It is important for 0-6 hour nowcasting to provide for a high-quality initial condition in a meso-scale atmospheric model by a data assimilation of several observation data. The polarimetric radar data is expected to be assimilated into the forecast model, because the radar has a possibility of measurements of the types, the shapes, and the size distributions of hydrometeors. In this paper, an impact on rainfall prediction of the data assimilation of hydrometeor types (i.e. raindrop, graupel, snowflake, etc.) is evaluated. The observed information of hydrometeor types is estimated using the fuzzy logic algorism. As an implementation, the cloud-resolving nonhydrostatic atmospheric model, CReSS, which has detail microphysical processes, is employed as a forecast model. The local ensemble transform Kalman filter, LETKF, is used as a data assimilation method, which uses an ensemble of short-term forecasts to estimate the flowdependent background error covariance required in data assimilation. A heavy rainfall event occurred in Okinawa in 2008 is chosen as an application. As a result, the rainfall prediction accuracy in the assimilation case of both hydrometeor types and the Doppler velocity and the radar echo is improved by a comparison of the no assimilation case. The effects on rainfall prediction of the assimilation of hydrometeor types appear in longer prediction lead time compared with the effects of the assimilation of radar echo only.
The purpose of this study was to estimate of soil loss form hillslope using WEPP(Water Erosion Prediction Project) model. WEPP model was developed for predicting soil erosion and deposition, fundamentally based on soil erosion prediction technology. The model for predicting sediment yields from single storms was applied to a tested watershed. Surface runoff is calculated by kinematic wave equation and infiltration is based on the Green and Ampt equation. Governing equations for sediment continuity, detachment, deposition, shear stress in rills, and transport capacity are presented. Tested watershed has an area of 0.6ha, where the runoff and sediment data were collected. The relative error between predicted and measured runoff was $-16.6{\sim}2.2%$, peak runoff was $-15.6{\sim}2.2%$ and soil loss was $-23.9{\sim}356.5%$.

It is important to estimate the true misclassification rate of a given classifier when an independent set of test data is not available. Cross-validation and bootstrap are two possible approaches in this case. In related literature bootstrap estimators of the true misclassification rate were asserted to have better performance for small samples than cross-validation estimators. We compare the two estimators empirically when the classification rule is so adaptive to training data that its apparent misclassification rate is close to zero. We confirm that bootstrap estimators have better performance for small samples because of small variance, and we have found a new fact that their bias tends to be significant even for moderate to large samples, in which case cross-validation estimators have better performance with less computation.
Quantifying crop production is one of the most important applications of remote sensing in which the temporal and up-to-date data can play very important role in avoiding any immediate insufficiency in agricultural production. A combination of climatic data and biophysical parameters derived from Landsat7 ETM+ was used to develop a mathematical model for wheat yield forecast in different geographically wide Wheat growing districts in Egypt. Leaf Area Index (LAI) and fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (fAPAR) with temperature were used in the modeling. The model includes three sub-models representing the correlation between the reported yield and each individual variable. Simulation results using district statistics showed high accuracy of the derived correlations to estimate wheat production with a percentage standard error (%S.E.) of 1.5% in El- Qualyobia district and average (%S.E.) of 7% for the whole wheat areas.

In this paper the robust vector control method of induction motor for the purpose of improving the system performance deterioration caused by parameter variations is proposed. The estimations of the stator current and the rotor flux are obtained by the full order state observer with corrective prediction error feedback. and the adaptive scheme is constructed to estimate the rotor speed with the error signal between real and estimation value of the stator current. Adaptive sliding observer based on the variable structure control is applied to parameter identification. Consequently predictive current control and speed sensorless vector control can be obtained simultaneously regardless of the parameter variations.
Kriging is a nonparametric regression method used in geostatistics for estimating curves and surfaces for spatial data. It may come as a surprise that the Kriging estimator, normally derived as the best linear unbiased estimator, is also the solution of a particular variational problem. Thus, Kriging estimators can also be interpreted as generalized smoothing splines where the roughness penalty is determined by the covariance function of a spatial process. We build off the early work by Silverman (1982, 1984) and the analysis by Cox (1983, 1984), Messer (1991), Messer and Goldstein (1993) and others and develop an equivalent kernel interpretation of geostatistical estimators. Given this connection we show how a given covariance function influences the bias and variance of the Kriging estimate as well as the mean squared prediction error. Some specific asymptotic results are given in one dimension for Matern covariances that have as their limit cubic smoothing splines.
Spectral features of the seismic wave propagation from Odaesan Earthquake were evaluated based on the commonly treated random error between the observed data and the prediction values by the stochastic point-source ground-motion spectral model regarding the source, path and site effects. Radiation pattern of the error according to azimuth angle was found to be similar to the theoretical estimate. It was also observed that the spatial distribution of the errors was correlated with the geological map and the Q0 map which are indicatives of seismic boundaries.

An adjoint-based error estimation and mesh adaptation study is conducted for two-dimensional viscous flows on unstructured hybrid meshes. The error in an integral output functional of interest is estimated by a dot product of the residual vector and adjoint variable vector. Regions for the mesh to be adapted are selected based on the amount of local error at each nodal point. Triangular cells in the adaptive regions are refined by regular refinement, and quadrangular cells near viscous walls are bisected accordingly. The present procedure is applied to single-element airfoils such as the RAE2822 at a transonic regime and a diamond-shaped airfoil at a supersonic regime. Then the 30P30N multi-element airfoil at a low subsonic regime with a high incidence angle (${\alpha}=21deg.$) is analyzed. The same level of prediction accuracy for lift and drag is achieved with much less mesh points than the uniform mesh refinement approach. The detailed procedure of the adjoint-based mesh refinement for the multi-element airfoil case show that the basic flow features around the airfoil should be resolved so that the adjoint method can accurately estimate an output error.
Although cherry tomato is one of major vegetables consumed in fresh vegetable market, the quality grading method is mostly dependant on size measurement using drum shape sorting machines. Using Visible/Near-infrared spectroscopy, apparatus to be able to acquire transmittance spectrum data was made and used to estimate firmness, sugar content, and acidity of cherry tomatoes grown at hydroponic and soil culture. Partial least square (PLS) models were performed to predict firmness, sugar content, and acidity for the acquired transmittance spectra. To enhance accuracy of the PLS models, several preprocessing methods were carried out, such as normalization, multiplicative scatter correction (MSC), standard normal variate (SNV), and derivatives, etc. The coefficient of determination ($R^2_p$) and standard error of prediction (SEP) for the prediction of firmness, sugar, and acidity of cherry tomatoes from green to red ripening stages were 0.859 and 1.899 kgf, with a preprocessing of normalization, 0.790 and $0.434^{\circ}Brix$ with a preprocessing of the 1st derivative of Savitzky Golay, and 0.518 and 0.229% with a preprocessing normalization, respectively.
