(Global Data Assimilation and Prediction) and measured their accuracies. Both MIMI and the 10-day forecast of GDAPS were superior to a naive forecasts and peformed better for the flood season than for the dry season, thus it was proved that such climate forecasts would be valuable for the flood season. This study then forecasted the monthly inflows to Chungju Dam by using MIMI and GDAPS. For MIMI, we compared three cases: All, Intersection, Union. The accuracies of all three cases are better than the naive forecast and especially, Extended Streamflow Predictions(ESPs) with the Intersection and with Union scenarios were superior to that with the All scenarios for the flood season. For GDAPS, the 10-day ahead streamflow prediction also has the better accuracy for the flood season than for the dry season. Therefore, this study proved that using the climate information such as MIMI and GDAPS to reduce the meteorologic uncertainty can improve the accuracy of the extended streamflow prediction for the flood season.

Streamflow forecasting plays a crucial role in water resource control, especially in highly urbanized areas that are very vulnerable to flooding during heavy rainfall event. In addition to providing the accurate prediction, the evaluation of effects and importance of the input predictors can contribute to water manager. Recently, machine learning techniques have applied their advantages for modeling complex and nonlinear hydrological processes. However, the techniques have not considered properly the importance and uncertainty of the predictor variables. To address these concerns, we applied the GA-BART, that integrates a genetic algorithm (GA) with the Bayesian additive regression tree (BART) model for hourly streamflow forecasting and analyzing input predictors. The Jungrang urban basin was selected as a case study and a database was established based on 39 heavy rainfall events during 2003 and 2020 from the rain gauges and monitoring stations. For the goal of this study, we used a combination of inputs that included the areal rainfall of the subbasins at current time step and previous time steps and water level and streamflow of the stations at time step for multistep-ahead streamflow predictions. An analysis of multiple datasets including different input predictors was performed to define the optimal set for streamflow forecasting. In addition, the GA-BART model could reasonably determine the relative importance of the input variables. The assessment might help water resource managers improve the accuracy of forecasts and early flood warnings in the basin.

Streamflow prediction is a very vital disaster mitigation approach for effective flood management and water resources planning. Lately, torrential rainfall caused by climate change has been reported to have increased globally, thereby causing enormous infrastructural loss, properties and lives. This study evaluates the contribution of rainfall to streamflow prediction in normal and peak rainfall scenarios, typical of the recent flood at Piney Resort in Vernon, Hickman County, Tennessee, United States. Daily streamflow, water level, and rainfall data for 20 years (2000-2019) from two USGS gage stations (03602500 upstream and 03599500 downstream) of the Piney River watershed were obtained, preprocesssed and fitted with Long short term memory (LSTM) model. Tensorflow and Keras machine learning frameworks were used with Python to predict streamflow values with a sequence size of 14 days, to determine whether the model could have predicted the flooding event in August 21, 2021. Model skill analysis showed that LSTM model with full data (water level, streamflow and rainfall) performed better than the Naive Model except some rainfall models, indicating that only rainfall is insufficient for streamflow prediction. The final LSTM model recorded optimal NSE and RMSE values of 0.68 and 13.84 m3/s and predicted peak flow with the lowest prediction error of 11.6%, indicating that the final model could have predicted the flood on August 24, 2021 given a peak rainfall scenario. Adequate knowledge of rainfall patterns will guide hydrologists and disaster prevention managers in designing efficient early warning systems and policies aimed at mitigating flood risks.

Monthly streanflow of watersheds is one of the most important elements for the planning, design, and management of water resources development projects, e.g., determination of storage requirement of reservoirs and control of release-water in lowflow rivers. Modeling of longterm runoff is theoretically based on water-balance analysis for a certain time interval. The effect of the casual factors of rainfall, evaporation, and soil-moisture storage on streamflow might be explained by multiple regression analysis. Using the basic concepts of water-balance and regression analysis, it was possible to develop a generalized model called the Regionalized Regression Model for Monthly Streamflow in Korean Watersheds. Based on model verification, it is felt that the model can be reliably applied to any proposed station in Korean watersheds to estimate monthly streamflow for the planning, design, and management of water resources development projects, especially those involving irrigation. Modeling processes and properties are summarized as follows; 1. From a simplified equation of water-balance on a watershed a regression model for monthly streamflow using the variables of rainfall, pan evaporation, and previous-month streamflow was formulated. 2. The hydrologic response of a watershed was represented lumpedly, qualitatively, and deductively using the regression coefficients of the water-balance regression model. 3. Regionalization was carried out to classify 33 watersheds on the basis of similarity through cluster analysis and resulted in 4 regional groups. 4. Prediction equations for the regional coefficients were derived from the stepwise regression analysis of watershed characteristics. It was also possible to explain geographic influences on streamflow through those prediction equations. 5. A model requiring the simple input of the data for rainfall, pan evaporation, and geographic factors was developed to estimate monthly streamflow at ungaged stations. The results of evaluating the performance of the model generally satisfactory.
